Day 290 War Stories

A Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin On

The amount of newsworthy happenings in just two or three days is enough to make one’s head spin. Just take a big breath. Have no fear. Fasten your seatbelts, because it’s a bumpy ride. We have an amazing Pilot in whom we can put our trust. Just pray and don’t worry.

Let’s start with a short recap on MidEast/World news from Friday on.

Friday, the International Court of Justice based in The Hague, Netherlands (he World Court, or judicial arm of the UN), made a decision that all Israeli/Jewish settlements in E. Jerusalem, Judaea and Samaria are illegal. This includes cities, towns, kibbutzim, rural farms. For a Jewish person to settle in Judaea is a violation of international law. Israeli (Jews)have no right to occupy Palestinian lands as they are illegal colonizers.

This is very interesting as Israel is actually de-colonizing the land. The people and state of Israel may not have intentionally set out to accomplish this from the beginning (late 1800s onward). Israel after 70AD came under the rule of the Romans, the Byzantines, the Mamelukes, the Ottomans, the British. Most of Jerusalem from1 948-1967 was under Jordanian rule. Jews and Christians were not allowed to step foot in the Old Holy City under threat of death. The Holy sites….the Western Wall, the Holy Sepulchre, the churches around Gethsemane… were used as garbage dumps. When the IDF retook Jerusalem in the Six Day War, it became a city open to all faiths. The Old City was cleaned up and revamped to a place of beauty and relative safety. It became a haven for pilgrims of the three Abrahamic faiths and a top tourist destination. Not only Jews, but Christian, Muslim, Bedouin, Druze, Baha’i and Circassian, religious and secular Israeli citizens can buy land and build in Israel. All Israeli citizens are afforded equal rights. There is no colonialization by the Jews.

Friday, the Israeli Knesset voted to definitively say there will be no recognizable Palestinian State adjacent to Israel. The Two State Solution is impossible and will not happen. To give up more land for peace is a death sentence for Israel. Both parties, from the current coalition to the opposition, voted on this. It is a historic coming-together to make a statement to the world and the international diplomacy.

For the past eight months, Houthi rebels, an Iranian backed terror proxy, have been sent over 225 missiles towards Israel’s southernmost port in Eilat on the Red Sea. From Yemen, the terrorists have been kidnapping ships in the Gulf of Aden. This is a vital international shipping lane on the Eastern Horn of Africa to the Arabian Sea and Asia. These pirates have caused the re-routing of cargo. Their missiles and weaponized aerial drones have been intercepted by Israeli, US, UK and French forces.

Friday night, a suicide drone from Yemen made it as far as Tel Aviv. At 3:12 am, coming in from the Mediterranean Coast, it missed the US Embassy building by 100 yards and crashed into an apartment building instead, killing one person, injuring eight. As the final straw, on Saturday, the Israeli Air Force, in Operation Outstretched Arm, attacked the Yemen port of Hodeida, rendering the port non-operational. This was important, not only because Israel showed that it will stand up to Iranian aggression, but it was one of the longest, most significant air strikes carried out by Israel single-handedly.

The target was a known port of entry for Iranian arms shipments and for weapons storage. It was a sign to the entire Middle East that Israel can refuel its jets mid-air and attack a target precisely, in midday, 1700 kilometers from home. The trip to Yemen is 200 kilometers farther than a trip to Tehran. All aircraft returned home safely. The port is still ablaze. Israel had refrained from attacking Yemen or the Houthis at the request of the Biden administration for fear of escalation in the region, but the suicide drone crossed the red line. The rapid and successful response to the strike within 24 hours (thanks to meticulous planning) shows the entire region that Israel will retaliate to threats from abroad. It proves that Israel can defend itself without the aid of foreign entities. It is a sign of strength, and thus, deterrence.

In other news, on Saturday, the President of Paraguay, Palacios, stated that the Paraguayan Embassy in Tel Aviv would be moved to Jerusalem. Paraguay does not sponsor terrorism, nor does she sympathize with terrorists. The country does not support a separate and recognized Palestinian state and will stand with Israel as a force for good in the world.

The North of Israel remains in a perpetual state of war. Every day the IDF targets high ranking Hizbulla officials, striking them deep in Lebanese and Syrian territory, it has intercepted daily weapons shipments from Iran, but nothing seems to deter them. Every day, scores of rockets and suicide drones cross the border into Israel. Most towns on the border, although evacuated, have been reduced to rubble. You will not hear of this from the media. Both soldiers and civilians have been killed and injured. The threat looms overhead, yet our lives here are hanging. We remain ready for imminent war, yet nothing so far seems to have been mobilized fully.

Over the past few weeks, elections have been held throughout Europe, some with surprising results. The world is rapidly shifting. It is becoming more divided, and certain cities are becoming more dangerous. For the Jews, there is a global shift towards anti Zionism/antiSemitism. Because, it is becoming increasingly unsafe for diaspora Jews, there is a marked rise in Aliyah. The Jewish population is pouring out of France, England, Canada, the United States, Australia and South Africa and moving to Israel. Some far this year there has been a 23,000 rise in Jewish people returning to their homeland. It is expected that there will be at least 8,000 – 10,000 more over the summer months.

The 2024 Summer Olympics are scheduled to begin in Paris at the end of this week. To celebrate, Adidas came out with a ‘new’ line of red tennis shoes worn by the athletes during the 1972 Olympics. This was the Munich Olympics, when the Palestinian terrorists kidnapped, tortured and murdered members of the Israeli team. The model selected to promote the shoes was Bella Hadid, a widely followed pro-Palestinian. After much protestation, both Bella and the tennis shoes were removed. She had been pictured with the colors red, green, black and white, the colors of the Palestinian flag. Since being pulled from the ad campaign, Miss Hadid is threatening to sue Adidas.

For the past two weeks, numerous Israeli and Jewish athletes set to compete in Paris have been targeted with death threats. “Dare to arrive in France, we will kill you,” has been messaged to members of the rhythmic gymnastics team. Israeli Olympic swimmer was sent a message with details for his own funeral. “You are welcome to attend the funeral of Meiron Amir Cheruti, born on 19/10/1997, died on 27/07/2024. Use the link below to get the location.” Peter Palchik has also been the recipient of creepy threats foretelling of his upcoming murder. Security is said to be heightened. The Jewish athletes are said to be increasing their bodyguards and security detail. So far no one has pulled out of any of the events.

Everyone is aware of US news from the assassination attempt on former President Trump to the resignation of President Biden from the election yesterday.

Here, I will go out on a limb. Bear with me. Back during the Obama administration, there was a real and true hatred of Israel, namely President Netanyahu. He was stood up at scheduled meetings in Washington, DC, kept waiting and ushered in through the back door of the White House as a sign of humiliation.

President Netanyahu left Israel last night for a scheduled meeting with President Biden (to discuss the Iran threat) and a scheduled speech before both houses of Congress. It all should be quite interesting. This top news lede will be completely overshadowed by Biden’s stepping down and the supposed chaotic state of the Democratic Party. Will Kamala Harris run as the Democratic Candidate and who will she pick as a running mate or will it be a totally different ticket? What about the Biden ballots and the millions of people who have already voted for him by mail? What will happen at the upcoming convention? I am predicting anything Netanyahu has to say will be absolutely buried in the current news cycle. It is the ultimate snub.

And lastly, Secretary of State Antony Blinken reported on Saturday that Iran is now within two weeks of making at least one nuclear bomb. That makes things even more suspenseful. The main thing is to have no fear. We firmly believe G-d is in control. Things might seem to be spinning to chaos, but just pray and sit tight. Tomorrow’s post will delve deeper into the times and seasons and what to watch for. One thing is for sure, events are happening at a dizzying pace and we are in for an interesting ride.

Unit 11741. A Backbone for the Soldiers. War Stories. Day 287

This post is a continuation of yesterday’s effort to provide you with vital and up-to-date information on those volunteers most able to make a difference here in Israel. I understand everyone’s resources, time and attention is stretched, but this is crucial. Please read and carefully with much prayer, decide how you can help fight the war against terror. Please, if it is only to raise awareness, to spread the word, to pass this blog along.

Unit 11741 is depending on your support in order to fight and win this war. Chaya Hitin is a valiant Woman of Valor here dedicating much time and energy to this particular project….

Indefatigable: adjective. 1. Having or showing a capacity for persistent effort; not tiring or relenting 2. Incapable of being fatigued; not readily exhausted; unremitting go in labor or effort; unyielding; not giving up

Chaya Hitin is a force in motion. She is an American Israeli, originally from New York, here for 17 years. By day Chaya is a payroll accountant at a Jerusalem law firm. She is also a devoted wife and a mother to 5 young children; a modern Israeli lioness; and a social activist in the best way possible. Her dream is to be able to heal the world and fix the brokenness of the world one problem at a time.

It all started with her giving aid to the needy of Rehovot, Israel, specifically single mothers – first directly and then through finding them the resources where the help they would receive would be most effective for them. Chaya channels all her energy and all he “spare time” to special projects. If she sees a pressing need, she’s all over it.

When the Hamas terrorist incursion into Israel shook this land on 7 October of last year, the army was mobilized and reservists were called up to man all fronts immediately. Rockets were raining down by the hundreds each day from Gaza into the south and center of the country. Hizbulla began incessantly firing their missiles into the North. Because of the internal Israeli political and social divisions, it was thought that only 60% of the reservists in Israel would report for duty. By the close of Day Two, there was a 100% turn-out rate. The thousands of reservists and Lone Soldiers flying in from around the globe, willing to fight in the existential war for the State of Israel, left the IDF logistics centers and warehouses unprepared, overwhelmed and drained of material resources.

The soldiers, from their 20s to their late 60s, had dropped everything to defend Israel. Many showed up to their units with nothing more than the clothes on their backs. By Day Three the entire country had sprung into action on war footing. People were collecting hygiene products and basic gear for the soldiers. Chaya Hitin watched as her neighborhood filled with chayalim (soldiers) left for the front at a moment’s notice. She cried as he next-door neighbor, visiting from Sderot, left his now-evacuated 8-months pregnant wife for reserve duty. He had his gun, but was still wearing his flip-flops!!! Chaya’s home became ground zero as a staging and drop off area. Wives would bring socks and underwear, uniforms and boots left behind. Parents were gathering up sleeping bags, boots and old uniforms, and Chaya would find a way to distribute them.

A soldier leaves his wife for the front armed with only his pistol, 8 October, 2023

Soldiers themselves would call a Chaya directly asking her if she knew a way to get all the necessary gear they were lacking, even though she was just a small, private citizen without access to meaningful resources. By the second week of the war, her neighbor, Maayan, who was in the bloody battles on Zikim Beach in Gaza with his unit of 100 men, reached out for immediate help. Most were young dads with several children. Their gear was old and was falling apart. Adequate protection from flying bullets and shattering grenades was not provided by the old helmets and vests. She knew she must get involved on a higher level. From a grassroots operation, over the course of the past nine months, together with the support of the incredible Rehovot community, a group of global ambassadors, and specifically Beit Chatam, Chaya was able to pull strings, raise funds in Israel and America, and procure 1.6 million shekels ($432,800) worth of tactical equipment. 1150 light, state of the art, protective and bulletproof helmets were supplied by local, Israeli suppliers and immediately distributed to soldiers in need.

Chaya’s forté lies in being a bridge between worlds, in bringing communities together in a time of disunity. At first the army had said that ‘every soldier has what he needs; that they were just catching up in delivery; that there is no shortage.’ But, in fact, there was a dangerously critical shortage of gear the soldiers needed. There were two aspects to this problem.

The first was a security issue. On 7 October, Hamas terrorists raided many of the army bases that lie adjacent to the Gaza border. They pillaged and looted the warehouses. IDF guards were shot point blank by the terrorists even before they could call for backup. What wasn’t plundered and taken back to Gaza was burned and destroyed by Hamas operatives. Even before that, much gear had been loaned by the IDF to the Ukraine in 2022/23. The U.S. emptied their storage facilities of arms and tactical gear in Israel, meant to stabilize the MidEast in times of crisis, and shipped it all to Ukraine. So all of this did create massive shortages.

The second problem was one of quality. The gear the army was providing for the reserve units was old and outdated. Uniforms, fire retardant suits, bulletproof vests and helmets were heavy and cumbersome. And, being 20-40 years old, the gear was not up to demanding and specific current urban warfare military standards. In the first months of the war, soldiers were coming out of Gaza with intense migraines and fevers. What was at first diagnosed as a type of Valley Fever, supposedly caused by the dust kicked up in Gaza, was later found out to be mold and fungus inside the helmets. They had been kept in warehouses for decades, and were unhealthy. This was disgraceful. Hundreds of IDF soldiers had to leave their units and be hospitalized in the first months of the war.

These helmets were from 1974 and still being distributed because it is all the army has

It is projected, that at the onset of the fighting, the many casualties coming in were, in part, due to faulty equipment. This is a new type of warfare. Israel is now relying on drone footage and highly technical instrumentation to seek out underground tunnels, traps laid for the battalions, booby trapped buildings, room-to-room combat. It’s like a virtual reality video game, but it’s all too real. There are human shields being used by Hamas, making the fighting more than dodgy as the IDF is trying to avoid civilian casualties even at the cost of their own lives. After flyers are dropped, telling innocent civilians where and how to evacuate the military zone, four soldiers (from the Egoz Unit) go out into the streets with megaphones warning all to clear the area. These brave IDF soldiers need as much protection as possible as they move between the buildings and through the streets.

When Chaya found out the gravity of the situation, that friends and neighbors were going into battle woefully unequipped and losing their lives, she set out to change the course of events. After seven months of a small, communal project, she joined the logistics team of Unit 11741. Working with Daniel Mael, a digital creator by day, whose family members on the front gave him initial insight into the breadth of the gear shortage, they have advocated for and fundraised for soldiers. At present, distribution has exceeded $20million worth of state of the art protective gear for soldiers. Working long hours round the clock, with no thought for personal gain, UNIT 11741 is an emergency response team on the front lines.

A truckload of new helmets from Unit 11741 for a unit in the North fighting Hizbulla

As requests for protective helmets and ceramic plates/ bulletproof vests poured in directly from individual soldiers and entire units, Hitin and Mael got to work. Gathering a small, but dedicated crew of volunteers who were 110% committed to saving the soldiers’ lives, they called and visited contacts who found other contacts in the US and Canada. They were able to bring in 15,000 helmets and thousands of vests, night vision glasses and drones. So many are alive now because of their efforts.

Priority for receiving protective gear wassually designated by the IDF to combat soldiers over enemy lines. This reality is no longer true. Everywhere was a hot zone. They get calls from thousands of IDF soldiers in Gaza all experiencing shortages. Everywhere is lethal: on all the borders, RPGs and anti tank missiles were being launched. IEDs were buried under streets in areas of Judaea and Samaria (aka ‘West Bank’) waiting for an IDF vehicle to roll over it. The drivers, the medics and paramedics, communications staff, field mechanics, and engineers and much of the military support staff were all under-protected. Hitin and Mael receive footage daily from soldiers under attack, whose bases or army vehicles were blown up.

“Something as easy as a small donation can add up and save a life of a soldier combatting evil and terrorism. This is one aspect where we can each make such a huge impact with such a small action. Make others in your area aware of our current situation. Get a group together to sponsor protective gear for a soldier. Once you become informed, it is a right moral judgement to save lives,” an impassioned Chaya explains. “ They are putting their lives on the line, willingly, for us. These brave and selfless souls are saving humanity from terror. I’m just a small cog in a larger machine. It is just so humbling to see someone who faces death, who faces personal loss, who faces severe injury every day. And yet they are willing to go back in and sacrifice to save not only Jewry and the State of Israel, but Western civilization. This is the least I can do.”

Problems arose for Hitin and Mael at every step that had to be confronted and solved immediately. All the helmets and ceramic vests that Chaya gave out had to be unequivocally ballistically tested for being bulletproof, providing full head coverage, able to mount a headlamp or camera to the front. Some equipment and gear was stopped at customs for little apparent reason. Mael and Hitin troubleshot the situation by deciding to internally source their helmets. They connected with a manufacturing plant in Netanya, central Israel, to begin producing the helmets to specific standards. This would provide Israelis with jobs, reduce the import costs, circumvent shipping and customs issues, and would be faster in turnaround time.

Still, the gear being given out would cost each soldier about three month’s salary. So many soldiers and unit commanders call each day requesting new protective gear. Unit 11741 is now asking each soldier to fundraise and contribute what he or she can towards the cost of the equipment. Currently, there are over 4000 soldiers on the immediate waiting list. Each piece of equipment given out can save the life of a soldier.

It is unfathomable that nine months into the war, the shortages are consistent and growing exponentially. The current Biden administration has held up promised shipments that during other administrations, were ordered and paid for. Wear and tear from nine months of intense battle means more materials need replacement.

It would be ideal for synagogue groups or church groups, Bible study groups, youth groups, Hillel and NCSY or those preparing for Bar/Bat Mitzvah needing a project, to adopt a soldier or a unit. One helmet costs $340. There are already reports of lives that have been saved because a soldier was wearing this helmet.

Each specifically, ballistically-tested, ceramic-plated insert and vest for maximum coverage of both torso and back while remaining lightweight and navigable is $900. Ballistic protective glasses cost $150 per pair. As of today there is a direct need of 3885 helmets, 2127 vests and 2013 ceramic plates.

Unit 11741 has a 501C and an Israeli amutah. They are a registered nonprofit. 100% of the donations go directly to the soldiers’ equipment. It is all volunteer with no overhead. You can find out more at http://www.unit11741.com. The team is on Instagram @chayasc, @unit_11741 and @themaelman. They have several YouTube videos as well.

Chaya and Mael are depending on your generosity to save the lives of the soldiers who are fighting for us all. To put this in perspective, each soldier has a family, many are young husbands and fathers. There are female combat and tank units. Young daughters. In Israel, we believe that we are all created in the image and likeness of G-d and that every life is precious. The IDF is not fighting Gaza or innocent civilians, but evil and terror-sponsoring regimes that are arms of Iran. The IDF is fighting to protect all the people of Israel. We all need and have heartfelt appreciation for your help.

Just a note: this is not only about saving soldiers’ physical lives. This also enhances and boosts morale. The IDF soldiers have put so much on the line: their families, their jobs and interests for the future of the Jewish people and Western civilization. The cost is so high. We know that Europe and North America are next on the sights of the Islamists. But it needs to end here in Israel. We all need to stand up in the fight against terror. The least we can do is to ensure the soldiers have adequate protection and their safe return to their families.

Day 279

Nine months in. So much is happening on a daily basis it’s hard to keep up here. Since I last posted, early Sunday morning, there was a barrage of over 40 missiles shot from Lebanon into the Galilee and Golan. Red alerts were in the towns all around us, and we were able to see and hear several of the IronDome interceptions from our balcony. Several of my friends in outlying communities spent the morning in bomb shelters. The targets were military bases, but most of the rockets were headed for the myriad Arabic-speaking (Muslim, Christian, Druze) population centers. The Iron Dome anti-missile system, fortunately intercepted all the rockets except for the ones whose trajectories were destined for open fields.

Point: Hizbulla does not discriminate between Jewish and Muslim and Christian population centers. Whether their aim is bad, their weapons substandard, our defense superior, or Divine providence, very few hit their intended targets. Their rockets do more psychological damage than anything else, although I am not trying to minimize the damage to homes and businesses as well as the civilian and IDF casualties.

I’ve learned to time my comings and goings to the latest local news. It seems Hizbulla sends over armed drones and rockets in the early morning, noon, around three in the afternoon, at sunset and later at night. They have a limited reach, which has never directly affected us. When the IDF targets and kills a high level IRGC or Hizbulla official or commander, the intense drone and missile strikes are launched. This is the time we know to stay close to home just in case. Last week there were two of these volleys of 40-60 missiles targeting the Galilee and the Golan. The drones are difficult to intercept because they are mostly plastic and fly quite low avoiding detection. These military grade drones supplied by Iran can carry 88 pounds of explosives and can travel at speeds of upwards of 360 mph.

Yesterday we drove up to the mountain city of Tsfat for a medical appointment. On the way up, we saw the destruction from the missile strikes this week. (We were running really late so I couldn’t get out and photograph) Patches of the Birya Forest on the side of the mountains all the way up to the road’s edge burned out. Vineyards beautifully green with a charred area surrounding a small crater were fairly prevalent. The smell of burnt wood and sulfur still hung heavy in the air. We marveled at how close some of the missile strikes came to structures (farm buildings, a random cafe, the tomb of a holy prophet) yet did not reach them. We took another route down the mountain to try to see any signs of missile strikes, but with the flow of traffic and the steep winding roads, it was nearly impossible to pull to the side and take pictures.

Late Tuesday afternoon, early evening, I received news of a direct hit on a car carrying two passengers in the Golan Heights. The incoming missiles were from Syria and were targeting the many military bases scattered throughout the Golan.

Yesterday the names of the couple were released and their funeral held. Noa and Nir Barnes, both 46, were from Ortal, very much a suburban US style community of young families. Ortal is known for their grapes and magnificent winery as well as their cherries and fruit orchards. We frequent both. The Barnes’ car was hit at the junction which is less than a mile from my son’s base when he serves in the reserves. Nir and Noa left behind three kids, ages 16,14 and 12. Our good friend’s son was best friends with Mattan, the eldest son. So it really hits home. This is a very small country. We are all affected.

On the broader news front: 3000 missiles designated to be used by Israel in defensive ops only (everything is specified, ordered, procured, contracted out, paid for and stipulated in advance in international legal contracts) have been held up by the current US administration. High level meetings between Israel and the US have been ongoing over the past couple months in order to get the weapons delivered. Yesterday an agreement was reached which will see the delivery of 1500 midsize missiles. The larger, long range missiles are still delayed. This piece of common knowledge sends a very strong message to the enemy countries that surround us. Advanced weaponry serves as a deterrent to attack by these malign forces.

In other news: the Israeli Foreign Affairs & Defense Committee has approved three bills to curtail UNRWA. The legislation will ban the organization from operating in Israel, including in East Jerusalem. It will brand it as a terrorist organization complicit with Hamas, thus requiring Israel to cut ties. It will strip staff of UN of their legal immunity ties such as tax exempt status. This is a good thing. UNRWA has been documented explicitly as housing weapons manufacturing, terrorism, terror tunnels in Gaza. Some UNRWA workers (teachers, humanitarian aid suppliers, health care workers) have been found to have definitively harbored some of the rescued Israeli hostages. They are totally complicit.

Upon its clearing Rafah in Southern Gaza, the IDF relocated what was thought to be civilian refugees back to the center of the Strip and the Gaza City area. Neighborhoods that were previously left relatively intact by the IDF because they were Christian neighborhoods, have now been found to harbor terrorists. Whether Hamas operatives have taken over the abandoned homes, schools and some church property or whether they were present from the beginning is not clear, but areas such as the Shejaiya neighborhood have become a hotbed of Hamas fighting. More terror tunnels and weapons storage facilities are being documented in video by the IDF before they are blown up. There are far more tunnels discovered than previously thought to have existed. They serve as underground passages for Hamas to run, hide, store weapons and hide hostages. Thousands of active Hamas terrorists have been captured.

The IDF is still warning civilians in active military zones to leave by dropping leaflets telling them to leave the area. They are warning the people in advance to clear out by loudspeaker and providing military coverage and pathways to safe corridors of passage. All is being carefully filmed and documented for later use. Still, there are reports of civilians who refuse to leave or who are being used under threat as human shields by Hamas.

The Gaza Health Ministry, an arm of Hamas, continually spits out inflated, and ever-changing numbers of civilian casualties and deaths. These numbers are held as Gospel truth by many journalists, leaders and global organizations. There is never a report of Hamas killed. Many of the Hamas soldiers, who once dressed in khakis and balaclavas with their signature green headband (now chic pro-Palestinian protestor fashion) have now traded in their uniforms for civvies. They are carefully disguising themselves as refugees in order to escape detection. Urban guerrilla warfare is now the modus operendi.

Many of the buildings and almost all of the tunnels are extremely booby trapped. Different tactics are used by the terrorists to lure the Israeli soldiers into a trapped building. The IDF has used different tactics in discovering hidden explosives including aerial drones, canine units and other devices to prevent being caught. Unfortunately, they are not always successful. It is intense and difficult operationally. The most extreme caution is being taken to reduce casualties, both for the IDF soldiers and for civilians.

I am currently working on several articles with documented research and interviews. In the weeks upcoming I hope to be able to share some of my investigative work with you. In the meantime, we pray for a peaceful weekend with no action and no bad news.

I am so often taken aback when the weekly Scripture reading parallels our own lives or the current news stream. It happens regularly here. To explain, in Judaism as well as many traditional forms of Christianity (Eastern/Greek/Russian Orthodox, Byzantine, Latin Catholic, Episcopal/Church of England/Anglican, Lutheran), there are pre-set readings and a set liturgy for each week of the year. This week’s readings in the synagogue are called ‘Korach’ found in Numbers chapters 16-18.

In the story, there is a national crisis within the camp of the Children of Israel. They are poised to enter into the Promised Land, ‘a Land flowing with milk and honey,’ when ten of the twelve spies sent out return with a bad report. It is at this time of weakness, when the people are disheartened, that Korach attempts a coup against their leader, Moses. Korach, speaking to the general assembly of the Jewish camp, plays upon any resentment already existing. He loudly and brazenly tries to make Moses and Aaron look ridiculously incompetent in the eyes of the people. Seeking the perfect time to challenge Moses and wrest the power for himself, he legitimizes the crisis but twists the truth for his own devious purposes.

Turning the truth on its head, he divides the Children of Israel and foments rebellion. He gets another, Dathan, to accuse Moses loudly, “You seek to dominate us!” Fake news is then served up, causing doubt about the leadership in peoples’ minds and panic to rise up and finally a coup to occur. National unity is destroyed and anarchy is the result.

The people have taken G-d out of the picture, despite His leadings, His show of the shekinah, or Divine Glory, and also His judgements and provision on behalf of the Children of Israel. Korach and his small band have run a well-calculated campaign. It’s like modern day communism. They tell the Jewish people, “We are all holy. We can all be leaders, not just Moses…” The fear of the people has turned to outright rage against the government. They are caught in a nightmare of their own making. The sinful are quickly wiped out by the L-rd Himself and a plague comes upon the people. They are also sentenced to wandering in the desert for forty years.

Yesterday we took someone to the airport , which was followed by a medical appointment in the Tel Aviv area. It seemed that over the weekend, the signs and banners had appeared overnight. I’m not trying to play sides politically. I do not agree with everything our current administration in Israel has done or are doing. I am not in favor of some of the recent decisions made regarding how the war is being conducted. That said, we are in the middle of trying to fight the war. Yes, everyone wants all the captives returned, alive and deceased. We all want a more, peaceful, just land, free from terrorism.

This is most certainly not the time for dissolution of a government or foment a coup. This is not the time for large demonstrations or disruptions Ike those we witnessed in Tel Aviv yesterday. Our wartime national slogan has been “United (together) we will win.” We were attacked during a time of perceived weakness last October. When we are united as a nation, we are strong. Our enemies are watching us and our reactions. If through propaganda or psy-ops, they can turn the heads of some Israeli citizens, they can sow the seeds of dissent.

Israel has been engaged in seemingly endless talks and negotiations to free the hostages in Gaza. Thus far, Hamas has refused. It’s been 19 times already. There is a faction, I believe a very vocal minority, who is saying that Prime Minister Netanyahu needs to resign at once. That new elections need to be held immediately. They are accusing him of delaying the end of a war in order to hold onto control of the government. That he is a dictator. That he is the devil incarnate (truly: there are graffiti slogans with Bibi=666 in prominent locations). And that he had advance knowledge of 7 October and is culpable.

In the meantime, aid has been pouring into Gaza from Jordan from Israel. Israel has filled warehouses in the Gaza Envelope with palettes of apricots, peaches, bananas, cherries, plums, corn, tomatoes, onions, watermelon, cucumbers and avocados from the Galilee, Golan and Hula and Jezreel Valleys. Dry and canned goods from Europe are all waiting on semis to be trucked into Gaza. The problem is hiring drivers to drive the truckloads across the border and risk having their lives taken and the shipments hijacked by Hamas terrorists and by opportunists.

In the United States, the White House is supporting Israel’s right to self defense. However they no longer see Hamas as a threat but an ideology which cannot be extinguished. Shipments of armaments and ammunition which have been ordered by Israel and have been paid for are not being delivered. According to Rep. Michael McCauley chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the White House has delayed the shipment of seven weapons systems. These were signed off on and approved by Congress. Iran is still openly supplying the Houthis in Yemen, rebels in Syria and Hizbulla in Lebanon with weapons.

The Biden administration is advising the IDF generals not to open a second front against Hizbulla in Lebanon. Iran is sending in thousands of IRGC reinforcements to Syria and Lebanon, as well as smuggling Afghani (Taliban) and Pakistani mercenaries into the areas North and East of Israel. Yoav Gallant, Israeli Defense Minister held meetings with US Cabinet officials last week in which dialogue, cooperation, and red lines were discussed. The US and members of NATO are hoping to stave off a full blown war in the North with Hizbulla…at least for now.

Iran is currently holding elections for President. There are three choices, all backed by the ayatollah, as a replacement for the one recently killed when his helicopter crashed. So far, only 19% of Iranians have cast their ballots. Iran is currently capable of producing nuclear tipped ICBMs with the uranium enrichment program that was restarted three years ago. They are now saying that if Israel goes after Hizbulla in Lebanon, they will enter the war in a most unwelcome way. We shall see-

Since the founding of Israel, the ultra Orthodox Haredi men have enjoyed military exemption. While all the other young Jewish men ages 18-21 are serving cumpulsory service, if an Orthodox man aged 18-30 is enrolled in a Yeshiva (Torah/Talmud study) he not eligible for conscription. Last week the Supreme Court ruled that they, too, must serve in some way (there are plenty of openings for non-militants which would also lead to future job training for them). It has always been a hot button among Israelis. Much of Netanyahu’s coalition government is made up of these ultra-orthodox. Many have said they will refuse to comply with the new law. Quite a few are already in the service. Much depends on the rabbis, who hold a lot of sway among their communities. There are already squadrons of Haredi fighters active in Gaza at this time.

In the meantime, to answer a few of your inquiries, I am currently working on a list of places to donate to help the families of soldiers;the families of those who have lost a husband or father who was the primary breadwinner; and to help meet the needs of the soldiers themselves. I occasionally hear of old supplies being used (protective gear) that are in need of being updated for increased safety. I hope to have that blogpost out next week.

In the meantime, it was a fairly quiet weekend for us. We pray for peace on all fronts, but also for evil to be vanquished and for the captives to be rele@ed or found. Please, G-d- and please bring our country into complete unity so we can go forward victorious under G-d.

The Beat Goes On Day 255

It was an unusually quiet weekend after expecting the absolute worst. We were ready to make the move into the bomb shelter if need be, but, thankfully, nothing, nada, bupkess, zoltz. Which is good. Until we got the news at the end of the Shabbat that 11 of our IDF soldiers had been killed. One had succumbed to past wounds received a couple weeks ago. The others were in a tank that was waylaid by a remote-controlled roadside bomb.

Wassim Mahmoud was another downed Druze soldier. His community was on the next ridge over from us. The tank commander, 47 year old Elon Wais, was the father of three, a high school teacher. Stanislav Kostrov, 19, was recently here from Russia. Altogether they left behind 7 children. Two of the wives are pregnant. In Israel we don’t celebrate martyrs. We neither hand sweets when the enemy is struck down nor do we party when our own are cut short. Life is valued highly, so for us, it is a heavy, heavy day of mourning with flags at half mast again.

In good news, Maya Regev, 21, who had been captured from the Nova Music Festival on October 7 with her brother Itai, 18, was released from the hospital. On the morning she was taken, Maya was shot very badly in both legs and foot. She was taken alive to the home of a UNRWA doctor, a field veterinarian, who sewed her foot back onto her ankle….at a most unnatural angle. After her release back to Israel in the December hostage exchange for Palestinian prisoners, Maya and Itai were both hospitalized at Soroka Medical Center. Maya underwent several reconstructive surgeries, and had to wear a brace on her leg for five months. She was released to relatives over Shabbat, and will have to continue intensive physical therapy for quite some time. But she is back. She is in good spirits.

Babies are being born in Israel and so many women we know are pregnant. There is expected to be a huge baby boom from next month through the end of the year. Maternity wards and midwives are already gearing up for the delivery deluge. A huge Mazal Tov goes out to Yuval Shani, the widow of Cptn. Gabriel Shani, 28, who fell in Gaza 4 months ago. She is journeying alone in life now without her partner, as so many war widows are here. Her little baby, their third child, was born last week.

Dolev and Sigal had been best friends from childhood. They were inseparable growing up in the Nir Oz Kibbutz. It was only natural that after their army service, they would get married and start a family back in Nir Oz. On the morning of 7/10, Dolev told his wife to get in the safe room with their three children. He went out to defend the kibbutz. For some reason, terrorists did not enter their home that morning. But Dolev never returned. It was presumed he was taken hostage into Gaza. Nine days later, their fourth child, Dor Yehud, was born to Sigal.

Sigal wrote a song, “Air to Breathe,” hoping against hope that Dolev would hear it while in captivity. It soon turned out to be a song in his memory, because just before its release, Dolev’s body was found, and he was buried in Nir Oz.

In other news, on a brighter, human interest note, Shemesh Ezer is 65 years old. This paratrooper has never nice missed a day of his reserve duty. He is still in the elite 551 Commando Brigade. Shemesh inspires the young guys and they him. This entire nation is made up of unsung heroes who risk their lives daily to insure the existence of the Jewish homeland.

Some time back, I wrote of the young family who was burned when a terrorist threw a grenade into their home and then the house was set on fire. Ariel and Ellay’s Golan were huddled in their safe room with their 18 month old daughter. Ariel held the door of their shelter closed as long as possible, until they began to suffocate from smoke inhalation. They managed to escape out the window through the flames with their baby, running to a tractor and hiding there for hours in a wheat field. A group of soldiers found them and had them helicoptered to Sheba Hospital. Ellay lost consciousness only after giving first responders instructions on how to care for the nursing baby.

Ellay Golan spend two months in a coma, having received burns to 60% of her body. Her lungs were badly damaged and she was not expected to live. Ariel was burned over 40% of his body, and little Yale suffered 30% burn coverage. They all survived, thanks be to G-d, due to an innovative treatment developed in Israel called NexoBrid. They made tremendous and remarkable recoveries. But the story does not end here.

Last week, Ellay Cohen graduated from Ben Gurion University with her Doctor of Medicine degree, her hands still in bandages.

It seems just as we get used to the craziness around us, the sand beneath our feet shifts. It seems members of the US State Department and the Biden admin are here in Israel again. Last week, Gantz of the opposition party, quit the War Cabinet. He tried to dissolve the Coalition in order to dissolve the government and call for new elections. But Netanyahu still held a majority. Now we are hearing the generals in Gaza are calling for planned pauses in the fighting to allow in even more humanitarian aid. It turns out the generals have been taking their orders from the Israeli Supreme Court. Just a couple hours ago, Netanyahu dissolved the war cabinet. We have no idea who is taking orders from whom or what it will mean.

There are many people in the international community who are calling for a complete ceasefire. That the IDF needs to pull out of Gaza completely. Then the hostages will be released. And then what? Hamas will have a chance to re-arm and then come and attack again? They have already called for numerous October 7ths. There is so much pressure. Pressure from Hizbulla in the North, a powder keg waiting to explode. The French have been in Lebanon all weekend speaking with members of the terror group and members of the government.

In order for President Biden to hold on to his presidency and win the next election, he must have something to claim: a military win; a brokered ceasefire; a peace accords. At present the administration is trying to get Saudi Arabia to sign an accord with Israel in exchange for a two state solution. Palestine and Israel peacefully coexisting side by side.

In the latest poll, which came out two weeks ago, over 73% of all Palestinians in the West Bank (Judaea and Samaria) are siding with Hamas. Fatah, or the Palestinian Authority, is losing their power and their popularity among the people. Most Palestinians polled want a one-state, Islamic ruled free Palestine, which would be Jew free, judenrein. There seems no easy fix at this time. We have found out that the majority of Gazans were complicit with Hamas. Whether too afraid to go against them or not, many were complicit in fighting, hiding arms in their homes, letting their homes be used for terror tunnels, and educating their children to hate Israel and kill Jews.

If you look at who is saying what in the Western nations, watch the pro-Palestinians. They are not a peaceful bunch. They are now vandalizing and actively threatening not only Jewish people, but those in power who go against them (chancellor of UCLA, Brooklyn Museum admins, even President Biden). Their threats have teeth. Their goal is the Islamization of Europe and the US and Canada.

I had not intended to rant this way. We had guests over for lunch and got involved in some heated talk about current events. In a nutshell, most of Israel, despite their like or dislike for Netanyahu, see that there is a job that needs to be finished. And that is to fight evil. To completely disarm Hamas. To somehow, reshape their ideology. To get our hostages back, both alive and dead… by any means necessary. We cannot afford these pauses. We cannot afford to stop the war effort. We must win this war or our enemies will prey upon perceived weakness.

Signing off for now as our kids are all making their belated dad’s day FaceTime calls. Hopefully tomorrow will bring better news.

It’s Getting Hot in Here!

Always such drama. And the temps keep rising. We found out just before we went to Jerusalem on Monday that our “host” was unaware of our even being invited – it was a third party invite – so we had to scramble like the dickens to find anything available on the evening and day of a major holiday. Crazy, no? Pressure, no? Luckily, there were none of the usual tens of thousands of tourists that flood the city during a holy time, and we managed to find a gorgeous room right at the Old City Walls for an incredibly cheap price.

I was smart enough to bring our own food from home as EVERYTHING closes around 2pm from markets to transportation on the evening of a holiday or Sabbath. And to bring my all-white clothes, as is customary to wear on Shavuot, the Feast of Weeks or the Giving of the 10 Commandments to Moses at Mt. Sinai.

The next day we finally met up with our friends at the Hurvah Synagogue to hear the Torah reading of the Ten Commandments. Two of the men and their wives had been up all night studying the book of Ruth, the Torah and other subjects. This is traditional for Shavuot. Something I used to do a few years ago – I am now sorry I didn’t attend the women’s study sessions. But as young as they were, they were pretty exhausted when we met.

Shavuot marks the birth and the death of King David. I did not realize this. So we went to David’s tomb, which was pretty packed. The Upper Room where Jesus celebrated the Last Supper is located in the same building just above David. I also had not realized this. It was locked, but the roof access was open, so we went up there to pray and to chat. There were a few people already up there, including a group from Hong Kong, of all places. So a lady we spoke with was kind enough to take a photo of us.

Max came home for the day to babysit our doggie (a spoiled rotten long-haired dachshund, Haggis). Usually I don’t answer my phone on Shabbat or holidays, but the buzzing wouldn’t stop and was driving me nuts. By 9:30 I must have gotten more than 50 buzzes, so I finally checked, just to see if Max needed something, or if, G-d forbid, there was another attack.

It turns out the IDF hit a really high level Hizbulla commander on Sunday night. This combined with the hostage rescue in Gaza and Hizbulla’s solidarity with Hamas, and they were angry, angry, angry. And wanted to teach us a lesson. From Tuesday night through Wednesday there were over 200 rockets/missiles directed at the Upper and Lower Galilee and the Golan Heights. Our friends’ daughter served as an IDF nurse at the hospital in Tsfat. When David, Jocelyn’s dad, picked her up at 9, they were dodging shrapnel the whole way home. Our friends in Korazin, in Migdal, in Tiberias spent most of the morning in their bomb shelters. All the people in the Sea of Galilee hotels who’ve been displaced by the war since October were even more traumatized. Katsrin and other locations in the Golan received direct hits as did Metulla and Kiryat Shmona. Fires caused by incendiary carrying drones from Lebanon were burning in many places. Even towns far south like Cana, Tura’an, Mughar (all Muslim), Tavor (as in Mt Tabor), and the Jezreel Valley were hit.

So it’s been pretty incessant for the last two days. The jets and copters are once again nonstop strafing the skies here – all day and all night. Don’t know if it’s recon, retaliatory or just to let Hizbulla and proxies know we’re still in the game? And the outdoor temps are reaching a sizzling 99*/39* throughout the weekend. I feel so badly for the firefighters and the troops out there in all their protective gear. And we just heard the rumor that the IDF got Nasralla’s brother (head of Hizbulla) in an air strike in Lebanon early this morning. So we expect “the temperatures to climb” even higher this weekend.

I went out early this morning to do some grocery shopping. Every morning I recite Psalm 121 It’s become one of my favorites (YouTube Omer Adam singing ‘Esa Einai,’ the Psalm in Hebrew!!!). “I lift my eyes to the mountains, from whence comes my help. My help comes from the L-rd…” So these days as we’re driving I lift my eyes continually to the next mountain ridge over. Except I’m looking for drones and missiles and interceptions. And trying to figure out where the next community shelter is. The International Council of Christians and Jews has placed 24person concrete bunkers on every other corner. Thank you US givers!! It’s become an interesting life for us….but we still feel safer here than anywhere else. So far only four people have been mildly injured from shrapnel here. I think there are angels up there watching over us.

So we are now beginning to hear ‘the rest of the story’ of how the actual rescue of the four hostages earlier this week went down. It was like a Fauda episode, only it was real life. Undercover elite Israeli spies who spoke fluent Arabic, including women disguised in burkas and hijabs, posed as wealthy Gazans, Hamas associates escaping the IDF in Rafiah, rented a house in the Nuseirat neighborhood. They were there to gather intelligence, to confirm suspicions that Noa Argamani was being held in the vicinity. Super-cool, nu?

They confirmed not only Noa, but the three men down the street being held by the journalist. The spies vacated in undercover cars and on foot on 5 June, and Yamam elite began the planning and training that night. The mission was executed the next morning. The captives were all safely rescued, but complications arose due to heavy fire from the Hamas terrorists embedded in the neighborhood. It seemed every home in the area had someone with a gun, an RPG or grenade. Cmdr. Arnon Zamora, 36, fathers of 2, was killed in the melee. Gaza Health Ministry first said 197, then amended to 436, later revised down to 274 innocent Palestinian civilians were killed. There was no specification of how many of these innocents were actually terrorists.

It’s getting late and I must start food prep and last minute cleaning before Shabbat, but let me leave you with a few bits from the North this morning. All non-necessary clubs, activities, shops, classes, religious or other are canceled in Tsfat, Ma’alot, Nahariyya, Rosh Pina, Sea of Galilee communities (see map). Sirens have sounded in Northern towns all day, although now it seems quiet. The smoke makes me feel like I’m back in Southern California during brushfires season. We are thoroughly prepared and as the Brits say, we ‘keep calm and carry on.’ Like, what else can one do? We had volunteered to go cherry picking in the Golan with friends next week, it now, it looks like that will be canceled. Again, this harvest season, much of the produce is going unpicked. Hopefully soon-

In the meantime, I wish us all a very peaceful and very quiet, and very relaxing weekend. Until next week💙🇮🇱💪🏼🙏🏻🩵 אם ישראל חי The people of Israel live.

The Rescue and the Return. Day 246. War Stories

Despite yesterday being Shabbat, when many people in Israel disconnect their phones, good news has a way of traveling very quickly.

In an operation of combined forces of Shabaq/Shin Bet; Yamam, the police elite counter terrorism unit; Shayetet 13, the Naval commandos; the paratroopers and the IDF armored vehicle units raided two separate residential buildings in Nuzeirat, central Gaza in a surprise mission carried out in broad daylight. The details of this daring operation had been worked out for several weeks requiring exact timing and complex planning. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant reported that it was “one of the most heroic and extraordinary operations I have witnessed over the course of 47 years serving in Israel’s defense.”

Four hostages were rescued alive from Gaza. You might remember seeing footage of the young Noa Argamiani,25,being abducted by a gang of terrorists on a motorcycle into Gaza, the look of abject terror on her face, arms pleading for help. She was being held in a location separate from the other three men who were saved: Shlomi Ziv,40, Andrey Kozlov, 27, and Almog Meir-Jan, age 21. Now they are liberated! Thanks be to G-d and the IDF. They are home.

“Don’t Kill Me!!!”

Helicopters touched down on the beaches under heavy fire, and simultaneously SWAT teams entered the two buildings (family homes in the middle of a busy city, aka refugee camp) separated by hundreds of meters. The two locations were each heavily protected by Hamas in the densely packed neighborhoods. Yet the decision had been made to rescue them from the busy civilian area. Hamas operatives were launching RPGs among the civilians to keep the hostages from being saved. It is horrible to learn that civilians were also killed, but they were being used as literal human shields. One of the IDF elite commandos, Arnon Zamora, was killed in the daring rescue, in what is now known as Operation Arnon. The army managed to eliminate the terrorists without any harm to the four held captive. Several IDF soldiers were lightly to moderately wounded by shrapnel. The entire mission took just under an hour to complete.

Hamas made the choice to locate the captives in very heavily populated civilian areas and worked to blend them in with the civilians. That choice cost many Palestinians their lives. UNWRA, Save the Children, Doctors Without Borders and the Red Crescent all operate in that area. Not once were any of these relief aid workers officially put in touch with the hostages that we yet know of. If they knew anything….or if anyone knew anything about where the hostages were being held, they had a moral duty, if only anonymously to report the information to the IDF or leak it to the internet. How many Palestinians are innocent and how many are complicit?

During the rescue operation, intense gunfire and RPG attacks targeted the elite special ops forces throughout the extraction. The IDF had no choice but to send in ground troops and Air Force backup. The IAF launched several targeted strikes in the area to protect the escapees. According to IDF reports, many Palestinian civilians were killed. Hamas also launched anti-aircraft missiles at Israeli helicopters during that intense time. They were unsuccessful in bringing down any aircraft. However, the escape vehicle was immobilized by heavy fire and ground troops had to transfer the four to a safer vehicle. This was when Cmdr. Zamora was shot.

All four evacuees were helicoptered without needing special assistance and taken to Sheba Medical Center where they were declared to be in good condition. After being medically examined, they were all reunited with their families. But the story does not end here.

Noa arrived home and was reunited with her father. It was his birthday. What a surprise for him, when IDF instructed him to go to Sheba to meet his daughter. Noa was able to fulfill the wish of her dying mother. Her mother has stage four terminal brain cancer, and all she prayed for was to be able to see her daughter before she died. Liora Argamani is from China. She came to study in Israel in 1994, met her husband, Yaakov, converted to Orthodox Judaism, became a citizen and married Yaakov. Liora petitioned the Chinese government to come to the aid of their daughter, but they adamantly refused to assist in any way.

Since her release, we have found out that while captive, Noa Argamani was forbidden to speak any Hebrew, but was taught and could only communicate in Arabic. Noah was held in a cramped closet of an upscale home belonging to an AlJazeera journalist, Abdallah Aljamal, and his father, a doctor at the Shifa Hospital Complex. The father also worked closely with Hamas, the Red Crescent (Red Cross) and UNRWA. The Gaza-based photojournalist often reported from the “March of Return” rioting at the border fence from 2021-2023. Noa told her family that her captors denied her showers, but eventually after months of pleading gave her a bucket of water and some soap. She was only allowed outside to get fresh air once every couple weeks. When she was allowed out, under heavy guard, she was completely covered in a burka so she would not be recognized.

Shlomi Ziv, 40, was working as a security director at the Nova Music Festival on October 7. He was responsible for getting hundreds of young concertgoers out of harm’s way to safety. He was brutally beaten, hogtied and taken hostage to Gaza where he stayed for 245 days. He was brought back home safely to his wife, children and family. It was an amazing reunion.

Almog Meir-Jan’s story is heartbreaking. When he was admitted to Sheba, his mother and grandfather were waiting for him. IDF representatives came to Almog’s father’s apartment to tell him the good news of his son’s rescue and imminent homecoming. There was no answer at the door. His sister, Dina, who had a key, entered the apartment and found Yossi Jan had passed away. His father, Almog’s father, believing he would never see his son again, and not knowing of the rescue operation, had died earlier that morning. They said he died of a broken heart. Dina told reporters that all the stress over repeated hostage release fails contributed to Yossi’s death. He just could not bear it any longer. He died twenty hours prior….

“To all the families of the hostages, we are with you. Please, please, do not break. Try to take care of yourselves too, your own health. Also for them. They will need you when they come back. And you never know. It might be now,” said their family rabbi.

Members of the family spoke with news reporters at a press conference. They said that Almog had kept some sort of special diary or calendar each day while he was being held in captivity. That way he would be able to know certain holidays and mark time. Today is his mother’s birthday…. another great gift.

Little has been written or spoken of the last captive, Andrey Kozlov. All the information I could gather was that he lives in Israel with his brother. His parents from Russia, were notified and landed in Israel (by plane) this morning. The family was reunited with Andrey at Sheba.

Last night our time, many of the major US news networks reported on the entire event. Only they got it completely wrong. They called it a hostage release. I state: There were no negotiations. There was no deal struck with Hamas leaders. There was no hostage release. It was a planned rescue, an intense military operation. There is a huge difference.

This morning, we also heard that President Biden had worked closely with the Israeli government and shared intelligence with them. As far as we know here, or has been reported, there could be nothing further from the truth. However, after taking credit for this, if there is even a shred of truth to the story, is this the intelligence that Biden threatened to hold back if Israel didn’t do what he wanted? Would this have meant the hostages could have been rescued sooner if politics were not played? Just throwing it out there, but we will see, as I have no doubt the matter will be completely exposed-

In the meantime:

WRONG AGAIN!!!!!!

We pray for the safe release of all the other 119 steed held in captivity.

Northern Heat. War Update 6 June, 2024

Temperatures have dramatically risen in the North of Israel over the past two weeks. The heat of summer is here, and despite the absence of reporting over the mainstream media, Iranian proxies are dialing up the heat on Israel militarily.

The Israeli government/IDF were warned by the global community not to enter the last Hamas stronghold, Rafia/Rafah in Southern Gaza. As it turned out, the IDF, after relocating as many Gazan civilians as possible to safer territory in the middle of the Strip, did enter Rafia with surgical precision. They acted upon intelligence gathered by drone surveillance and through interviewing captured Hamas terrorists. Engaging in the most extreme urban warfare known to date, with the use of drones, robotics and trained dogs, the IDF battalion have dismantled intricately and intensely booby trapped buildings and hidden underground shafts and tunnels. Over 70 tunnels were found leading into Egypt. Some of these were large enough for a small truck to fit through. These were used for smuggling weapons in and people (hostages? Hamas leaders?) out. The “Philadelphia Corridor,” aka the border between Gaza and Egypt has been successfully secured.

As soon as Israeli troops entered Rafia, missiles were launched by Hama into central Israel. The Houthis in Yemen targeted several tankers and ships in the Gulf of Adin/Arabian Sea and the Red Sea. Missiles, intercepted by Iron Dome and David’s Sling, were sent towards Eilat, Israel’s southernmost city. Iraqi and Syrian missiles and drones were launched into the Golan Heights. Every day there has been continuous shelling (rockets, missiles, suicide drones, RPGs, antitank artillery) from Hizbulla in Lebanon into the Galilee.

The attacks have increased to now over 100 incursions per day. Missiles have been targeting cities further south and deeper into Israeli territory as far as Akko, Maalot, Karmiel and the Tsfat area. Iron Dome and the IAF have been successful in preventing any of them from reaching their intended targets. Drones, which are very hard to detect by radar, have been carrying incendiary materials in their payloads. This has caused major brushfires near the northern border which have destroyed thousands of dunams (acreage) of vineyards, orchards, farmland, grazing pastureland and forested areas. The environmental damage between the ravaged land and the air pollution is catastrophic.

It has been reported that Northern Israel is the only place where firefighters are “fighting fires while under fire.” They have to wear special protective gear and carry pistols and machine guns, as they are always being shot at by the Hizbulla militias. The brushfires are raging for several reasons:

  • Because of the heat and entrance into the dry season, most of the underbrush has dried out. There is much thicker dried material this year due to the abundance of rains this past winter
  • The airplanes that carry fire-retardant are not able to fly. They are large and slow and fly low to the ground, making them easy targets for RPGs
  • Hizbulla has been sending over suicide drones laden with incendiary materials that explode into fireballs when their payload is released.
  • For the past week, Israel has been experiencing an early summer heat wave with high winds, helping any fire started to easily spread out of control

There are over 73,000 people displaced from their homes near the Lebanese border since 8 October. Included in these are Jewish agricultural kibbutzim, Druze towns, Circassian villages, and a several villages of Orthodox Christian, Maronite Israeli Christians of Lebanese dissent, and Aramean Christians. Many of these Christian communities have fled Islamic persecution in Nazareth and Cana and other formerly Christian areas in Israel (as well as Lebanese Christians who fled to safety as refugees during the 2nd Lebanese war). The Iranian backed militias have stated they will continue to shell the area in order to prevent Israelis from moving back – to whatever is now left of their homes.

Thus far, 14 IDF soldiers have been killed and 10 civilians. Yesterday afternoon, there was a football practice (soccer) in the beautiful Druze town of Hurfeish. The Hizbulla drone dropped its payload onto the field. 11 people were injured, several critically. They were evacuated to nearby Western Galilee Hospital. Have you heard about this attack on innocent civilian youth in your media? If not, why? These were not Jewish people, they were Druze Israeli citizens. It was a calculated, precise strike.

Hizbulla has been improving their weaponry and methods of attack. They have been studying to find out what works and what is most effective. Several military bases have incurred direct hits, including the decommissioning of our intelligence balloon. Over the past 8 months, over 4000 projectiles have been fired upon the North.

Yesterday, Prime Minister Netanyahu visited the area. He issued a statement that Israel is “ prepared for very intense action in the North” in order to restore security and allow the displaced to return home. President Isaac Herzog said that “Israel has been attacked every single day for months by Iran’s proxies in Lebanon, who crudely violate international treaties. The world must wake up and understand that Israel is left with no choice but to defend its citizens.” And Gen. Herzi HaLevi said that any day, Israel will make critical decisions on how and when to respond with full force.

With that said, the international press will begin to fully cover this ongoing story only when Israel fully engages with its neighbors to the North. We have received reliable news from one of the commanders of the Northern Reserve units, that the Christian population of Southern Lebanon have been killed or chased from their homes by the Islamic terrorists. In their place, Islamic terrorists from Pakistan and Afghanistan have taken over their residences and established weapons storage and rocket launching sites. The Israeli Air Force has made surgical strikes on these locations and targeted known terror bases as far north as the Bekaa Valley. So far, it has been a tit for tat. Several high ranking members of Hizbulla have been killed by IAF in targeted air strikes.

We have no way of foretelling what will happen exactly – or when- or with what intensity. We do know that Hizbulla has over 150,000 missiles pointed at us. Everyone I have talked with says something must be done and that there will be an all-out war. It is only a matter of time. Everyone knows this is when Israel will truly stand alone and be forced into ceasefire and peace talks. We pray there will be no kidnappings or repeat of the October Massacre. We pray that as much as Israel has tried to protect innocent Gazan civilians from harm’s way, that she will also have the same respect for her own civilian population.

Blindsided

We started off the weekend with a real BANG here in Israel. Literally. There were loud booming sounds around 8am as IDF jets scrambled and intercepted a rocket and a suicide drone over Akko, only about 12 miles down the road. Akko is a world heritage sight on the gorgeous Mediterranean coastline. It is famous for its Crusader structures – immense hospital, Knights Templar dining hall, fortress, tunnels, chapels – as well as its rich history as a trading town and jewel of the Sultanate. This multicultural Arab Muslim and Christian as well as Jewish city is host to a thriving souk, several historic mosques, Franciscan and Orthodox churches, as well as a farmers’ market and numerous synagogues. There’s no other place quite like it, and whenever we have visitors, we make it a point to take them here. Hizbulla has no regard whether they are targeting Jew or Gentile, modern or historical, as long as it’s Israel.

I’m writing another (paid) article on comedy during the war. Israelis find things to make fun of or we would surely go mad. There has to be humor even in the darkest recesses. It’s one of our coping mechanisms and means of survival. So, hopefully by now everyone has heard that the US was building a pier to be able to unload groceries to Hamas…Oops. I mean Gaza. Kinda like door to door same day delivery. Because dropping MREs from airplanes and killing innocent civilians when the parcels fell on their heads just didn’t work. And for some reason, the Biden admin didn’t believe that the 180+ truckloads/ day that Israel was allowing in was getting hijacked by the terrorist organization. How could it be?

So the US sunk over $320 million taxpayer dollars to build a pier. Only, the army engineers were being shot at and were dodging Hamas launched RPGs, so they subcontracted the project over to the UK naval engineers who charged an additional unholy amount to the US. Well, the pier was up and operational for about ten days before it was reported that Hamas operatives were stealing the food off trucks before it could reach the civilian population. “We couldn’t believe it. Eleven trucks were cleaned out by Palestinians on the journey to the World Food Program warehouse in Deir ElBala,” a UN official told Reuters.” “They just basically mounted on top of the trucks and helped themselves to the food parcels.”

A Gaza civilian told our Arutz 12 News, “There is a lot of theft of the aid. It is no longer just Hamas. We see how Gazans just help themselves. There is no one to secure it and in the end it does not reach us. It winds up on the black market in Khan Younis and Rafia. Israel just pulled out of the middle of Gaza and now reverting us in chaos. Every man for himself, looking out for his own interests. Just anarchy.” The news reported that since the start of the war, Hamas has made over $500 million selling stolen goods at inflated prices to those with the most cash.

Also, as if this is not irony enough, the American-designed pier wasn’t built to withstand waves any taller than 3 feet nor could it handle sustained winds of less than 15mph, I kid you not. In fact, every trial of this type of pier has been a complete failure. So you’ll never guess what happened…. No really. I dare you to take a guess.

As Deputy Press Secretary for the Pentagon, Sabrina Singh, stated: On Saturday, May 25, four U.S. army vessels supporting the maritime humanitarian aid mission in Gaza were affected by heavy sea states, causing the motorized pier sections, which are used to stabilize the Trident Pier, to break free from their anchors due to a loss in power. Two of the pier sections washed ashore North of Gaza on the Ashkelon Beach. The other two had to be searched for with the assist of the Israeli navy recovered. Now highly damaged, they remain ‘in the shop’ being fixed by a bunch of local Israeli dockworkers and welders in Ashdod. They will then be towed back to Gaza and reinstated. I’m sure you can only imagine the memes and comedy sketches that have been going around on this subject.

So later Friday, I had morning coffee with another lovely neighbor who I hope to introduce you to soon. Then it was off to write a blogpost, followed by last minute cooking and cleaning for Shabbat. Hizbulla terrorists had been firing rockets and launching suicide drones into Northern Israel and parts of the Golan Heights all day. I believe there were over one hundred, sending many people scrambling into shelters. About an hour before sunset, when preparations are usually at their busiest (Shabbat is like a Thanksgiving meal…only it happens every week), we heard six very loud crashing booms. It sounded like steel beams being dropped into the large metal roll-off trash bin across the street. The whole house shook and the windows rattled. And my red alerts for this area were going crazy. Incoming!!!!

So what did John & I do? We rushed outside with our phones hearing the jets overhead. I needed to get shots of any action. I guess we’re bona fide Israelis now. Many of our neighbors were also in the street looking up, pointing and snapping photos. I managed to capture the puffs of smoke after the Iron Dome interception of six ballistic missiles overhead.

So being officially Israeli, I quickly uploaded all the excitement to my Instagram account @eemahleh and got back to making the salads. John went back in the house and finished setting the table. And the red alerts continued, just not so close to us.

OK. So let me confess. I am addicted to my iPhone. My entire life revolves around it. I’m sure you understand: appointments, recipes, prayers, news, photos, phone, entertainment and more. It’s all there. But on Shabbat, many of us in Israel put aside our electronics for the time of rest. So I didn’t see or hear the news. Few of us did.

Friday evening, shortly after Israelis, religious and secular, sat down to the traditional Friday night (family) meal, phones and TVs off, Joe Biden made his speech. I had heard people say get ready, because his poll numbers seemed to drop after the Trump verdict. Dropping polls never spell out good news for Israel. And BANG! Blindsided!

President Biden in an egregious and bold move on Shabbat, when Israel would neither hear nor respond, held a press conference. Not only was the premise an outright fabrication, but it put our government in a horribly tight spot. I will post the X statement he made to illustrate the point. Note the wording…

Israel has offered a roadmap…”. Neither Netanyahu nor the Knesset members nor the military had any inkling this was constructed, much less even a thing. It came out of nowhere. There was no plan. There were no talks. There was no agreement. Biden was painting Israel into a corner when there would be no immediate response. Shabbat, remember. It was very tricksy. Very evil to do this behind a sovereign government’s back.

Netanyahu has said repeatedly that our mission in Gaza will not be finished militarily until there is no capability from Hamas to regroup, rearm or re-attack. The IDF would not stop the pressure on Hamas until all the hostages were found or brought home. Israel has given Hamas 11 different terms of negotiations including military pauses, trading captives for convicted Palestinian prisoners (and has released 180 in jail for capital crimes since October 7), and has increased aid into Gaza. Hamas has always refused the deals. Flatly.

There will be no withdrawal as long as they continue to lob missiles into central Israel, which is still happening on a near daily basis, albeit with less frequency and intensity. When they wish to surrender completely to the IDF; when Hamas will give back all the hostages live and dead, then the war will be completely over. Not until then. Not when they want to commit the same atrocities and massacre over and over again.

So Biden unrolled his plan for complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. For Palestinians to move back into the Northern part of Gaza, where the IDF was just recently still uncovering terror tunnels shafts, rocket launchers next to schools, and arms caches inside mosques. He unrolled his plan for the IDF to withdraw from Gaza as part of plan two….if Israel left in plan one, why was plan two including this? Nothing makes sense. And to trade Israelis held captives for the release of hundreds more terrorists to go back into Gaza. Yes. That insures the complete safety of Israel.

“… the temporary ceasefire would become, in the words of the Israeli proposal, ‘ the cessation of hostilities permanently.’” stated Biden. Hello? The Israeli proposal? What proposal? Sir, there was no such proposal! Phase three insures the return of the dead bodies held by the terrorists since 7 October in return for a complete reconstruction of Gaza. By who? At whose expense? On whose oversight?

Biden then went on in his speech to take a jab at our right-fielded Knesset members who “want to keep fighting for years and hostages are not a priority for them” Shame! He absolutely smeared BenGvir and Smotrich and other government members including Netanyahu. He is trying to divide and throw political dissent into our country, something Israel fell for last year, something that made Israel weak. He then went on to outright threaten the Israeli people with impending economic, military and social defeat if this plan was not supported.

In an unprecedented move, Prime Minister Netanyahu broke with Sabbath tradition and made a public speech. It was a defiant retort to the White House administration. He reiterated that Israel’s conditions for ending the war remain unchanged. Hamas must no longer be able to pose a threat to the state of Israel. Of course, Hamas praised the ‘deal’ and accepted the terms of Israeli withdrawal, permanent ceasefire and increased aid and reparation packages.

So, do you see, that by Hamas accepting and Israel rejecting a plan forward (that they never even saw), makes Israel the bad guy? The international community will pipe up in the coming days: Israel won’t stop fighting. Israel won’t play fair. Israel just won’t give up. Israel just wants genocide. All eyes on Rafah – and away from Biden’s dropping poll numbers.

And of course, the literal backstory… Former President Obama is fully on board with and backs Biden’s (oooooopsy…I thought it was Israel’s) plan to go forward.

That’s all I have to say, except that all day we’ve been getting red alerts. Bombs on the Golan, rockets fired at Akko, Rosh HaNikra, Nahariyya, Shavei Tsiyon, Achziv – all prime tourist destinations for their natural beauty, stunning coastline, historical sites, or great nightlife. I just received news (another paid article I do yearly: to cover the summer festivals in Israel) that the Tsfat Music Fest, Eilat Jazz festival, Karmi’el Dance Festival are all cancelled due to the war and due to large crowds not being allowed. I am to be updated on the Tel Aviv White Nights, summer concert series in different locations, and other annual citywide extravaganzas. Add to that, our favorite summer haunts are shut down because – you know – the war.

Day 205 Hippuch

Let me introduce those of you who might not know to a new word in Hebrew. “Hippuch”, pronounced Hee POOKH’ with that guttural sound at the end, is a very common word here. It means flipped. Upside down in an ironic sort of way that you’d never expect. Like the ending of that movie, it was totally hippuch. It’s a great way to describe the world right now.

Good is evil. Evil is good. Genders are completely interchangeable at any given instant and if you don’t acknowledge how a person feels or labels itself, then you are the one with huge problems. What is legal for some is totally against the law for others if certain acts are committed. It’s all about freedom and tolerance unless, of course, you are the one that needs to be cancelled. A person has autonomy over their own body except when it’s mandated that a certain treatment must be given. My friends, we are living in a world of absolute hippuch.

It has been pretty evident by the past few weeks’ display on university campuses across the U.S. What started out as a “grassroots” movement has turned out to be incredibly well funded and incredibly well organized. Yes. I write of the pro-Palestine ceasefire/peace movement. They are all for peace except “Long live the Intifada.” Or as we say, “the infants.” To be clear, an intifada is an armed, Islamic movement that wishes to rid the world of infidels (Jews, Christians, LGBTQBiPOC+++, and other undesirables). As in eradication. Intifada is to bring the whole world under domination of Allah. A peaceful movement for sure.

These are not just young college kids involved in the resistance movement, but professors and outside organizers. These are the people that are fighting injustice and oppression of the Palestinians. Yet Hamas are the ones who have oppressed the people of Gaza (73% of Arabs living in the West Bank of Israel still support Hamas… that’s hippuch). We hear nothing of that.

The people that screamed “Believe ALL women” just two years back are the ones who demand proof, yet still deny rape, torture and sexual abuse of the Israeli women, men and children at the hands of Hamas and the Gazans. The demands that the Red Cross or Red Crescent be given access to the captured Hamas terrorists are the same people who have denied the captive Israelis humanitarian visits and delivery of/access to their lifesaving medicines.

“What do we want? Ceasefire! When do we want it? NOW!” Sounds nice. We all want an end to this horrible situation. Truly. Yet why did these same people at Columbia, NYU, Yale, Harvard and other schools cheer when Iran launched over 300 intercontinental ballistic missiles and suicide drones laden with explosives at Israel??? Total hippuch. Last week the chant was “Bomb, bomb Tel Aviv!”

A beautiful, young, Jewish university student- a senior now- who really has a soft heart for the underprivileged and the victim… someone who we are very, very close with…has recently joined up with the pro-Palestine resistance movement. She is now sending my husband and me regular messages, articles, posts about her most recent cause. The ultimate hippuch.

Even though she was raised in a Jewish home, I don’t believe she understands the definition of “Zionist.” She has informed us that as a Jew, she is not antiSemitic, but anti Zionist. She knows we live in Israel.

Zionism is the belief that the Jewish people have the right to live autonomously and sovereignly in their own ancestral and ancient homeland, Israel. That’s all. Nothing more. To colonize one’s own home, a home that as Mark Twain put it in his travel diary, The Innocents Abroad, in 1885, “…it was a vast wasteland. An uninhabitable wilderness of rock and bleak and barren landscape. Nary a tree or shrub for miles and no one except the occasional Bedouin seeking bakshish.” To colonize one’s own land, keeping the same language spoken for over 3000 years, the same religion, the old cities, is not the definition of colonization.

“An apartheid state” she writes continually. We’ve invited her several times to come see for herself. Take a Birthright tour. She would see a land where all citizens whether, brown, white, black or yellow; whether Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Jew or Baha’i are given the exact same rights and opportunities. Where the LGBT community has Pride ingparades and civil rights. Where true Democracy is happening.

Ms. M (she/her) attended an Interfaith Intersectional Passover Seder last week at the Liberated Zone on her campus. Instead of a commemoration of the Children of Israel’s exodus from slavery under Pharaoh in Egypt, it was a modern day representation of social injustice. The traditional Seder plate was replaced by a large hand-drawn-canvas plate. The evening/night event was held in the morning for brunch. Instead of unleavened matzah, there was a generic Middle Eastern pita and humus, which was ‘culturally appropriated by the Israelis from the Palestinians.’ The Muslims respected the Jews and it was a big loving peace fest. If only the real world was more like this-

She gave us a Podcast to listen to of her Columbia University compatriots. Three Jewish girls demanding the university divest from Israel in all ways: research, exchange programs, funding, products received that are Israeli manufactured. They speak eloquently of the love they have received from the Muslim students. The food shared. The peace movement. And how they have been kicked off campus, arrested, and their tents taken down They have no support- The podcast is called ‘On the Nose’ on open. Spotify and is sponsored by Jewish Currents.

I did my own sleuthing and what do you know? Hippuch! This grassroots movement was well in the planning for months by Jewish Voice for Peace, a radical leftist progressive Jewish organization funded by the Open Society and ultimately George Soros and Peter Beinart. Green and green and white two person tents were distributed by the thousands to campuses all across America over the past three weeks. Leaders were brought in to train the student organizers. Food has been delivered… halal and vegan, of course. Sound systems supplied. Posters and placards handed out. Chants taught. Ultimate hippuch? The podcasters are paid and the interviewees were given honorariums as well as relocation options after dorms were closed to them. The arrests lasted all of 3-5 hours for process and release/no bail/no charges.

The three girls on the podcast decried the fact that Conservative politicians were allowed onto their closed campus as a publicity and propaganda stunt. They said nothing about Ilhan Omar’s visit.

Even though it’s all about peace and tolerance, at Columbia, lead activist Khymani James, has called for the outright murder, eradication and killing of all Zionists “They should not have the right to live. They shouldn’t be allowed to exist.” At USC today, a Hamas supporter graffitied “Say no to genocide” in red paint onto the Tommy Trojan mascot. At UCLA, a journalist was denied entry into the enclave (university square) as it was a student- proclaimed media free zone. Protesting the ‘Open air prisons of Gaza’ the students locked arms, completely encircled the reporter, and refused movement to him unless he surrender his camera. Now that is the definition of hippuch.

To complain they are not being fairly treated by letting the students and professors have their encampments, yet when the Columbia U CEO locks Professor (Shai Davidai) out of the school and fires him is hippuch. To vandalaze the dorm rooms and doors of Jewish students on campuses (spray painting ‘Jew here’ ‘Jew go home’ Zionist sympathizer’ and swastikas and Stars of David). For the campus rabbis, chaplains and Jewish Student Organization heads to call up the students and tell them to leave campus and return to their homes for their own safety….isnt just hippuch anymore. It’s 1939 again. Germany. Nazi regime.Jewish kids are now afraid to live in their once- safe communities. Barred from classes. Barred from businesses.

The war here in Israel has been on delay for the past six weeks as hostage negotiations and US/UN/ICJ appeasements and deals are being made. The Biden administration is supporting the prosecution of Israeli officials for war crimes at the International Criminal Court, which means all of our top democratically elected officials here in Israel including Netanyahu, President Herzi, Defense Minister Gallant, Head of the IDF Herzi Halevi counts face potential extradition and areest (if they leave Israel).

The invasion of Rafah, the last Hamas stronghold is on hold. Awaiting a hostage deal. Awaiting Secretary of State Blinken to arrive in Israel Tuesday, his tenth visit since 7 October. Awaiting an appeasement- an ultimatum by the Biden admin: give up on Rafah and accept a peace deal with Saudi Arabia. Of course this is to cement Biden re-election. A probable Nobel Peace Prize for bringing peace to the Middle East. Hippuch.

Putting pressure on Israel like this, they know, is sure to topple our current administration. It’s by design. The White House wants Bibi gone. If the Rafah operation does not happen after scores of promises and assurances Hamas would be brought down in its entirety and the hostages liberated by force, if necessary, members of the IDF have stated they would personally take off their uniforms, take the government, and finish the war.

And the last example of hippuch: in a meeting between US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the military and Israel’s Secretary of Defense…the US is now expecting a “zero civilian casualty report” in any further stage of the war in Gaza against Hamas. It’s a war. There, unfortunately, will be casualties. It goes above and beyond upside down.
