Day 124. War Update. 7 February, 2024

We’ve had 14 days straight of rain and finally the sun is shining. But more on that later.

The IDF is doing a stellar job of flooding some of the Northern Gaza tunnels and filling in more. Terrorists dressed as civilians have been venturing back into Northern Gaza ‘to check on their properties,’ but it has turned out to be a most deadly ruse on two separate occasions.

Mostly Northern Gaza is cleared. The same with Southern Gaza. The IDF have surrounfed the Hamas stronghold of Khan Younis. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated, “We are completing our mission in Khan Younis , we will also reach Rafah and we will kill every terrorist there.”

The Israeli military, so far, has been skirting around fighting around large civilian populations, trying to minimize the number of casualties. They have limited their air strikes and drone surveillance at the behest of the Biden administration. This means the soldiers are going home to home looking for terrorists, arms, tunnel shaft openings and information. They haven’t been disappointed.

In almost EVERY home, many have to be cleared before entering because they are mined with explosives, the IDF soldiers have found massive amounts of weapons. These include guns and ammo: from pistols (homemade Don Karlo’s), rifles, automatic weapons, grenades, to RPGs. Sometimes they are hidden in kitchen pantries and children’s bedrooms.

Very surprisingly, in almost EVERY home they have uncovered tunnel shaft openings leading to the wider underground “Gaza Metro System.” The underground tunnels are much more extensive then Israel ever imagined, being longer totaled that the London or NYC metro. Each home has an opening leading to multiple layers underground of passageways. (Confirming, unfortunately, the idea that most Gaza residents are at least complicit, if not full blown militants).

The Times of Israel reported in mid January that the Gaza tunnels stretch for at least 350 miles- with up to 6000 separate shafts found thus far. It’s like a giant complex ant farm. And Gaza is only 140 square miles in area.

All of this is being extensively recorded and documented by the IDF for posterity, as it will be defense in probable international court cases. Several tunnels are wide enough for large trucks to pass through. Others are equipped with bathrooms, kitchens, meeting rooms, storage facilities, dungeon-like jail cells, surgical/medical facilities.

Speaking of which:

We’re you aware that there were 83 hospitals in Gaza????? 83!!!! UN sponsored hospitals. Italian Hospital. Scottish Hospital. French Hospital. Irish Hospital. On and on and on it goes. 83 hospitals. In all of the Northern Israel from Haifa up, there are only 16 (some are very small private hospitals). In all of the hospitals, weapons, uniforms and tunnels have been found. With all of their vast medical network, Gazans traveled regularly every day into Israel for treatment- cancers, pediatric, cardiology, even reconstructive plastic surgery for women who have had acid thrown at them.

Speaking of surgeries and recovery, Israel has been blessed with some miraculously quick recoveries. Not always complete, but miraculous nonetheless.

NES gadol!!! Huge miracle!!

Part miracle, part perspicacity. Mayan goes to physical therapy daily. The 21 year old lost both legs in a tunnel explosion, but it is not stopping him. He is totally determined to overcome all odds and get on with life. He will receive prosthetic legs within the month.

On the morning of 7 October, the Golan family was awakened by red alert missile firings. That was nothing new for them as they were residents of Kfar Aza. But it didn’t stop. Soon they heard the noise of gunfire. And Arabic cursing outside their window. Speaking with family members on the phone, they were told to lock themselves inside their safe room.

Evyatar Hogeg, the brother of Elliah stayed in touch with his sister, her husband, Ariel and their 18 month baby, Yael for over six hours. Then Elliah said, “Pray for us. They are inside.” That was the last he heard until he received a call from Sheba Medical Center telling him to go to the ER immediately. The family was there, but in bad shape. Hamas had attempted to burn them alive.

Elliah had 3rd degree burns over 60% of her body. She also suffered extreme laryngeal and respiratory distress . Ariel, her husband had 2nd and 3rd degree burns over his extremities and lower torso. The baby, Yael also had burns over her head, limbs and body and was rushed to the pediatric burn unit. Elliah and Ariel were in the ICU of the burn center, sedated and intubated… placed into temporary comas.

The baby was the first to wake up after 2 1/2 weeks. She was cared for by her grandmothers who took turns at her side. Bandaged over most her body, she is now fairly active and beginning to speak.

Ariel woke up next by hearing his daughter’s voice. When she was able to have visitors, the Sheba staff wheeled Ariel in his hospital bed to see his baby. Soon he, too, was up and walking on crutches with daily rehab. His desire was to see his wife.

Elliah still remains heavily sedated, but is off the ECHO breathing system. Her husband pleads with her,”We are waiting for you. We want you to be strong. We will hear your voice again soon. Enough. Come on. Come back.” He strikes her head. She recognizes him, but still has a long way to go and needs all our prayers.

Elliah & Ariel Golan August, 2023

Ariel now stays with Yael, eats meals with her, and his bed has been moved so they share a room in the hospital. He says, “We didn’t survive all this for only two of us to go back. It must be all three of us. It can’t be otherwise.”

Evyatar, Elliah’s brother commented that “The people doing these atrocities are not people who want freedom. They just want blood. Jewish blood. Whatever happens, we’re waking up in a different country. We’re not going to be the same Israel. Maybe, just maybe, it will be a good thing. A loving Israel, a united Israel.”

Please pray for this family. It will be a long haul for all.

Baltimore’s Elman Retina Group’s Dr. Sid Schechet Heroically Restores Sight to Wounded Israeli Soldier
Beer Sheva, Israel – Feb. 1, 2024 – (BJL) Sid Schechet, M.D. of the Elman Retina Group, took two weeks off from his busy practice to volunteer as a retina surgeon at the Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheva. Soroka is the major trauma center for wounded soldiers. Since arriving on Monday, Dr. Schechet has been operating non-stop for more than twelve hours daily, helping to restore vision to severely wounded soldiers and anyone else in need. He has shared innovative surgical techniques he developed with the excellent staff in Israel. Dr. Schechet also arranged for a special laser valued at $200,0000 to be shipped to Israel, which allows for the repair of retinal tears in the ICU in soldiers that cannot be moved to the Eye Clinic. Periodically, he shares his experiences with the Elman Retina Group staff members. Here is one such story.

“I hope all is well on the home front. Today was another doozy but filled with miracles in so many ways. Here’s a nice quick story:

This young hero is a soldier who sustained a bilateral open globe with metallic foreign bodies. He was blasted by Hamas while sleeping with his team, and unfortunately, they all died. He was the lone survivor, with injuries from top to bottom. I honestly didn’t know what would happen to him after I repaired his severely damaged eyes earlier in the week. I was scared for when he’d first awaken to hear what happened to his team and to then to open his eyes only to realize he had no vision.

He woke up last night and realized what happened to his team and that he couldn’t see. Despite this, he immediately requested to return to his battalion to continue fighting against the terrorists. Today, when I examined him again, he miraculously could see parts of the letters I brought from my kids made for wounded soldiers. We both cried. It’s been stuff like that every second, exhausting but very uplifting.”

Given the extent and severity of his injuries, Dr. Schechet was concerned that the soldier, despite the surgical repair, would never be able to see anything again, but the Ribono Shel Olam ( the creator off the world) thought otherwise.

Our G-d truly is good and merciful. There are thousands of victims. People are suffering not only physically but emotionally and mentally. But Israelis are a resilient, determined bunch. There is so much support here in hospitals, with social services, rehab specialists, psychologists and of course, the miraculous from Above that we all depend upon.

As an update to this story : I just found out the main leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniya, living a life of opulence and luxury in Qatari exile, has a sister who lived in Gaza. She is now in an Israeli hospital being treated for an aggressive form of cancer. I’m sure she will get the best of treatment and then be released back to Gaza…. To commit acts of terror as did Hamas leader Yayha Sinwar?????

Today John and I took a long walk, the longest is ages, We went to a nearby mountaintop village. Absolutely spectacular!!!!! The scenery. The sun. The flowers. The homes. Birds chirping. It was such a peaceful break.

Tomorrow I will feature this community. I hope to be starting something new- because there is so much antisemitism, most Israelis are still more than convinced Israel remains the safest place. I will be featuring a different community: a moshav or kibbutz, a village or city, each with a unique flavor. If anyone is interested in making Aliyah, I’ll be more than glad to help. In the meantime, my weekly “Get to know the places better…” Come travel the Land with me vicariously.

“The sun will rise soon.
We will know better days than these.

That everyone will return home soon.
We will go to meet them downstairs
Please, Lord let it be good news-
Because the eternal people are never afraid.
Even when it’s hard to see-

We will go out to sing in the streets
The Holy One, blessed be He, protects us,
So who can overcome us?
There is no other land.
AM YISRAEL
AM YISRAEL CHAI 🇮🇱

The people of Israel need a song full of hope these days. It’s been an especially difficult winter for us – we are four months into a war we knew was inevitable yet never wanted to admit would happen. Our troops, active duty young men and women 18-21, and our reservists up to the age of 65 are all serving in some form. If they are not actively fighting, they are called up as medics, drivers, logistics, mechanics, cooks, communications, foreign relations, and computer/tech specialists. We still have 136 hostages being held in tunnels by Hamas, and we have no way of knowing their condition although the army is desperately trying to find them. The chill of winter has settled in our bones and we have been hunkered down during two weeks of incessant downpour.

The situation on the northern border is a wee bit of a nail-biter as we are continually informed that soon it will be our turn. All of the towns and kibbutzim along the border with Lebanon were evacuated over three months ago- families displaced, work interrupted. It’s been a battleground up there with near 100,000 troops in the forested areas, tanks lined up and spread out in fields and mountains.

So far it’s been a regular tit-for-tat between Iranian-backed Hizbulla, the Radwan elite forces and the IDF. Every day there is an exchange of antitank missiles and RPGs from Lebanon, along with aerial infiltration by drone and lots of machine gun fire. Russian made Kornet missiles have made direct strikes on over 400 homes. Most missiles fall in fields. Israel responds in kind with machine gun fire, targeted air strikes, and tank fire. In favorable conditions we can hear the booms, but lately with flashes of lightning and tremendous clashing of thunder, a person can get a bit jumpy.

Hizbulla has yet to use any of its targeted or long range missiles. And the IDF tanks and troops haven’t pushed forward into Lebanon. Yet, things have intensified in the last couple weeks and no one seems to want to make a bet on when the gloves come off.

There has been attempted diplomacy between Hizbulla and the US and other countries and Israel. To get in some history, so you will better understand the situation: in 2006, two Israeli soldiers were taken by the Radwan soldiers. Israel pressed into Lebanon, killing many terrorists, but failed to dismantle Hizbulla. This only made them stronger.

A ceasefire ensued with Lebanon getting a censure and UN resolution 1701 placing Hizbulla forces back to a position north of the Litani River, off of Israel’s border.

The green area was supposed to be monitored by UN Observation Force in Lebanon. They did nothing.

The 6 mile swath of land in green was designated a military no-man’s land. It was open to resident civilians (mostly Maronite and Melkite Christians and Druze), agriculture and businesses/towns. Instead it was completely taken over by Hizbulla terrorists who dug tunnels under the border into Israel. Who built towering observaction posts right along the border fence. Who coerced the local residents into hiding bombs and missiles within their own homes. Who installed launch pads in school parking lots and behind hospitals and shopping areas. And who built up their defenses with the help of Iran, Russia, Syria and China.

Many of their fighters are already battle-trained because they served for almost a decade in the Syrian Civil War. They are professional soldiers trained by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard.

Israel has been making regular targeted air strikes in Syria taking out weapons depots and bombing runways and train tracks as Iranian missiles are being supplied to Hizbulla. Israel has struck known terror cell outposts and headquarters as well as control towers and satellites as far north as Beirut. Lebanon seems to have little to no control over Hizbulla activity which in essence has taken over the entire country.Israel set a date of the end of January for Hizbulla to move north. No such. No one has enforced the edict. No one has policed southern Lebanon.

Last week, after 2 1/2 years and over 160 direct missile attacks by Iranian backed Hizbulla forces on US military bases in Syria, Jordan and Iraq, 3 US soldiers were killed and scores wounded. it is forcing the hand of the Biden administration to “do something.” They announced Thursday attack would be imminent. Of course, this gave major players, commanders and planners to escape into Iraq and Iran. Israel targeted a convoy of 3 generals in Northern Syria, but most were long gone by the time America retaliated in force yesterday.

There are increasing rumors that it’s just a matter of time. A neighbor last week came home from reserves. He told his wife to stock up on food, water and essentials for the family for an entire month. That once it started in earnest, it would get really intense very quickly and that they’d need to hunker down and rely on themselves. That was a fun day. She has 4 small children under 11. It certainly didn’t help her nerves, but we can help her supply needs. And try to help by bringing her meals.

So in the interim we keep ourselves busy. Last week I made shepherd’s pies and big mixed salads with croutons and Italian dressing and big Texas chocolate chip cookies. Also a huge stockpot of Georgia Brunswick Stew (a southern US chicken stew) with cornbread and sweet potato pie. Fruit salads and zucchini muffins for lunchboxes…. so mothers with families and soldier husbands could catch a break. Ummmmm…. Certainly not the Israeli palate and trying to explain to people what this was – absolutely hysterical! Next time I should stick to schnitzel and falafel with couscous.

Walk around the neighborhood with me. Families with husbands, sons, fathers, daughters in the military hang their loved one’s division flag outside their house. It’s a source of pride for them.

More foreign dignitaries and negotiators are to arrive in Israel this week. Sec of State Antony Blinken returns for the 7th time next week (as an aside- if climate change is the biggest enemy and requires immediate solutions to save the planet, it seems that many of these statesmen could pick up a phone or send an encrypted email… but I digress). Every time this man comes, there are new problems and new polemics to deal with. And they never seem to work in the Israeli’s favor.

The best thing that I can do, besides write or cook, is to pray. And frankly, there are times I just don’t know EXACTLY what to pray. I pray legions of angels about our borders. For wisdom for our government officials. For protection for the troops. Provision for the families. A finding and releasing of those held captive. And comfort to all who mourn. (And that America stay out of this).

*** an update to my last post: Israel has awarded full citizenship to the Filipino family of Cedrick Garin. He gave his life for the country. Now the country gives new life – complete citizenship with passports and all the benefits – to his parents and his young wife.

War Stories Days 114-116 The “Lost” Editions

For the past two days the posts that I’ve written have gotten erased. Deleted. Vanished like a magician’s rabbit. Gone. Was I distracted and hit a wrong button? Was it something else??? So now, I’ll try to recreate as best I can what I believe to be two of the best posts I’ve ever written. And if you find interesting or informative any of what I wrote please share. If you know of any outlet that will publish my writing, please contact me/them. Thank you for your readership.

Last week was an incredibly hard week for the people of Israel as we faced one tragedy after another. The South Africans pressed charges of genocide against Israel and we are now defending ourselves and have been ordered to present evidence that we are NOT committing genocide in the International Court of Justice.

Last Tuesday the nation was devastated (that’s mildly putting it) to learn that 24 of our IDF soldiers were killed in action in less than 24 hours. Monday an antitank missile was fired towards a tank outside Khan Younis. Simultaneously an RPG hit two adjacent 2-story buildings that imploded and collapsed. Nearby a booby trapped building heavy with explosives detonated killing and wounding a small platoon of 9 soldiers inside.

Captain, Reserves, Nir Binyamin, 29

Nir Binyamin, 29, was born and raised in Tiberias. He had recently finished his engineering degree from Bar Ilan University, was working in Tel Aviv, and living in the Tel Aviv suburbs. He was called up and entered the reserves shortly after 7 October. While on leave two weeks ago, he spoke with his parents about his decision to propose to his longtime girlfriend on his next leave. He was killed in the building collapse. Last week, his mother, Michal, gave her son’s eulogy. Our hearts were ripped in two when we heard this strong woman on the television:

“After I had visited Yad Vashem (Holocaust Museum) and gone to see the burned out houses at Kibbutz Aza, I understood. I finally understood. That only if we will be together, united and be there for one another with strong faith in G-d, our strength will push back every enemy. We are a strong nation. My son fell for the sake of this country. On his behalf, I want to ask you (over 1000 mourners gathered at the funeral) a small favor. Will you now shout loudly with me? “ Am Yisrael Chai!” ( The people of Israel live!)

Not all of those IDF soldiers killed were Jewish… some were not even Israeli. Sgt. 1st class, res., age 26 was an Arab Israeli Bedouin Muslim. He was a husband a father to a one year old daughter. He was killed in the booby trapped building.

Before a soldier here enters into war or serves in a dangerous area, they sit down and writes a letter to be delivered to their next of kin in the event of their death. I am always amazed at the eloquence of these letters. Abu Latif wrote:

“ I am proud to be a Bedouin Israeli. From my perspective, the people I knew all lived together and respect each other in our land. I am proud to be a Bedouin serving in the IDF as a warrior. I have had the privilege to defend and protect in a meaningful service that I will never forget. For the past decades Gaza has become a completely different place than it was. Today there is a murderous terror organization there that does not distinguish between Jews and Arabs. People from my community have contributed a lot to this country, to the soldiers, to the kibbutzim. Bedouins, too, have been killed and kidnapped. We all share the same fate and we must stand together united. Unfortunately, there are people who don’t believe in cooperation between sectors, trying to intimidate, provoke and ruin relationships, to destroy trust. Do not believe them. Do not let it happen.”

Not all the soldiers who serve in the IDF and give their lives are native born Israelis. Cedrick Garin came to Israel with his parents as a toddler. They were from the Philippines. His mother, Imelda, was a devout Catholic. She worked as a house cleaner and took on jobs caring for others in order to make and send money back home to support her family there. Rico, Cedrick’s father, was deported back to the Philippines when his visa was found over expired.

Cedrick lost his way and fell into a wrong crowd in high school. He stopped going to church. Eventually he dropped out and opted for life in the streets. He was arrested several times for petty crimes, but he tried to hide this from his mother. Imelda continued to pray for him. One night the police came to their apartment. Cedrick Garin’s life changed again when, being led out the door in handcuffs, he realized how badly he had caused his mother so much pain.

Cedrick finished his high school, went back to Mass regularly with his mother and enlisted in the IDF. It is nearly impossible to get into a combat unit with a criminal record, but Garin was persistent and proved his worth.

While in regular service he was stationed in Hebron, a holy site to Jews and Christians as it is where the Cave of the Patriarchs, Machpelah, is. The burial place of Abraham & Sarah; Isaac & Rebecca; Jacob & Leah. It is a small Orthodox Jewish neighborhood surrounded by Muslims, many radicalized. Jews consider Hebron to be part of Judaea, the Biblical heartland. Others, the West Bank and occupied Territory. Pvt. Garin was on duty one day and saw a man in a kefiyya with a knife in one hand and axe in the other. He saw the man stalking an obviously Orthodox Jew headed to the cave to worship and before the terrorist could stab him, Garin shot him in the leg and neutralized the perpetrator.

Cedrick Garin recently married his sweetheart, Daniella, a caregiver from the Philippines. They planned on starting a family in the near future. Cedrick Garin was one of the soldiers killed in the building blast.

If you have ever watched the award winning TV drama series, Fauda, on Netflix, then you are familiar with Idan Amedi who plays the character Sagi.

Amedi is in the blue shirt

Idan Amedi, 35, is also a singer and songwriter who was discovered on Israel’s version of Star Search. He is one of the top Israeli superstars and is also a captain in an elite reserve unit of the military.

Seven weeks ago, Amedi’s unit was ambushed in Northern Gaza and hit by an RPG. He was treated on the scene by military paramedics and evacuated to Sheba Medical Center. He arrived sedated, intubated and burned, covered in soot so that he was unrecognizable. Amedi spent several weeks in ICU. He was released last Friday to shikum, intensive rehabilitation and physiotherapy. He gave a statement to the press upon his release.

“I want to share a hug with the grieving families. As someone who knows loss up close, I know there are no words to mend a shattered heart. Though I was seriously injured, my spirit is strong. I refuse to make this injury the story of my life. It’s just another milestone. I will come back to sing and act and with G-d’s help will also return to fight for my country. The Israeli people are the strongest people in the world. When we are united we are invincible. It will take time, but we will win this war. We have no other choice. As you have supported me, I only ask that you support my brothers in arms.”

Among the soldiers killed on the deadliest day since the war began was 35 year old Elkana Vizem. He lived in Gaza when it was part of Israel, when Israelis and Arabs lived side by side in peace. In the days before the Israelis were forcibly removed by their own government in a land for peace deal, the Oslo Accords. Elkana was the father of four small children.

He wrote in this letter he left his family:

If you are reading this, something must have happened to me.

First, in the event that I have been taken captive, I demand that no deal for the release of a single terrorist be made for my release. Our resounding victory is more important than anything else, so please simply continue putting all of your effort into ensuring that our victory is as resounding as possible.

Perhaps I have been killed in battle. When a soldier is killed in battle, it’s sad. But I ask you to be happy. Don’t be sad when you bid farewell to me. Sing a lot, enter people’s hearts, hold one another’s hands and strengthen one another. We have so much to be proud of and be happy about. We are a generation of redemption! We are writing the most significant moments in the history of our nation and of the entire world. So I ask you to please be optimistic. Keep always choosing life – a life of love, hope, purity, and optimism.

Look those who are dear to you in the whites of their eyes and remind them that everything they experience in this life is worth it and they have a great deal to live for. Live! Don’t stop the power of life for even a single moment!

I was already wounded in Operation Protective Edge. I had the option of staying behind, but not for a moment do I regret my decision to go back into combat. On the contrary: it’s the best decision I ever made.”

For the past week delegates from Egypt, Qatar, Turkey, the CIA and Mossad have been meeting in Paris to discuss a hostage release/ceasefire deal. Hamas has demanded a release of 150 ( later updated to 250) prisoners (terrorists) released from Israeli prisons per hostage or body released. They have also called for a complete ceasefire on Israel’s part. And a continuation of UNRWA humanitarian aid (hijacked by Hamas terrorists that does not get to the civilians).

They have no food. No water. No shelter. No fuel. No power. Despite the 250 semi truckloads of aid entering into Gaza from 3 checkpoints. But they do have this:

Yesterday evening, just after nightfall, as the citizens in the Tel Aviv area were coming home from work the sirens sounded again and again and again and again. 48 rockets were launched from Khan Younis.

I cannot begin to imagine the horrors of the people still held in captivity by Hamas/Isis and the PIJ. I do not want to even think the tremendous torture the families of these hostages. It’s all we think about. Every time we step out of our house (seriously) there is a poster or photographs of those still held. We know someone who’s best friend is a 79 year old man there. I think of the Bibas children, Kfir, who spent his first birthday in a tunnel. And his brother, Ariel, age 4. Two gorgeous redheads. And their mom.

Every week Hamas runs a pay-op on us. Three weeks ago they sent out a little game show. Photos of three hostages. We had to guess which ones were alive and which were dead: a young woman (the one on videoed screaming from the motorcycle), and two men.

Two weeks ago they released a video (that went viral) of four kidnapped young women, hands tied behind their backs, ages 18-31: a track star, a talented violinist were two of the girls. They had obviously been beaten and looked very thin.

This week, the Hamas ba$+arD$ released another photo.

I understand the families that want to bring these loved ones home at any and all costs. But there are serious games being played now. One is to blame everything on Netanyahu, to oust him from office and cause him to resign. He is far from perfect and has done several things I cannot honor, but now is not the time.

There are those who want to see Israel fall. It is no secret. Israel has many enemies in this world. To divide Israel and send her into chaos would be perfect. To arrange a deal where Israel would have to ceasefire and Hamas could regroup, rearm, recharge, replan, fortified with all the terrorists we’ve captured would send many Israelis over the top.

To arrange a deal where land would be promised for peace again, where the Palestinians would live peaceably, side by side with Israel is a pipe dream. They will not recognize Israel’s right to exist as a sovereign nation. It would split the country in two.

We are receiving news that the war cabinet is meeting. That foreign dignitaries are calling and visiting. There is intense pressure for an agreement to be cobbled together. Already this morning, several right wing Knesset members have stated that they will dissolve the current government if a deal like the above is reached.

Just 15 minutes ago, I read, opposition leader Yair Lapid (who was interim Prime Minister for 4 months last year) stated he would step in as head of an emergency government should the current one collapse.

The people want unity. The people of Israel want to see a just conclusion to this war where the evil Hamas regime is completely disassembled and can no longer wage war against Israel. The soldiers are willing to fight and die for their country. Despite pulling troops, despite scaling back Air Force attacks, despite sending in foreign aid which is known to contain contraband, they are making tremendous headway in Southern Gaza.

Lastly, I leave you with the story of Eitan Mor, 25, who was working as a security guard at the Supernova Festival. After helping hundreds of concert goers escape the terrorist invasion, he himself, was woman’s captured. Today he spends his 116th day in captivity somewhere in. Gaza hellhole.

Wotan’s parents, Tzvika & Ditza, are absolutely adamant that there not be a hostage release in exchange for letting convicted terrorists free. It has happened before and is a recipe for disaster. As Tzvika reminded the journalists interviewing him, the mastermind, milithead of Hamas, Yayha Sinwar was held in an Israeli prison where he learned Hebrew and got two degrees. He was successfully treated for a brain tumor in the best Israeli hospitals. Sinwar was released in the hostage exchange for Gilad Shalit in 2015… when over 1000 prisoners were let go for one hostage. If this kind of deal happens, our soldiers would have all fought and died in vain.

Ditza appeared on national news stating:

I’m a mother of 8 children, including my eldest son, Eitan. But if now Eitan was released in exchange for terrorists with blood on their hands or terrorists in general, I have a responsibility to my little 5 year old daughter and her siblings. Because the same terrorist or terrorists who are released in this deal can come and kidnap and murder my daughters and sons in a few years time. I want that Eitan could be here so I could bake his favorite cake and hug him and hold him tight. But I’m also responsible to the rest of my children and, of course, to almost 10 million Israeli citizens as well. I love my son more than my heart can bear, but I also love my people.”

There’s a crack in Everything. That’s how the light gets in. -Leonard Cohen. War Stories Day 112. 26 January, 2024

Yesterday was Tu b’Shvat in Israel. It’s the oldest Earth Day on record, a new year….for trees. It’s been on the Hebrew calendar for centuries. We celebrate by eating produce native to the land of Israel, namely dates, figs, pomegranates, grapes, barley, wheat and olives. And we plant trees. Fruit trees and sturdy oak, cedars and pine, eucalyptus and carob and nut trees.

This year trees were planted at the graves of fallen soldiers. An entire citrus orchard was planted outside Sderot (Gaza Envelope) for victims of 7 October. There were over 1000 orange and grapefruit trees placed in the ground in memorial.

Outside Kibbutz Nahal Oz a shade grove was planted. One for each of the 249 people taken captive into Gaza. It was very moving. There were red ribbons wrapped around each tree representing a returned hostage. Black ribbon for those who did not make it. And yellow for those still presumed alive in Hamas or PIJ captivity.

Another moving shade forest was planted at the site of the Re’em field where the peace concert took place. Friends and family put a tree in the ground at the site their loved one was found slain. Each tree had a picture of the deceased and an article of clothing hung from a stake in front of the tree. These will be permanent memorials. They celebrate death. We plant trees and celebrate new life.

Coincidentally, since 7 October, Israel has been blessed with a baby boom seen at no other time in its history. Maternity wards are filled to overflowing. In the early days of the war, and even now with many husbands gone, greater numbers of women are choosing to have a home birth with a midwife. There are many that are afraid to leave the house alone at night to travel to a hospital, so home births have boomed.

This week Elya and Novo were released from their unit after over 50 days of heavy combat in Khan Younis, Gaza. Both of their wives went into labor on the same day. The women share a recovery room and the new fathers have a week leave to be with the families. Brothers in arms; brothers in childbirth. Mazal tov!!

Meet Battalion 8103. They went into Northern Gaza from the beginning. Since 18 October, 29 babies have been born to this special group of elite soldiers.

Another heartwarming story:

And lastly, a friend sent around this pregnancy announcement from her daughter. Her son-in-law is a reservist serving in Samaria. This will be her third grandchild- B”H is an abbreviation for Barukh haShem or Praise the Lord

Israel is entering into its 4th month of the war. So far, over 32,000 soldiers have been injured. Over 400 critically. Since military tactics have been changed to appease the US requests for scaling back and slowing down, more soldiers have been wounded. The use of surveillance drones to make pinpoint surgical strikes is gone. Both sides are now incurring more casualties.

Yet despite the high numbers of wounded, this war is seeing the lowest death rate percentage wise (IDF) than any other war in history. Major medical advancements have been made. Each unit is trained in triage and battle care so as to stanch bleeding as medics are called in. Tank units become mobile ICUs, containing full ambulance equipment and paramedics including surgeons, anesthetists. Type O blood is held in reserve, so that for the first time in history blood transfusions can be started in a tank or helicopter. Surgeons are lined up in operating theaters awaiting the injured.

The mortality rate stands at 6.7%. This is a decrease of more than double. According to the data, the average time from injury to the operating room stands at 1 hour and 6 minutes. This is for Gaza and for the West Bank. If war were to break out with Hizbulla, these statistics would be quite higher due to the larger area, more difficult terrain and proximity to hospitals. Thus, field hospitals will be set up at strategic locations along the northern front in event of escalating hostilities.

The soldiers of the IDF realize that this is an existential fight- if they don’t protect the land on 4 fronts (Hamas/Gaza; PA radicals/West Bank; Houthi rebels/Eilat; Hizbulla/North). Israel would be wiped out. The country is united in their mission. Our soldiers, especially those that have given up everything in sacrifice for their loved ones, are being hailed for their valiant efforts.

I believe this attitude helps make all the difference in the recovery of the patient. They know their sacrifices were not in vain. We salute them and thank them and owe our lives to their bravery. Medical advances are being made in the areas of physical and occupational therapy. Prosthetic limbs are helping amputees get back to living more quickly. And a robotic type exoskeleton has been developed to help paraplegics stand and walk again.

Amitai Argamon was in one of the first units to enter a booby trapped building in Beit Hanoi. Four of his friends were killed. Five others were seriously wounded. At the initial blast, a wall fell on Amitai, crushing both legs beyond repair. He was on the verge of death, with almost no pulse, but a strong will to survive and a stronger faith in the Lord.

He knew to stay alert and talk with his rescuers, answering questions and asking questions of the paramedics continually engaging. The doctors at Ichilov made the split decision to do a double amputation which also saved his life. Amitai, surrounded by family and friends, medical staff and personalities from the Israeli music and film industry and religious groups, was in ICU for a month. He has remained an inspiration and encouragement to everyone.

“I knew that I was fighting for my family and for my home. I know my life has been preserved by the Lord. There is a reason I’m still here. There is a special purpose I will now have for my life. We are a strong and resilient people. There is always hope. There is strength in G-d and strength in Unity. Together we will win,” stated Amitai with a smile.

Even in the darkness the Light shines for the upright…

War Update Day 111. 25 January, 2024. The ‘Just Leave Us Alone’ Edition

I understand we are old news for the most part. Not in the current news cycle. Nothing expedient in order to push forward a presidential campaign in an election year… not yet anyway. You see, in order for a campaign to progress there needs to be something wonderful, something exciting, something sexy to promote – like a cure for cancer or world peace. Or an end to the war in Israel.

For the past two weeks US dignitaries have been traveling to the MidEast: to Egypt to meet with the Qataris to broker a deal between Hamas and Israel to release the hostages. To call for a complete ceasefire.

Hamas refused Israel’s offer of a 2 month pause in fighting in exchange for a staged release of hostages. In the first stage civilian women and children and those in critical condition and the elderly would be released. In the second stage female soldiers, bodies, and male civilians (non-military) would be released. Stage three would see the return of everyone else (139 people total). Israel also agreed to the gradual repopulation of non-militant civilians to Northern Gaza. Hamas at first wanted a complete ceasefire and all prisoners held in Israeli jails plus all POWs captured to be set free in Gaza. Then they reneged.

US National Security Council leader John Kirby was in Egypt and in Doha last week to broker a deal. This week it’s his assistant, Brett McGurk. No go. Hamas won’t budge.

Last Friday French Minister of Defense, Sébastien Lecorne tried in vain for Hamas to allow the promised medicines sent by Israel through Egypt to reach the hostages. Some of the elderly needed heart, blood pressure and diabetes medication. One lady needed chemotherapy. Another few needed asthma and breathing treatments. No evidence has been seen of the drugs getting to the intended captives. It seems they fell into Hamas hands.

In recent days, there has been evidence that the Biden administration and Israel’s leftists are trying to undermine Netanyahu to overthrow the current Israeli administration again. In late December, during a 40 minute phone call between Netanyahu and Biden, the latter tried to get Bibi to wrap up the Gaza situation. Biden gave Netanyahu two months to end the fighting and start the rebuilding. Netanyahu said there would be no set timeline. President Biden also expressed his wish to see a “revitalized Palestinian Authority “to be the new governing body in a rebuilt Gaza. Netanyahu refused and Biden hung up on him. They wouldn’t speak again for another month.

In late October, the IDF began its push into Northern Gaza. First leaflets were dropped, text messages and phone calls made to the innocent civilians to clear the area. Three passages into Southern Gaza were given.

For the first time there was a coordinated effort by the Air Force the Navy and the Ground Forces to pinpoint and destroy missile launch pads and terrorist strongholds. Gaza city was surrounded in three weeks. Tunnels were located and sealed off. One female soldier held captive was found. Three hostage soldiers’ bodies were recovered. Precision pinpoint surgical strikes took out key Hamas leaders.

Some neighborhoods, mainly a largely Christian neighborhood, were spared destruction. In other areas, weapons, maps, Hamas handbooks and military gear were found in many homes, hospitals, mosques. and schools. A missile manufacturing facility was uncovered in a building for Scouts. That was located adjacent to a small amusement park, where there was also a launch site for rockets. In almost every building were secret escape routes leading underground to tunnels. These were all destroyed.

It took all of six weeks to accomplish the above. The the Biden administration stepped in to slow things down. More and more humanitarian aid was allowed in at the request of the US, the EU and the UN. All three checkpoints were opened. There was no way to thoroughly examine the 250 trucks entering Gaza each day. In some cases, weapons and ammunition were found in tent apparatus and in UNWRA flour bags. Hamas pirated many of the shipments once they entered Gaza- with no one to stop them.

Journalists of the world were quick to film devastation in the North and starving children in the South. It was all blamed on Israel. Yet the UN and women’s rights groups refused to acknowledge that Hamas and civilians of Gaza used rape and genital mutilation of women(and men) as a weapon of war. They refused to hear the stories or see the evidence that horrific sexual atrocities were committed by Hamas against Israelis.

In response to IS and EU requests, Gallant, the Israeli Defense Minister, agreed not to use targeted drones or coordinated attacks. He agreed to slow things down in the South. Due to foreign pressure, there was no major military incursion by the IDF into Lebanon to defeat Hizbulla. Israel would not go after the Houthis in Yemen. Still, the world only heard about Israeli vengeance and disproportionality. The world did not seem to understand Israel was not fighting innocent people, but evil. The world did not care when IDF casualties began to rise dramatically.

This last Tuesday, US Secretary of State Blinken sent Israel an ultimatum. Israel would support a two state solution with the Palestinian government in control of Gaza or risk demonization by the world. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Blinken publicly pinned Israel into a corner. Using misinformation he stated that the entire world is prepared for Palestinian statehood.

“The challenge is now, “he stated. “The question is now. Is Israeli society prepared to engage on these questions? Is it prepared to have that mindset?” Yes. We have. But it is the Palestinians who refuse to acknowledge any form of Israeli statehood. From the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea (Israel’s borders), Palestine will be free (of Jews).

After 7 October, 81% of Israelis, both Jews and Arabs polled by Tel Aviv University, were NOT in favor of a two state solution. Israel has already given up land for peace. It has not worked. President Biden only wants an Israel obedient to the dictats of the US. He sees Prime Minister Netanyahu and the current right wing coalition as the obstacle to a quick end to the war and to the creation of a two state solution. This would save his 2024 presidential bid.

Once again, Netanyahu and the Israeli government said absolutely no. The war will be seen to its conclusion. In the past two weeks, during the push into southern Gaza, #109 Division 98 has completely encircled Khan Younis. Over 5700 tunnel entrances, many in homes and schools, have been uncovered. The amount of missile fire from Gaza has been drastically reduced. There is at present only one or two rockets sent into Israel every 18-24 hours.

On Tuesday, Andrea Mitchell from NBC reported that Blinken and Netanyahu had reached an agreement. Israel would eventually concede to a US supported Palestinian state and relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia would be normalized. Because, as Mitchel stated, “We all know the Netanyahu administration will not be around forever.”

During his trip to Israel last week, before Davos, Blinken met with the Israeli war cabinet. He met with left wing Knesset members and judges on the Israeli Supreme Court. He met with retired leaders of the IDF and civil servants, including IAF General Nimrod Sheffer (Ret.). This was the man who last September told the press reservists including most IAF pilots would not report for duty in event of emergency. This is the man who leads some of the opposition against the Prime Minister.

And he met former prime Minister Yair Lapid. On behalf of the Biden administration and the world, Blinken attempted to convince the Israelis he met with that “ultimately there is no military solution to Hamas. It’s an ideology. Either recognize that or history will repeat itself and the violence will continue.” He was trying to encourage division and dissent against the direction of the current administration. It worked once-

At present Israel remains united. We see that if evil is not eradicated from Gaza to Yemen to the radical militant Islamists in the West Bank and in Iran, terrorism will continue. It will be exported to Europe and to the United States. Their goal is to establish an Islamic caliphate. The goal is Muslim dominance over the West. The goal is the complete eradication of Israel.

We are not pawns to be used for a presidential bid for re-election. We are not going to concede when we have 139 captives still being held by Hamas. This includes 9 Americans. We will not be told to move our boundaries so as to be completely. indefensible. Israel is a tiny sliver of land surrounded by a huge sea of Arab countries. We will not give up any more land. Please. Just leave us alone.

War Stories Day 108. 22 January, 2024

And…. A BIBLICAL FEAST!

We survived a bit of a scare attack over the weekend. Psy-ops? I don’t know? Grounded in some reality? Perhaps…

Last week there were several ‘direct hits’ in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria and Iran. Several key players, masterminds of the Islamic terror world were eliminated by direct drone and missile attacks. Even this morning there was a huge explosion at a missile launching site in Iran.

We do not know who is taking out these key members. Some say it’s Israel and Mossad. Others the US. There have been many retaliatory attacks on US bases throughout the Middle East lately. There are rumors that in Iran it’s an internal job. Whatever the case there is more and more pressure on Israel, especially in the North.

On Friday, we received news that the mayor of a Haifa suburb had told all his residents to invest in a generator and to have enough food, water and necessities to last at least a week. The military would be so overwhelmed it might be more expedient to rely on yourself. This, after two Hizbulla missiles were shot down over Haifa on Friday. It turned out to be ‘misinformation.’

In the meantime Israel has set a deadline of the end of January for an agreement being led by a multinational group to try to force Hizbulla to move away from the Israeli border. The agreement seems less likely as the days go by and it looks more threatening because Hizbulla forces refuse to move back.

The Lebanese Patriarch of the Maronite Catholic Church, Beshsra Al-Rahi, called for the removal of every rocket launchpad between every home; the removal of all missiles from homes and schools; UNFIL to enforce resolution 1701 pushing all Hizbulla troops off the Israeli border fence, back 2 km (no man’s land) and away from the Lebanese border. Nasralla has said no such. So it looks like there might be a showdown starting next week. The thought of 150,000 missiles pointed directly at us is a wee bit daunting-

At present 72,000 Israelis have been displaced from their homes in the North alone. Since there are no tourists, many citizens who lack family or friends who will shelter them, have been put up in hotels along the Sea of Galilee. Makeshift schools have been set up for the children. Some are being squeezed into the schools in Tiberias and the local communities.

Hizbulla in the North is a proxy for Iran, just as the Houthis in Yemen South Red Sea and Hamas in Gaza. Of the three, Hizbulla is much more greatly funded, trained, weaponized and numerous. Last week, in his latest trip to Israel, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, was assured that “ Israel would not surprise the United States by an attack on Hizbulla without prior notification.”

So we are now waiting…. You would never know as people go on with their daily lives here as best as possible. Stores and schools and services are open. There is plenty of traffic and people seem busy.

Yesterday we went to visit an Arab Christian friend who lives in the Galilee. She has two Maronite Christian families from Metulla living in the two apartments underneath hers. They were empty apartments and the landlord let the displaced famI lied live there temporarily. Claudia is a tour guide. She has so much knowledge and understanding of the history of Israel from many different perspectives. We have gone so many places with her. As during COVID, she again has no business.

Claudia also teaches classes on Israeli cooking, Biblical cooking and culture. We took a long walk with her into the fields adjacent to her apartment.

Look closely at the pictures above. What do you see? A field? Yes. What else? Grasses and weeds? Perhaps. But they hold a hidden treasure, for now that the rains have come everything had begun to sprout and turn green. All of these ‘weeds’ are edible!!!! The wild asparagus and celery. The dandelions and lettuces. The loof. And most have medicinal properties known by people in Biblical times and passed down through the generations to today.

Wild celery

When we returned to Claudia’s, she gave us a little class on how to prepare each. Some were sautéed. Some would be dried (hyssop) to make zataar, the herb that is used in many foods here. Other plants would be boiled first, then wrung out (to remove any bitterness) and then sautéed.

During the winter months, you see older women…Bedouin and Druze, mostly, out in the fields foraging. The women are everywhere along the country roads, stooped over with their aprons and plastic bags. Wild mustards are prevalent and are a special delicacy. Some leaves (loof) are large. These are destemmed, steamed and then stuffed with rice, onions, lentils and herbs, rolled up and then steamed again.

Loof grows in rocky places. It has a huge purple Jack-in-the-pulpit type flower.

We feasted on homemade labaneh, a cultured dairy product made with the goat milk Claudia got from a lady down the street. She had made pita bread in her tabun (outdoor metal oven) the day before. We had a type of feta cheese. The greens and dairy were drizzled with fresh Galilee olive oil. We had olives and homemade humus from her store of dried chickpeas. On some of the greens, Claudia cracked eggs and let them steam- a green shakshuka. On top of this she put a dollop of Zhug, a very very spicy hot pepper and herb mixture. It was all quite delicious. All homemade with fresh, local ingredients.

If you come to Israel in the winter months, not only could Claudia give an amazing tour, but you could also take a cooking class from her. Hopefully you won’t have to dodge missiles.

War Stories Day 102 16 January, 2024

To commemorate 100 days since the incursion of Hamas terrorists into Israel- brutally massacring over 1300 innocent civilians, committing heinous atrocities and taking 249 (now 139) hostages – Israel remembered. They held rallies. They attended prayer sessions at the Western Wall. They did interviews, and rang bells, and sang, and collectively grieved. Throughout the world bells rang out and rallies took place. Peaceful gatherings with lit candles and songs and prayers and posters of the captives.

To commemorate 100 days: from the White House President Biden made a speech pledging his support for all the hostages saying they will never stop working to secure the release of the Americans (although ‘Hamas won’t listen’) and to make sure more aid gets in to Gaza. The transcript can be found on Whitehouse.gov

A few hours later, Secretary of State Blinken issued a statement to Prime Minister Netanyahu: it was time to scale down and wrap up. Time for a ceasefire. They want a plan now for a renewed Gaza. One with a “revitalized Palestinian Authority “ in charge. The PA, another dictatorial terror state. The PA who will never agree to the existence of Israel at all. The PA whose oligarchs get rich off humanitarian aid, who spend money on arms and terrorist activities, who keep their innocent civilians in poverty.

The Biden administration has stated that the IDF has had enough time in Gaza – 100 days. In my counting, from the day of the massacre, it took 3 days to fully mobilize. For the next 12 days, Israel delayed a ground movement into Gaza at Biden’s request as foreign dignitaries visited and pledged their support for Israel. That is 85 days. Then in mid-November a complete pause in the fighting on all fronts occurred (by the IDF) as hostage negotiations and releases took place. 4 days were extended to 7 until Hamas broke the ceasefire with a massive missile barrage into central Israel. That’s 78 days of war. Just saying-

The IDF soldiers are fighting intense urban warfare. Homes are booby trapped with explosives. Hamas fighters dress like civilians. If they are killed, it is reported as a civilian casualty. Little children as young as 5 and 6 are used as spotters. In Khan Younis an elderly woman in a wheelchair was placed in the middle of the street. Israeli soldiers came to help her and a vehicle was called to transport her to a safe location. It’s all on film. When the soldiers gathered around her a suicide belt exploded killing 5 soldiers and wounding several. This is what Israel is up against. How does an army fight in these unprecedented circumstances?

Yet, last week attorneys from Israel’s Supreme Court defended Israel at the International Court of Justice for Genocide and Crimes Against Humanity. The world is upside down.

If you want to see the truth, it is on exposition, nothing hidden, agendas are fully exposed. The pro-Palestinian rallies are anything BUT peaceful protests. In DC, on Sunday, they violently rioted at the gates of the White House causing staff to be evacuated for their safety. There were no arrests.

In New York, there were angry protests in front of the Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for Children yesterday morning. The pro-Hamas demonstrators shouted through megaphones and threw bottles and cans at the windows of the hospital as the children looked on from the windows above. No protestor was arrested.

There were violent riots outside Gracie Mansion, NYC Mayor Adams’ home. Several NYPD members were injured. No arrests were made. Bridges and freeway entrances have been blocked by “Free Free Palestine! Long Live the Intifada!” masses. No arrests.

In London there were not only riots but speeches made. ‘Activists’ called for an escalation of violence, justified violence, not only in Israel but throughout the West. The atrocities of October 7 were labeled “a warranted response by freedom fighters for liberation and an end to the occupation.” In the predominantly Jewish quarters, businesses were vandalized and windows broken. These people are not peaceful.

It’s really time to wake up and choose sides. Israel is fighting an evil regime. We will not end this war until our captives are released and brought home dead or alive; until Hamas has been rendered incapable of firing missiles or creating terror.

As I write this, just this morning, only three hours ago, a major rocket barrage was launched from Gaza into Southern Israel. Many paramedics were called to different locations. Some of the missile strikes were direct impacts on buildings. More information forthcoming-

Yesterday, Knesset discussed letting workers from the Palestinian Authority return into Israel for jobs. They were also debating returning the tax money held by Israel to them. A portion of Israeli tax shekels have been going to the PA, but have been suspended after October 7. Defense Minister Gallant is in favor of the above, believing a stronger PA economy will foster good will and give jobs to them. Many members of the ruling coalition are decidedly against.

Yesterday, a illegal Palestinian workers from Hebron entered Israel. They targeted Ra’anana, a heavily Anglo, high-tech sector city outside Tel Aviv. One terrorist entered the car of a 79 year old woman and stabbed her to death. He pulled her out of the car and stole it, ramming it into a bus stop, critically wounding 2 and seriously injuring 7 others. After stealing another vehicle, he rammed it into a group of schoolchildren. 8 people were injured. All are in hospital. The terrorist was eliminated, but there is an active search for his older relative , also an accomplice.

The night before, three Palestinian terrorists entered a community in Judaea (West Bank) between Hebron and Jerusalem. They cut the fence and crawled under. Security cameras and motion sensors picked up the activity and the terrorists were all caught and arrested. On them were found a pickaxe, 7 knives, rope, 2 grenades, a Molotov type cocktail and 3 Carlos (illegal, homemade sub machine guns), also known as Karl Gustavs.

We are fighting on 3 fronts. Gaza. The North- Lebanon/Syria which is Iranian backed Hizbulla. The south and Eilat, the Houthis, an Iranian backed splinter group of radical Islamists from Yemen. Internally, we face violence in the Wedt Bank, Judaea and Samaria, Israel’s Biblical heartland. We will defend our borders. Our soldiers will fight for the defense of women, children, parents, the elderly, innocent civilians who only want to live out their lives peacefully. Israel is a tiny, tiny sliver of land.
