War Stories: 6 Weeks 19 November, 2023

Thank you again to all my readers and all those who are emailing and calling to offer your support. It’s a tremendous source of strength for us. Seriously, we are doing so well.

Israel, who just two months ago was deeply divided politically and religiously, is now operating in complete unity. Two months ago it was stated that at least 35% of reservists would fail to show up for their service. Not only have 100% reported for duty and over 21,000 people, native Israelis and Lone Soldiers, have returned from over seas to defend their country. That is incredible.

In the past, the secular Jews here have greatly resented the ultra religious Jews for not enlisting in the army citing religious principles. The Jewish people who are observant have shown tremendous dislike for those who violate the Sabbath: those who do not take their religious obligations seriously. Now, even the Haredim, the ultra-Orthodox men, have enlisted into the IDF by the thousands. Those who have not enlisted are serving by making and delivering meals, working to assist paramedics, working as drivers and substitutes for those called up to a front line.

Secular Jews are requesting kippot (yarmulkes or head coverings), talit kattan (undershirts with fringes attached to the corners) and t’fillin (strapped-on prayer boxes) to wear during morning prayers. Shabbat liturgies are being celebrated inside tanks and shofar are blown before battle. Each battalion has requested a Torah scroll. Women are lighting Shabbat candles and separating challah. And Bible studies and prayer groups have sprung up throughout the country, observant and secular together, in support of the troops. This has not happened like this in almost 2,500 years, since the time of the Maccabees.

Many of you written that with all the news that you are getting (US, Canada, Scotland, England, Australia and Italy) that you don’t even know what to think or how to pray. You are hearing that the IDF is indiscriminately leveling homes, bombing hospitals and disproportionately killing civilians.

The new from BBC, Al Jazeera and the mainstream media, televised and print, is heavily controlled by and must have approval of Hamas before it goes out. It is now a well-established fact that mainstream media photojournalists were embedded deeply within the terrorist lines during the massacres of 7 October.

From ‘All Israel News” & “Honest Reporting “

Eslaiah, a freelancer who also works for CNN, crossed into Israel, took photos of a burning Israeli tank, and then captured infiltrators entering Kibbutz Kfar Aza….[P]hotos he took in Kfar Aza show Hamas terrorists trying to breach the Kibbutz’s fence and a burning house inside the community.”

As for the propaganda that Israel indiscriminately is killing innocent Palestinians: first of all, many of the Hamas & Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) terrorists have now chosen to dress in civilian clothing rather than army uniforms. When they are killed or wounded and photographed, it appears the IDF is targeting civilians. Also, as has been reported many times over, Hamas uses children and the poor as human shields. Because the IDF will stop their fire if they see children or women, Hamas will surround themselves with these people so as not to get hit by enemy fire. All children in the photo below have arms extended to show they are unarmed. This use of children is another war crime.

Regarding the disproportional response by the IDF and their specific leveling of hospitals and homes, the IDF is trying their best to do surgical strikes on terrorist targets from information procured by both intelligence (satellites, maps of tunnels retrieved from terrorists, and interviews of captured Hamas/PIJ operatives) and actual on-the-ground reconnaissance. Civilians have been ordered to be evacuated (see previous posts on military operations) before the quarter is entered for military strikes. Unfortunately, Hamas, the PIJ and other terrorist groups do not play by the International Laws of Legal Warfare. Their headquarters and arms are placed in residential areas. This is another war crime. Yet the world says nothing.

According to a battalion commander in Gaza (IDF Hamal news), his unit (Paratroopers 101 division) is involved in clearing ops. All standing structures are thoroughly searched room by room for any evidence of Hamas activity. “Irrespective of the size of the building, his unit always discovers weapons and military equipment. The average number of apartments found with such items ranges from one to three, depending on the size of the building. The rank of the fighter residing in the apartment is often correlated with the level of luxury within the building itself. Weapons such as RPGs, anti-tank missiles, grenades, kalechnikovs, uniforms, grab bags and documents are found in such areas as children’s rooms (under bed trundles, armoires), kitchens (drawers, cabinets, storage trunks) and laundry rooms, none of which are locked storage areas as these are residential spaces with children around.” -Jonathan Konricus, Senior Military Spokesperson. Also from Livi Weiss:

Concerning the Shifa Medical Center Complex, only certain buildings have been surrounded and entered based on the precise information provided by Hamas operatives. If you haven’t already seen everything found in the Imaging Center, watch this video. It’s incredible to say the least:

This is absolutely incontrovertible evidence. In addition two bodies of hostages were discovered on the premises of Shifa hospital: one a 22 year old student from Tanzania who was also working as an agricultural hand at the time of his abduction from Kibbutz Nahal Oz:

The second, the body of a 65 year old woman, Yehudit Weiss, being treated for breast cancer, was found on the property of the hospital complex. Her husband, Shmulik, was murdered in front of her eyes in the safe room of their home before her kidnapping from Kibbutz Be’eri. The IDF said she was recovered by troops from the 7th Armored Brigade’s 603rd Battalion. Found in the same building were military equipment, including Kaleshnikov rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.

There have been verifiable reports that a Thai woman, a domestic worker, kidnapped on 7 October to Gaza, has given birth. No word of how she or her baby are faring. Sara Netanyahu wrote letters to Jill Biden and other First Ladies of the world to plead with them to advocate for the release of these two non-Israeli, non-Jewish hostages.

People have asked me how to best pray. We pray for the protection and safe release of all the hostages. Little Ohad Munder just ‘celebrated’ his 9th birthday in captivity yesterday.

We pray for the IDF to continue to route out all the terrorists as quickly and easily as possible. For the protection of our soldiers. For the protection of innocent Palestinian civilians.

To sum up, using patients as human shields, using underground tunnels to create space to store weapons and for terror bases as well as to keep hostages are all war crimes. Stealing fuel from a hospital to run a military is a war crime. Israel is doing as best a job it can to not endanger lives of patients as it blocks off the hospital part by part. The South of Shifa, the outpatient clinics, have been sealed off by cement so terrorists cannot escape. Hopefully, at least some of the captives will be rescued.

In the meantime, the press continues to push for a ceasefire and the Biden administration, namely Secretary of State Blinken, continues to demand a pause so humanitarian aid can be given to the Gazans. As I have repeatedly reported in previous posts, Israel is now daily letting in upwards of 100 trucks filled with aid (tents, food, water, formula, diapers, hygiene products, necessities and blankets) at the Rafat and Kerem Shalom border crossings. Yet this is not being reported.

Few people today have had to directly confront or deal with the brutality and atrocities that Israel has had to endure. Many people talk of the refugee crisis and innocent civilians of Gaza. Over 11,000 – let that number sink in – missiles have been fired into Israel from 3 fronts since the inception of the war. Homes, schools and property has been destroyed. People have been killed and wounded. Ichilov Hospital has incurred direct hits 4 times causing major damage. Where is the outrage? Soroka hospital has been hit. Crickets. Tens of thousands of Israeli families have been displaced from the Gaza and the Northern borders. What is not proportionate is the reporting.

How does one deal with a murderous movement that wants to commit genocide in the name of Allah? Their intentions are clear: first eliminate the people of Israel from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. Then move on to the Western World to claim it for Islam through Jihad. In the United States, the Great Satan and then Europe. I do not have an answer. Right now Israel is trying to keep Hamas and the PIJ from being a threat to Israel and the world by dismantling its military system.

Now is the time to stand up against any form of antisemitism you might encounter. Stand up for ANY wrong, any evil, any untruth, any injustice – no matter where, no matter how small. Firmly but peaceably counter lies, falsehood with truth no matter what it is. Teach your children and grandchildren true history, true moral and ethical principles if they are not hearing it. Stand up against cancel culture. Stand up for freedom of speech. Take a stand against violence at the local level, from your local leaders and educators. Vote. Call your representatives. Fund charitable organizations that fight for good. Gently yet firmly educate others with facts. Above all, be charitable yourselves and walk in LOVE and kindness.

I pray for a more peaceful tomorrow-

War Update Day 42: 17 November

The Faces

Short on time today so just giving you faces and stories for a more personal and up close look at the beautiful and the heartbreaking-

This is an Israeli Air Force pilot. When he was informed his wife was in the delivery room with their first baby, Captain A. was given a 24 hour leave. He welcomes his new baby girl into the world.

Oren Weiss׳ parents were murdered by Hamas terrorists on Kibbutz Be’eri on the 7th of October. He married his fiancé, Mirit 3 days later. “We thought to postpone the wedding, but with all the madness in this world, we knew our parents would have wanted this. So life must go on. Love must triumph.”

The story of two brothers, both heroes. Separately when they heard the news of the invasion into Israel by the Hamas terrorists, grabbed their gear, headed South and jumped into action. Noam & Yishai Slotki, husbands and fathers of young children, fought off dozens of armed terrorists that day, rescuing and giving aid to scores of people caught up in the crossfire. They both gave their lives in fierce firefight near Kibutz Alumim.

Master Sgt in reserves, Eliyahou Benyamin Elmakayes, from France, was set to be married to his beautiful fiancé, Yoanna on 5 November. He postponed the wedding until his returned, but tragically was killed in Gaza in the line of duty.

This is a heartbreaking story with a surprising ending. Bruna emigrated to Southern Israel with her younger brother and her mother. They had only been in the country for two short months and knew relatively no one yet. Bruna was shot as she tried to flee the nightmare of a peace concert. Her mother asked a couple neighbors if they could possibly get together a minion of ten men so the Jewish funeral could take place that night.

The neighbor put out a post on Facebook and on WhatsApp. She spoke with the rabbi who also posted the request. When the Valenus showed up four hours later, they were shocked as there were over 20,000 people to share in the grief. Young people and old, religious and secular- they all turned up. Because in Israel we are all family.

This is beautiful Luna. Luna had a brother. He was shot defending the family. She had a home. Children who loved her. Luna loved to swim in the cold rivers up North. She loved to hike. She loved to play in the fields of wildflowers near the kibbutz. On October 7 she was taken from her home and placed in the back of a white pick-up. Last seen in a photo from Gaza chained to a metal fence. It’s not only people. Free Luna from Hamas.

Nine year old Tamar Chaya Torpiashvili repeatedly had to run to the community bomb shelter outside their apartment. She ducked, covered and dodged shrapnel falling to the street. Finally, her little body could handle the stress no longer. When the red alert sounded again, Tamar died of a heart attack last week as she was rushing to the shelter in Ashdod.

Gili & Shia had plans to marry but then the war broke out and they were both called up as reservists. To different bases. No matter. The army arranged for a rendezvous. A 48 hour leave and an impromptu wedding. Family was allowed on base. Sumptuous food was provided gratis by one of Tel Aviv’s master chefs. An Israeli music sensation even showed up to provide added joy for the newlyweds.

This amazing soul is Chaim ben Aryeh. In Hebrew Aryeh means Lion of G-d. Chaim, a school bus driver, took his service van and rescued several bus loads of young children, many very wounded, from Kibbutz Be’eri the morning of the horrific massacre. He was exposed to the most shocking atrocities. His soul could take it no longer and he committed suicide ten days ago. May his memory forever be a blessing. To us he is a hero.

Nirel Zini planned on proposing to his sweet Neev that day. He had bought the ring. It was Simchat Torah, the day of great rejoicing. What better way than declaring his love and declaring his intent. The families were all gathered for the special moment. Nirel and Neev were brutally murdered by the Hamas terrorists that day….

This guy just couldn’t be any cooler. Dashing Gil, made Aliyah to Israel at age 18 from Russia by himself. Despite suffering from severe lung problems, he insisted upon serving in the IDF armored brigade. He was serving in reserves in Gaza. When his unit needed someone to go out to get equipment, Gil volunteered. He told his mates, “You all have wives and kids. I’ll go.” He was killed by a ‘civilian teenage sniper’ almost immediately. He, too, is a hero.

Shabbat comes early these daze, so I leave you with some joyful reunions. Our soldiers are finally getting leave, some after being gone more than a month. A peaceful and quiet Shabbat to all-

War Stories Day 41 16 Nov, 2023. Daily Life

Many of you have asked about our lives here and if we are okay. We are trying to live as ‘normally’ as we can in this world, despite the constant balagan, disruption and sheer craziness in every way, that surrounds us.

Personally, John is still fighting an internal infection as he has been for 8 months now. He had major intestinal surgery in January, and we absolutely thank and praise G-d that there remains no cancer, the wound still has not closed completely. Dressings are still changed twice a day. He has no fever, no pain, no spread of infection. So we continue-

Five weeks ago I was diagnosed with four large kidney stones. My one kidney is very enlarged and a stent has been put in. I am scheduled for numerous tests at the beginning of December and then will proceed with surgery. Added to this, my lower back and extreme sciatica is a problem, so I do as much as I can do for the day, then continue with my writing for various outlets when my body yells “stop!”

Thank goodness that we here in our little corner of the mostly peaceful Galilee are tucked away from any shelling or missiles. I have seen four iron dome interceptions. We can occasionally hear the booms of anti tank missiles and bombs. A couple of times the house shook. Drones are constantly humming overhead and we hear the IDF jets, (dear earthly angels) strafing the sky regularly. It’s not completely normal, but we are going along with our new lives.

I tend the affairs of the house and work in our rooftop garden. The green beans, tomatoes, chard and winter lettuces are at their peak. I have won my war with the terrorist aphids and will harvest my beautiful broccoli raab tomorrow. I have four glorious yellow beets which we will enjoy for Thanksgiving next week.

Venturing out of the house, you would hardly know anything is different. People are shopping, schools in our city are open, and people are out and about. Still, at all the entrances to the city there are armed checkpoints. There are armed guards at all the shopping areas and stores and bags and people are inspected before entrance. All public bomb shelters are marked and open. It gives one a sense of security.

Yet, the war is always before us. Two local soldiers have been killed in Gaza. One at the beginning of the war and one young man, Shahar Cohen, fell two days ago. The funeral was yesterday and hundreds of people showed up.

Driving locally we see banners of those who were kidnapped to Gaza on the morning of October 7. Some were at the concert for peace, others include whole families who were abducted from their homes. Young and old. All with stories. With relatives from the area. With friends and university classmates. The couple that just got married two weeks previously. The grandparents in their 80s. A woman who survived the horrors of Auschwitz. The 8 month’s pregnant woman. It’s heartbreaking. The signs for the hostages are everywhere. None are ever taken down. They are all collectively our sons and daughters, our parents, our friends. The war is constantly in front of us. We are all affected.

There is so much respect for these signs and banners. One very elderly gentleman can be seen every morning in one of the town squares going before each photograph. He touches each picture and puts his hands to his lips. Over and over. It really makes you cry….

Twice a week we make food to be delivered to the soldiers in the Northern border fields. Because there are so many reservists scattered throughout the forests, mountains and fields, they can’t all go to the base, so the food comes to them. In the morning the army comes around with delicious chavitah (kha-vee-TAH) sandwiches…flat herbed omelets with sides of chopped Israeli salad, cucumber and tomato, and yogurt cups and fruit.

Roving grillmasters, volunteers and pop-ups appear in the afternoon, making burgers and grilled meats to serve to the troops free of charge. People send pizza deliveries also – as close to the soldiers as the delivery guys can get. I make pasta salad chock full of roasted or fresh veggies with added beans for protein- olive oil, vinegar and oregano. I also do a chopped fresh fruit salad. And a mixed garden salad. And miniature pumpkin breads or zucchini breads. All are standard American fare. We do 20-24 shareable quart containers at a time, label them and bring them to the food depot. So much food!!!!! So many soldiers who will never go hungry.

Waiting to be labeled

When we homeschooled, we learned how armies of the past often took their womenfolk with them to do the cooking and the laundry. There are people up here who take in loads of wash so the troops can have something clean. It’s amazing how generous people are with their time and talents here, but we know it’s all for the brave guys and girls putting their lives on the line to defend us…. Just a few miles away.

We’re seeing a lot more people “packing heat” these days. In the United States, I don’t believe anyone thinks of an unconcealed carry law… especially like ours. But in Israel one must go through an application process to establish need and stable background; then a battery of training before an arm can be purchased. Also, the Ten Commandments of the purity of arms must strictly be adhered to- not using a weapon to threaten or force. It must be in self defense only – or in defending someone else… I really feel safe when I see there are those out there who will be able to protect me in the small chance of attack.

The gentleman staying with us goes out in the early mornings to pick fruit and veg and to help at the local farms. Yesterday he was literally right up on the Lebanese border. There was a community that was evacuated, but their main income is from egg production. Marc went up with an armed security group to feed the chickens, clean the coops and collect eggs. He heard exchanges of gunfire between Hizbulla and the IDF all morning. He thought it was eggs-citing (haha) with lots of stories to tell when he returns to the States in a couple weeks.

🥚 🐓 A game of chicken?? 🐓 🥚

For perspective, the bottom white structures are the coops on the Israeli kibbutz. The structures at the top are in Lebanon. Many of the families who lived in those homes have fled or were kicked out by Hizbulla. They are now being used by the Iranian backed army to shoot down at Israeli civilians.

Some are fearless, like Marc, adventure seekers. Others are more hesitant. We mark our steps cognizant of our surroundings. Ultra aware. High alert. One friend always on the lookout for a place to duck and cover near a wall, inside a building, in a ditch beside the road…just in case. Another friend who lives further South where you never know when a siren will go off, tries to plan out her bathroom and shower schedule. Seriously, how to run to a community shelter in the basement of her apartment when you are most indisposed? Showers are now brief luxuries. It’s a different lifestyle, but people can be very adaptable, at least for the short term.

Most people in Israel live in apartments. Space is a premium. Those apartments with bomb shelters, mamads, are often doubly used as bedrooms. Many a family have moved their children into the safe room so the kids won’t have to make a shelter run at night. More often than not, the parents sleep there too, now. It’s a bit for convenience, but mostly to reassure frightened children that everything will be okay. And more often than not, daddy has gone off to war, so it becomes a nest of safety for all of them. I can’t even imagine-

Mostly we walk around in confusion. Why? The answers will come later. Do we cry? If we cry now we might never stop. We are strong. We are resilient. We are anxious. We are nervous. Our neighbors have 3 sons. All are serving in the army. Cigarette sales are at an all-time high. So is ice cream. We can’t eat. We binge eat. We sleep fitfully, images of that Shabbat shachor, that Black Sabbath play like movies on a continuous loop under our eyelids. We are hopeful. We are prayerful. We lift our voices heavenward. Who else can we trust? We go to funerals. And weddings. Those glorious weddings!!! We dance. We sing. We live. We are Israel.

As I have just finished this post, another one came in. We have another funeral tomorrow. Please make it stop soon-

War Stories 14,15 November, 2023

!!!WARNING: SENSITIVE MATERIAL!!!

As seems to be more usual than not lately, the blogpost I am about to write is not the one I had intended for today. I really wanted to write about daily life under the threat of war, on some of the ordinary people who are stepping up to do extraordinary work and on comforting activities and comfort foods.

Over the past two days I’ve received word of good-hearted people who are living in the United States and the UK who want to help out somehow. No one likes to see the suffering of children. No one with a true heart for humanity wants to see innocents in harm’s way or being mistreated. Whether Jew or Christian, we all want a more peaceful world. Some of the charities mentioned sound reputable on the surface or were reputable at one time, but are now corrupt. By the end of this post, I will have provided places to give where your donations will be put to direct use for excellent causes.

There have been some facts that are not being reported or being misstated in your media that I would like to point out regarding charitable aid. Israel currently has roughly 243 hostages being held in Gaza. Israel has pleaded with the Red Cross to go in to do inspections regarding the state of the hostages: how many are alive? what is their condition? what are their needs? Both Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders have not been willing to step in.

Yesterday morning, an IDF soldier, Corporal Noa Marciano, 19, was declared dead.. Hamas sent her parents brutal photos of her badly beaten body claiming it was the work of Israeli brutality. The terrorists used Noa’s cell phone and her Facebook page to transmit the news. It was confirmed by the IDF, i24 News and Arutz 12 that she had been killed at the hands of Hamas. Can the Red Cross examine those taken captive? Why not? Why is Doctors Without Borders refusing to go into any of the areas? Why are they not checking the status of the Palestinian refugees coming from Northern Gaza?????

IDF Corp. Noa Marciano, kidnapped,killed

Within the past three days, evidence has been uncovered and there have been credible reports that a baby was born to one of the hostages. The mother was abducted at almost 33 weeks pregnancy. The mother has been over 5 weeks in Gaza. In what conditions are she and the baby being held? We need concrete information. Why does Red Cross or UN Women and Children’s Rights Organization refuse to come to the aid of Israeli women and children? At least 100 children have been taken from their homes. Why is their no humanitarian assistance? Or even outrage??

So far Israel has allowed humanitarian aid in to Gaza for the refugees through the Egyptian border. This is the third week of nonstop deliveries. Gaza receives one of the highest levels of financial aid in the world. Aid to Gaza has reached over $40 billion since 1994. Gaza should look like Dubai. Instead 86% of its residents live in abject poverty while the leaders of Hamas are living luxuriously in Qatar mansions.

Footage was recovered yesterday of Hamas operatives, scores of armed young men, swarming an aid truck. They were filmed pushing innocent civilians to the side as they grabbed boxes and sacks and carried them off. This is unjust. This is stealing from the poor. This is evil.

There is an organization called COGAT, Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories. It is a noncombatant IDF unit that actually works very closely with the Palestinian Authorities (West Bank) to coordinate humanitarian aid, civilian issues, diplomatic efforts, international relief, economy and infrastructure. COGAT works in tandem with the UN in both the West Bank and also in Gaza. They have been directly responsible for delivering humanitarian relief to the civilians of Gaza and to Shifa Medical Center. They coordinated efforts to provide the hospital with incubators to transport premature babies and infants in distress.

Israel has allowed in tents and tent city set up; porta-potties and sanitation items, food, medical supplies, water and fuel for the hospitals. Much is donated generously by other countries. It comes in through Egypt and through Israel checkposts. Much of it is stolen after it enters Gaza. Much is thrown out, completely unopened. The IDF found in Northern Gaza just outside Gaza City, sacks of grain, a gift from Japan, that were thrown into a pit, unused except to cover up a hostage that was dead. The IDF discovered this in N Gaza yesterday. It was not disclosed how the hostage died. The world will not tell you this.

The Red highlights:for distribution to Palestine refugees. Japan.

As previously stated in other posts, Israel has directly helped the people of Gaza in many ways. More than 20,000 Palestinians have been allowed to enter into Israel each year to receive lifesaving treatment at Israeli hospitals free of charge to them. This has even included treating and curing a brain tumor in Yahya Sinwar, chief mastermind of the 7 October invasion and head of Hamas.

17,000 jobs were given to Palestinians in the past year in the Israeli construction, household, factory and agricultural sectors. 120 megawatts of electricity are provided by Israel to Gaza. They have not paid their power bills for over 6 years. 640 tons of cement; 50 truckloads of aggregates; 10 trucks of iron have been allowed into Gaza for construction of homes and infrastructure. These are part of the EU’s humanitarian assistance package. Mostly, this material has gone into the “Metro” project- over 500 miles of underground tunnel networks running the length and breadth of Gaza. One mile of terror tunnel amounts to approximately $160 worth of food for 800 families.

There are many nonprofit agencies that are promoting peace and unity between Palestinians and Israelis. Some of these include Musalaha Ministry of Reconciliation; Shevet Achim; Women Make Peace. Just yesterday morning it was announced that Vivian Silver, a Canadian Israeli living in Kibbutz Be’eri, founder of Women Make Peace, was among those whose bodies were identified as being massacred by Hamas on 7 October. “She was a woman of compassion and humanity with and endless, continuous and deep commitment who dedicated her life to justice and harmony and peace between Jews and Arabs.” (Anat Sargosti, friend) “She lived to build bridges of peace. Yes peace.” Vivian worked tirelessly to advance Palestinian rights and promote dialogue between the people of Gaza and Israel. Her mutilated body was just identified by dental records and DNA extraction.

Each year there are summer camps held in Israel which take in impoverished Palestinian children and children of international workers here. The children are well cared for, given play clothes, they eat nourishing meals and take part in wholesome, age-appropriate activities. They are children of East Jerusalem Palestinians as well as children of Philippine, Eritrean, Indian and Sudanese single parents or poverty stricken families. Some are children whose mothers are victims of domestic violence. Most parents are special visa international day-workers. My son volunteered as a counselor for one of these Israeli children’s camps in 2015 & 2016.

Children’s summer day camp, Ein Kerem, 2015,2016

In Gaza and parts of the West Bank, Palestinian children attend military training camps. In the UNRWA funded schools, children are taught from kindergarten through graduation Palestinian propaganda and how to wage jihad and become a shahid. The children are taught that the Jew is vermin that must be extinguished. That all Israelis want to kill them. That Jews are colonizers, that all will grow up to be soldiers and must be eliminated early on. This is child abuse. The videos were filmed 8 years ago and originally aired on Memri TV. Today these children are Hamas fighters.

Both of these videos were from 8 years ago- originally aired on Memri TV

US and EU money given to the UN for humanitarian aid goes to enrich the coffers of Hamas leaders and to fund their war effort. The United Nations has thus far refused any investigation into war crimes committed by Hamas and PIJ. They will not speak to women survivors or victims, eyewitnesses to the horror. Both the UN and the Red Cross have flatly refused to get involved or mediate. Charitable donations, unfortunately, rarely reach their intended party or are used for true humanitarian purposes.

Several people have reached out asking where they can send a donation that will directly reached certain affected parties. I am NOT in a position to collect and distribute funds directly at this time. Charitable groups we support and those I believe are truly honest and need help are:

  • ISRAEL 365 I have followed Rabbi Tuly Weiss for 12 years. An American-Israeli, Rabbi Tuly has set up not only a beautiful daily short email on the news of Israel, but a network of Christian and Jewish people who directly meet the needs of those in need. Rabbi has set up streams of charitable giving where 100% of your funding goes directly to the targeted cause. He has supported families of terror victims; those most affected by war or natural disaster; and women and children most in need. His organization has provided shelter, reconstruction projects to adapt homes for the disabled food and clothing to the poverty stricken. He is now directly involved in providing aid to the tens of thousands of displaced families due to the current war. Whether it’s a daily news blip; ways to stand in solidarity with the people of Israel through lighting candles; buying products to support entrepreneurs and small businesses or through direct donation, please go to Israel365news.com

  • MEIR PANIM. This is an organization that has soup kitchens/free restaurants and that delivers door-to-door hot, nutritious meals once a day to elderly, Holocaust survivors; impoverished and displaced persons. The need at present is great. American Friends of Meir Panim is a registered 501(c). (3) non-profit organization, registered under EIN Number 20-1582478. Email: info@meirpanim.org. Address: 88 Walton Street Suite B1, Brooklyn, New York 11206
  • ISRAEL TRAUMA COALITION This organization provides emergency relief for people and communities suffering from PTSD. The current was has many casualties not just physical (buildings and bodies) but psychological. People being forced to run for shelter whenever a siren sounds, whenever there is a loud noise. Children who have lost whole family members need so much help. There are tens of thousands displaced either temporarily or permanently. The winter is coming and people are in need of warm clothing. Hungry in need of food. This non-profit organization provides direct help. Israeltraumacoalition.org
  • For those who have asked how to provide for innocent Palestinians especially children- I have called many sources. The best answer I’ve gotten is to call or connect with the Jordanian or Egyptian consulates regarding humanitarian aid at the Rafat Crossing. Sorry, I’ve been trying for 3 days- this is the best I could come up with.
  • My husband and I are contributing to the Ittai Project. The Jewish communities in Judaea and Samaria are largely the forgotten ones in this war. Many of the men have gone to serve in reserves leaving farmland uncared for and under threat of destruction by their Palestinian neighbors. The women are left alone, often to take up the family business and to care for their small children. They are continually being shot at and threatened by the Palestinian Islamists who surround them. Project Ittai is on a mission to bring protective gear and night vision goggles to the men patrolling these towns as well as farm and agricultural equipment and help. There are also opportunities to come to Israel and serve directly. This is a joint Jewish and Christian group we wholeheartedly support. Serveisrael.com
  • Mamale his a grassroots movement that started three weeks ago. It matches up young mothers who provide catering services as a source of income with families whose father is off in reserves with a multi-course, highly nutritious catered meal. These beautifully packaged meals provide much needed support to army wives who have not had their husbands/fathers home in weeks because they are at the front. Each meal includes handwritten notes of support and encouragement to these women. It’s a real blessing to the families. If you want to support them, let me know and I will provide you with a direct link to the two organizers.

May we have only good news the rest of the week-

RECENT UPDATE: BREAKING NEWS

A report to British authorities alleges that the Gaza manager for Global Relief Trust is a Hamas official; was on the ground at the Al Ahli Hospital incident

War Stories:Military Update 12 November,2023

As of today, the situation throughout Israel is volatile. Engagements are constantly shifting. I will report on the four main areas of military concentration based on direct information from IDF sources, FIDF, Zaka relief and support services and Israeli sources. Information coming out of Gaza and Lebanon are mostly Hamas propaganda unless they are direct quotes from military officials.

I am not sure how much of the truth is being reported by Western media outlets. Much of what I am reading and hearing has a Hamas, Palestinian bias. Reports from Hamas Health Authority, Hamas Operations or Hamas Aid Society are not reliable. There is no way to tell the number of casualties at this point, but their numbers seem to be drastically inflated.

Gaza Update

The IDF has escalated ground efforts, pushing deeper into Northern Gaza. The ground forces are working in unison with the Air Force and navy targeting Hamas terror positions only. These include observation sites, anti-tank missile operations systems, and rocket launching sites.

The soldiers are still under rocket fire. Missile barrages, although more infrequent, are being launched into central Israel day and night. Friday afternoon before the Sabbath began, the greater Tel Aviv area was bombarded. There were damages to buildings and cars, but no civilian casualties. Iron Dome intercepted most of the missiles.

15:22 red alerts on my iPhone 10 November

Israel encircled the area surrounding Gaza City, clearing out the terror strongholds in Jabalya as well. The IDF moved ground forces into Gaza City, going house by house using urban warfare tactics. They have seized over 9,000 war items – missiles, RPGs, mortars, guns, explosives and chemicals used in making ammunition. Weapons manufacturing facilities were uncovered within actual schools, in rooms adjacent to classrooms. A missile launch pad and storage facility was housed in the Scouting building. Tunnel entrances near an amusement park have been sealed. Several weapons manufacturing sites have been discovered within actual residential buildings directly adjacent to bedrooms. These all constitute War Crimes, using civilians and children as shields.

Over 15,000 targets have been struck with surgical precision, including operations command centers and weapons and logistics depots. Top Hamas commanders and operatives, those responsible for the planning and campaign the 7 October invasion into Israel and massacre, have been eliminated. Top snipers, weapons coordinators and military personnel have been eliminated,

There has been heavy gunfire reported with anti-tank missiles fired at IDF forces by Hamas operatives. The Israeli navy captured shipping containers on a Northern Gaza beach containing 20 missile launchers.

To date, 1.5 million leaflets have been dropped instructing civilians of the imminent risk as ground and air forces move in on certain neighborhoods of Gaza City. This is to warn innocent civilians to clear the area before troops advance. 20,000 direct phone calls have been made. 4.5 million text messages have been sent in Arabic and in English. 6 million pre-recorded calls were made to warn civilians of impending danger.

Evacuation corridors have been established by the IDF- the two main routes are currently along the Gaza Beach and the Salah-Al-din Road. Evacuees are to hold their hands up and carry white flags. Tanks and snipers are along the routes as Hamas is trying to prevent civilians from leaving. Recorded calls have been published of Gazans whose keys have been confiscated or by Gazans reporting Hamas terrorists shooting at them and attempting to block escape passages. These are confirmed by published IDF satellite imagery.

Windows of movement have been issued by the ZiDF. So far, 50,000 civilians passed to S Gaza on Thursday from 09:00-13:00 and an additional 50,000 on Friday. Yet the Hamas terrorists prevent many from leaving. Most Americans and Italians are out.

In Southern Gaza City, Nasser and Rantisi Hospitals are being evacuated. This extraction is being carefully coordinated by IDF COGAT units which is closely monitoring all developments. Recorded phone calls in Arabic between the IDF and the hospital directors give clear instructions on evacuation procedures and accompaniment to safety in Southern Gaza following Salah-a-Din Road.

There is false information that is circulating through Western news agencies that the Shifa Medical Center complex is under siege by Israeli forces. This is unequivocally untrue. Shifa doctors, many trained at Israeli hospitals such as Beilensen and Ichilov, are refusing to evacuate. The medical center is a large, modern complex comprised of many buildings. These serve as command and control centers for the Hamas Nakhba terrorists. Many exit and entrance tunnels to the vast underground “Metro” network are underneath the hospital.

International law allows the bombing of any institution, including hospitals, that house enemy operations. The IDF has been in close communication with many of the staff to evacuate all innocents. It remains a very complex, very volatile situation, changing all the time.

Both the IDF Spokesperson, Col Daniel Hagari (in English) and the Head of Coordination and Liason, administration coordinator to Gaza under COGAT, Col. M. Tetro (in Arabic) stated in a televised speech: “ There is no siege on Shifa Hospital. The east side of the hospital is open on Al-Wadi St. to Salah-Al-Din for the safe passage of any Gazan who wish to leave the hospital. We are speaking directly and regularly to hospital staff. We especially requested to help babies and patients on the pediatric unit to get to a safer hospital and we will provide assistance in any way necessary. I call to your attention that it has been 37 days since Hamas has captured our babies. We know not where they are, if they are alive, or what condition they are in.”

Eilat on the Red Sea

Eilat is the southernmost city in Israel. It has a population of almost 53,000. This upscale resort city has an international airport and is currently offering temporary housing to over 1200 displaced families from Central Israel.

In the past week Houthi Rebels from Yemen, an Iran-backed terror organization has launched several long range missiles from Yemen. Two were intercepted by the US. The Americans stated that they downed a UAV MQ9 Reaper drone carrying out hostile surveillance and espionage activities. Two US carrier strike groups are situated in international waters off the coast of Saudi Arabia.

In a first, on October 31, Israel’s Arrow 2 air defense system successfully intercepted its target over the Red Sea, a long range surface-to-air missile fired from Yemen. It was the first interception of a missile outside the earth’s atmosphere. In addition, a Cruise Missile was intercepted by IDF F-35 fighter jets.

A UAV from Syria flew the length of Jordan to Eilat on Friday afternoon before crashing into a middle school. According to the London-based Syrian Observation for Human Rights, the IAF struck military sites of an Iranian proxy terrorist Hizbulla cell near Damascus killing 3 terrorists in response to the attack.

West Bank (Judaea & Samaria)

The Israel Defense Force is continuing to operate against any and all terror activity in the areas of the West Bank with almost 700 arrested since the start of the war. Over 100 of those detained have direct ties with Hamas.

There have been two diversions of civilian cars and shootings in the area last week. In the first incident a man was killed; in the second, a car was forced off the road. The mother and father were shot and are in serious condition at a Jerusalem hospital. Their 5 month old child in a rear car seat was unharmed. There were reports of 12 separate shooting incidents by snipers into villages in Samaria.

Demonstrations were held in Ramallah and Nablus(Sh’chem) Friday, the latter becoming violent. Rocks were hurled at IDF armored jeeps passing through Bethlehem. Jenin remains a hotbed of terror activity. The ‘Quiet War’ continues here as illegal weapons manufacturing and smuggling operations continue to be uncovered as well as frequent militant clashes with the Israeli army. I

will cover the West Bank at another time but I refer you to visit the sites of Pulse of Israel and The Israel Guys for the most up-to-date news on that area.

Hizbulla and the North

As the threat of escalation looms ever closer, I’ve been hearing the booms coming from the Northern front (Lebanese border) for the past three days. They are becoming more frequent and not an hour ago I received my red alerts of incoming (not in our immediate area) and went outside to see two beautiful Iron dome interceptions glowing golden red over the Mediterranean. Because they were so far away, the booms came about a minute later. Unfortunately I didn’t film it.

Last week the daily routine continued with Iranian backed Hizbulla firing short range and anti-tank missiles into Israel. 20 missiles were fired towards and into the Golan.

A Hizbulla drone exploded on an IDF base wounding 2 soldiers. It’s a worrying situation. On Friday, 3 unmanned aircraft invaded Israeli space and were shot down; one infiltrated quite a ways towards Haifa before it was taken out.

So far 5 IDF soldiers have been wounded by anti-tank missiles, 6 soldiers have died and 2 civilians. 71 Hizbulla terrorists have been eliminated.

This morning short range rockets from Lebanon (Hizbulla), struck two cars, on the road paralleling Dovev. Several cars were damaged by collateral damage and people were rushed to a nearby hospital.

Tehran appears to be creating operational support for Hizbulla in order to further an escalation. They have increased Shi’ite Militias in Syria and as backup in Lebanon. Thousands of the elite IRGC have now moved into the Syrian Golan.

There was another regional meeting of the Arab League this week after US Secretary of State Antony Blinken ended his quick trips to Israel and Baghdad. There were threats by several Arab leaders to continue 7 October type incursions into Israel and commit repeated massacres. “We will do it again. And again. And again.”

Things are beginning to get a little hotter here, but so far, on the Northern front the IDF has only responded proportionally with return fire so as not to escalate the war into another front.

In other news, US forces continued to get hit. American forces in Iraq & Syria were attacked by Iranian proxy drones at least 38 times over the past month. 46 US military personnel have been injured according to the Pentagon. US retaliation has killed 9 IRGC and struck munitions storage sites. The attacks continue almost daily with rockets fired and drones against US forces. The Americans have deployed ships in the Mediterranean armed with Patriot Defense Missiles Systems and fighter jet squadrons. Also, they have added hundreds of additional troops to the MidEast region.

In the meantime, Hamas has just released photos of two of the hostages, a 12 year old boy and an older woman. They would like to arrange a deal – 50 of the hostages for all Palestinians and Hamas operatives being held prisoner for committing terrorist attacks.

We continue praying for no escalation on other fronts and for as few casualties as possible. so far over 1400 Israelis have been killed, over 5300 wounded and 241 are still being held hostage. 39 Israeli soldiers have fallen in Gaza and 6 on the Lebanese border.

War Stories 10 November, 2023

It’s been a hard week for me on many levels. A man I knew was killed in my hometown by a computer science professor at the local community college. He is a Muslim man who taught one of my kids, so I was familiar with both people. One of my favorite rabbis, Michael Barclay, was there and witnessed the event. No charges have been pressed. The sheriff will be providing security to the mosque in Newbury Park (the synagogues already have their own security guards- a necessity for the past several years).

My son fell quite ill, so we rushed down towards Tel Aviv (OK, so this Jewish momma made 4 quarts of chicken soup with matzo balls for him) to take him to urgent care. On the way down I was shocked at the outpouring of patriotism. Israeli flags everywhere!!!

Despite the many hardships, there is no other place I’d rather be. People are coming up with so many ways to help the soldiers in innovative ways. Remember, over 360 reservists (dads, grandfathers, moms even) are serving. Over 100,000 expats returned in the first week just to serve in the army!

One company is taking washers, dryers and soap to the fronts so the soldiers can launder their uniforms. There are 6 mobile flatbed semis going to the different bases.

And a mobile army uniform and equipment repair motor coach is making the rounds to service the troops!

And if that wasn’t enough, a group of dads got together and bought inflatable jacuzzis and showers and set them up near the front so the guys could have fun while they clean off all that dust and grime!! Nothing like a little pampering from dad!

There have been so many miracles!! They are coming through regularly now. Last Friday, right before Shabbat, there was a massive barrage of rockets from Gaza into the greater Tel Aviv area. A home incurred a direct hit in Rishon l’Tsiyon. There was major damage to the entire house except for the kitchen and the dining room. The table was set for Shabbat and all the family was to welcome their two sons home on furlough after a month at war. Everything was left intact, and the family decided to celebrate Shabbat despite their major loss.

“Daddy! Wake up!!! I love you!!! Wake up, Daddy”…Yael Or, age 2 1/2. Major Or, who was critically injured and lay in a coma for 4 days miraculously woke up upon hearing a recording of his little daughter’s voice. During the battles within Gaza, Major Or’s APC was attacked by a Hamas anti-tank missile . For 4 1/2 days the medical team tried to wake him up, until they played him the recording of little Yael. He immediately regained consciousness and is expected to make a full recovery.

And now to celebrate several women heroines. After the massacre, when we were under attack and reservists were called up, the IDF was expecting maybe 60% to show up for duty. They had threatened to abandon duty in political protest over the government just weeks before. instead over 200% came… from all over the world.

Two of the reservists from within Israel were in their 8th month of pregnancy. Best friends, both worked in the control center and decided to spend their last month in service to their country.

Next is the story of Inbal Lieberman. Not only beautiful and smart, she’s strong and courageous. Inbal was installed as the first security commander for the Otef Gaza (Envelope) Regional Council. She’s only 24. When she heard the first missiles, and the WhatsApp texts of Kibbutz Nir Am residents on 7 October, Inbal jumped into action. Gathering together 8 other kibbutz members and going to the community armory, she handed out helmets, bulletproof vests, guns and ammunition to the guys. Then commanded them at checkpoints around the kibbutz. They bravely fought of terrorists and stood ground for 6 hours until the army came to the rescue. Not one resident of Nir Am was killed or abducted. Inbal is a true Israeli heroine.

There is Nadav, a mother of 10 children!! She serves in reserves…border patrol division. She is the nicest person, but don’t mess with Nadav. Like Inbal, she sensed something big was happening early that Shabbat morning. She grabbed her guns and ammo and ran towards Sderot and the site of the infiltration. She bravely shot many of the terrorists and helped many others to safety. Nadav fought for 9 hours, taking the guns off the bodies of the militants when she ran out of fire power. Another lioness of Israel!

This is LtCol or Ben Yehuda, commander of the all-women’s Caracal Brigade, an infantry unit. Under her direction, her troops successfully eliminated over 100 Hamas terrorists the morning of 7 October, saving countless lives. Heroism appears to be a family tradition, as her mother earned a military commendation 50 years ago for defending Israel in the Yom Kippur War.

Acts of kindness and generosity are rampant throughout Israel now. Here’s one from my friend, Julie:

My son’s new landlord refused his first month rent check because he was away for 3 1/2 weeks serving in reserves. He just would not accept Max’s payment. Only in Israel.

One more story of heroism for you-

Time is growing short. Shabbat comes early now, and I still must take a shower. Last week I made challah. I forgot to let the dough rise the second time and it was totally dense. This week I let the dough rise twice, but forgot to need it. Oh well, there’s always next week…

Here are guys celebrating Shabbat in a tank on the way to Gaza…. And the last is from our great friend Yardi- who knows how to take a break in style. Stay safe, Yardi and all our wonderful people defending our country. May we have a quiet Sabbath!!!

Love and War Stories. 9 November, 2023

The last couple days have been quite heavy. So today I thought I’d share this wonderful and uplifting story with you. It’s one of those ‘Only in Israel’ things and another reason I love this country so much. Enjoy!!!!

Proposals, weddings, births! Israel becomes more hopeful and Jewish ‘davka’ during wartime

Despite the tragic events of Oct. 7, Israelis deliberately choose to celebrate life

As the war today marks one full month of hostilities, Israel is experiencing an unprecedented surge of births, marriage proposals and weddings, despite the war looming over its society. Why is that? We can sum it up in one Aramaic word – davka. Originally meaning “precision” in Hebrew, we use this word to express something that is done in spite of, or specifically because of.

Hamas wants less Jews in Israel? We will davkacreate new families and make more babies.

Benny Maidan, 25, and Naomi Theodor, 20, had planned to get married in April or May of 2024, and this past September they were looking for a venue within their budget but were unable to find anything. And then the war broke out, Benny was called up to his reserve troop in the Golani Brigade, close to the Lebanese border.

“As the war started, we felt this urge that something wasn’t finished. We caught ourselves wishing we were already married, or that we had married earlier,” Naomi told ALL ISRAEL NEWS during a recent interview. “And then we heard news of couples getting married in their army bases, and thought it might be an option.”

Naomi is referring to something being seen in Israeli news media more and more: A couple whose wedding ceremony was canceled due to the war, and decided to get married on their military base instead.Wedding of Benny Maidan and Naomi Theodor (Photo: Shahar Cohen)

Already on Oct 17, just ten days after the war started, former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett shared on social media a photo of the couple Tamar and Adir, getting married in their uniforms and posted:

“Lately I find myself more and more urging young couples who have gone out for a long time to get married and have kids. I think I have already set up 4-5 weddings for injured people, or bereaved family members. Our victory against our enemies will not just be through the hell we will unleash on them in the battlefield, but also by starting new lives of the Jewish people here in the Land of Israel. With optimism, with building a new generation, with faith, and with growth from the horrible pain,” Bennett wrote.

“Here in the photo are Tamar and Adir, getting married in Kibbutz Urim in the south. You don’t need a fancy venue, a catering, or a band. Not even a wedding dress. You can get married in uniform, with a military rabbi, an army bottle of wine, and some chicken and rice from the military kitchen. There’s no people like the People of Israel – ‘In thy blood live.’”, which is a reference to Ezekiel 16:6.

Similarly, the Times of Israel reported on Oct. 28 about numerous weddings, davka, during this time. In some cases, it was a wedding ceremony that was scaled down but still took place on its planned date. In other cases, such as Benny and Naomi’s celebration, the wedding date was shifted to an earlier date than what was originally planned for because of the war. In some cases, the scaling down means that not all family and friends are able to attend. In other cases, the number of guests actually increases, as Israelis are volunteering in droves to be a part of the celebration and bring joy to the bride and groom.

These weddings frequently go viral on social media in a nation that is starving for good news and glimpses of hope.

Benny’s military comrades volunteered to arrange his wedding, Naomi told ALL ISRAEL NEWS. She was told that all she needed to do was to find a dress, arrange for the rings and show up.

“In my mind, I thought we would get married and they’ll hold a piece of bedsheet over our heads [for the chuppah], get married and go home. But then I saw how everyone was really giving their all into this and was happy to be part of it.”Wedding of Benny Maidan and Naomi Theodor (Photo: Shahar Cohen)

Naomi describes how the comrades arranged a professional chuppah, catering, a photographer, flowers, wedding cake, makeup and hair – everything for free.

The guys of the Golani Brigade met every evening to plan the wedding, with each one pitching to help via their connections and who would be available and wiling to volunteer their time and effort.

Naomi said the guys didn’t even let Benny in on all the plans.

“I was still concerned about the safety,” Naomi said, in reference to the frequent missile attacks being launched by the Hezbollah terror organization against military bases near the northern border.

Benny told her, “If something happens, we’ll go into a bomb shelter, and then hopefully come back and finish the wedding, and that we can’t let ourselves be overwhelmed by ‘what if’-scenarios.”

Another issue that could have potentially held things up was the legal procedure with the Israeli rabbinate, which can take up to at least three months in some cases.

With less than two weeks to plan the wedding, Naomi said, that issue was also resolved, as military rabbis at the army base were able to pull some strings for them.

“Two days before the wedding I was told, ‘The wedding is in two days, on October 26th.’ My family arranged a decorated car for me, I wore my dress and we went up north, and I had no idea what would happen,” Naomi said.  Except for the soldiers at the base, the only invited guests were the couple’s closest family members – their mothers and siblings.

Benny and Naomi are both fatherless, as Benny’s father was a Holocaust survivor who passed away from old age and Naomi’s father died from COVID two years ago at only 54 years old.

The couple first met each other while Naomi and her family were mourning her father’s death. The wedding would take place just a few days before the second anniversary of her father’s death, on what is referred to in Yiddish as the second Yahrzeit.

This is also something unique for Jews in Israel, to go from bereavement to joy overnight. This is reflected in the way we celebrate memorial day of our fallen soldiers – a holiday that is observed one day before we celebrate the Jewish state’s freedom and establishment – Independence Day – and is a deeply-rooted part of the Jewish experience.

“When I arrived, I was overwhelmed because everyone was wearing green, and they were all excited about me, shouting  ‘The bride has arrived!’ and you could really see the joy in their eyes,” Naomi continued.

“They took me to a room they had prepared for me, and this guy said, ‘Let’s do your hair.’ And then a lady came and did my makeup, and then there’s music, they’re getting flowers ready, and then I go outside and I see this huge really professional chuppah.”

“Someone came up and said, ‘Hi, I’m the videographer,’ and someone else says he’s the photographer. I had no idea I was going to have a videographer at my wedding. They took us around the place and took pictures of us. Then we had the ceremony under the chuppah, which was very emotional. And then the famous singer Shay Tzabari shows up and sings, and then we go dancing,” Naomi shared.

“The food was amazing.: Steaks, chicken pullets… I was in shock that they made this whole thing and everyone were so happy for us. And then we go dancing again, and the famous singer Idan Amedi, whose music I love, showed up and sang especially for us. It was so amazing and beautiful. A 40-year-old high-ranking officer was crying his eyes out during the ceremony.”Idan Amedi singing at Benny Maidan and Naomi Theodor’s wedding (Photo: Shahar Cohen)

The phenomenon of Israeli celebrities appearing for free at military weddings has become more  common in recent days, with many reportedly surprising the bride and groom by appearing and performing at weddings.

During one portion of Benny and Naomi’s wedding ceremony, loud gunfire could be heard as the Israel Defense Forces was shooting at Hezbollah target.

After the ceremony was finished, the couple was sent to a cabin for their wedding night – also for free.

“Everyone gave from their goodness from their heart. The providers of the services for the wedding came from all over the country, from Ashkelon, Tel-Aviv, drove all the way and volunteered their time just to make us happy.”

Naomi shared that the lady in charge of making the chuppah told her that her husband had been at the nature festival that was brutally attacked by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7. Her husband saw his friends being shot in front of his eyes, which was very traumatic.

Regarding the wedding chuppah, “She told me that she did this because what we’re doing gives hope again,” Naomi shared. “I really saw the heart people have to help in times of need.”

“We often forget that,” she added, “but in times of need, Israelis are really good. We’re all here for one another.”

This togetherness and solidarity within Israeli society – and the Jewish community at large – is what Hamas terrorists did not take into account on the day they invaded and massacred Israeli soldiers and civilians.

Hamas saw Israel’s protests and debates over judicial overhauls and corruption scandals, and thought the Jewish state would remain divisive under fire.

But they were wrong. This war against Hamas in Gaza has made Israeli society more united than ever, and more connected to its Jewish identity.

“I also think about all these families being broken apart, and we have the privilege of stand on the same land and start a new family and a new home in Israel,” Naomi said during the interview.

“The venue, the amount of flowers, the exact right dress, nothing of that really matters. What matters is to start a new family in Israel at a time like this. We both love this country and felt this is an important statement. I had friends wondering why getting married during a war, when something could happen to him, and I answered – that’s exactly why! If something does happen to him, I want to be by his side,” she said.Benny Maidan and Naomi Theodor at their wedding (Photo: Shahar Cohen)

This hope, with weddings, marriage proposals, births, etc.; some 300,000 Israelis living abroad who returned home to serve in military reserves to protect and defend the State of Israel; and even the wave of new immigration we expect as Jews begin to feel more unsafe in the diaspora – all of these things make the Israel even more significant for Jewish society than ever.

And such anticipation and hope for the future is happening davka at such a time as this.

“But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread.” – Exodus 1:12

War Stories: A Spiritual Battle 8 November, 2023

This is a difficult post to write. If I haven’t estranged readers up until now, this one will possibly do so.

As a point of reference, I am a Torah observant Jew married to an observant Catholic. Since I’ve known John, we’ve had more than a few heartfelt dialogues over the past 44 years. I have written books and articles on theology under an assumed name and have led Bible studies for decades on the Tanach (Old Testament) and the Hebrew roots of the New Testament. I have studied the mystical (Jewish) Tanya and the Talmud as well as the history of the Church and the early Church fathers, especially in their thoughts and relations to Judaism. Judaic studies is more than just a hobby for me.

The current Israel-Gaza War is real and physical. It’s nasty. I pray as few casualties as absolutely possible. The war is a battle between good and evil, a culture of life versus a culture of death. You can see it in the brutality of the October 7 massacre and you can see it and hear it in the voices of the mobs and pro-Palestine protests worldwide.

Not only is it a real, physical war, but it is also a spiritual war. Israel is a country founded on the three Abrahamic religions: Judaism, Christianity and Islam. We live in the land where the great Bible stories have taken place – for us, we’re not far from the battlefield of Hazor where Joshua fought many battles; Mt Tavor where Deborah sat in judgement and where Jesus was transfigured. We have visited the burial cave of Hannah and her seven sons. The gate in Dan, a pre-Canaanite city recently discovered, where Abraham negotiated with the four kings for his nephew,Lot is a short drive away. The prophet Habakkuk is buried right down the road from us. Elijah and the prophets of Baal took place on Carmel Ridge which I see from my balcony. And of course, the Galilee holds Nazareth and all of the sites where Jesus lived and taught and did miracles. It is truly a Holy Land.

The people of Israel are spiritually tied to this Land in a way like no other. The Jews live out the Bible mitzvot (the laws and edicts) in their daily lives. The Aramaeans see themselves as among the first followers of Jesus. And the Christians see themselves as “living stones.” And sometimes we all don’t get along – we bump elbows on occasion. There are definite religious tensions here at times.

At present, there is a genuine spiritual revival going on here throughout the Jewish community. Soldiers are requesting tsitsit (fringes for the corners of their undershirts), kippot/yarmulkes and t’fillin (phylactery boxes). They are spontaneously singing and dancing and blowing the shofar in the fields. To answer a statement written to me a few days ago- no. That doesn’t make one holy or guarantee one’s salvation or deliverance, but it’s definitely a Biblical commandment (Numbers 15:37-41) for a Jewish male that is now being observed. People everywhere are holding Bible and Torah studies and are forming prayer groups. Everyone is lifting voices and minds to G-d. The usual atmosphere now feels charged with a tangible holiness.

Even the radio disc jockeys of Israel know how to set an atmosphere. Instead of the usual pop music, you turn on the radio and hear Psalms and Scripture set to hauntingly beautiful music. It makes me want to cry. Voices are being lifted up heavenward in true, heartfelt repentance and prayer. I’ve never experienced anything like it in a synagogue, a church or at a tent revival (we used to have them regularly in our small Southern town. Every summer. The clapping. The tambourines. The singing. The shouting). This is something very different.

As stated here yesterday, the Jews are not a perfect people by any means!! Far from it! But neither are we a bloodthirsty people. We all pray for world peace. The examples given to me regarding the story in Genesis about vengeance of Jacob’s sons after their sister who was kidnapped and raped; the battles Joshua fought in the Promised Land and the battles of Saul and David (with tremendous casualties on BOTH sides); and how this is not the Christian solution to paganism and violence is not pertinent at this time. That Jesus preached a message of peace and love for one’s enemies by several readers might be true, but you are not living here at this time. John and I have had this discussion repeatedly and we are convinced he spoke on a personal, not a national level. Yet, still, we are a nation/people who value life and the dignity of each person as made in G-d’s image.

We are in a fight for the existence of the Jewish nation, and conversely, Western society. Look at a map. Ours is not a friendly neighborhood. Not only Gaza and Hamas but Hizbulla in Lebanon and the Houthis of Yemen as well as the Syrians, all backed by Iran are breathing heavily down our necks. Where else do we have to go but to G-d? We are not seeking revenge but the IDF is attempting to surgically extract and eradicate Hamas while trying to rescue 243 hostages and spare the lives of innocents. While engaged in booby trapped urban combat, the most dangerous there is. If you’ve heard the chant, from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea Palestine will be free of Jews. Then they will focus on the Christians and the West. One can stand up now or face silencing and eradication later.

In response to the other person who wrote: “Jesus taught us to love and pray for our enemies and to turn the other cheek. We are to give up our tunic if our persecutor takes our cloak and to “walk the extra mile.”

Firstly, in Leviticus 19:18 it is commanded for us to love our neighbor as ourselves. It was my Bat Mitzvah portion. I see it often on bumpers and car windshields here. We take this seriously, especially now. The help and cooperation between different groups of people is unbelievable. Religious and non-religious are acting as one in unity. We are doing what we can to support one another and have always tried to uphold the mandate “to be a light unto the nations.”

Israel, although a tiny country land-wise and population-wise has led the world on many fronts. Israelis working together, Jew, Christian and Muslim, have given the nations a great many medical and technological advancements. Some include the endoscopic camera, flexible stent (I have one now), Israeli pressure bandage, paramedics on motorcycles who get to the patient before an ambulance. We have developed agricultural technologies that save the soil and the water (hydroponics, drip irrigation, bee and hive propagation, natural pest prevention). Israel has given the world drugs for Parkinson’s, Altzheimers, Diabetes, MS, cancer. For those who use a cell phone or computer, we have given the world Firewall protection, WAZE navigation systems, stand alone instant messaging and first flash disc storage. How about Soda Stream and Roomba? Both Israeli innovations. The Israeli system that developed a cube no larger than a dorm fridge which extracts oxygen from the air to somehow produce fresh, potable water has been given to communities in drought stricken Africa as well parts of South America. We provided Gaza with water pipes and they, in turn, have dug them up to produce missiles.

The Israeli search and rescue teams are among the first in the world to provide emergency and medical assistance to those most in need throughout the world. They have set up full spectrum field hospitals in Nepal and Mexico after their earthquakes; in Haiti in Ukraine to name a few. That, in practicality, like the Good Samaritan, is showing love, not just to the Jewish people, but to all humanity.

Our hospitals treat not only Jews, but Muslims, Palestinians. The head of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, was treated and cured in an Israeli hospital for a brain tumor. He is now planning the mass-destruction of Israel. If that is not loving one’s enemy and showing no preference, I don’t know what is.

During the Syrian Civil War, Operation Good Neighbor provided innocent civilians with unmarked humanitarian aid in the form of water, flour, beans, baby formula, diapers and other necessities. Civilians wounded by their own clashing armies and children with heart problems, cancers and cleft lip and palate were airlifted to Israeli hospitals for treatment at no cost to them. My son was part of this relief effort.

One day, perhaps you will be able to visit the Holy Land and actually see firsthand the wonders of this Start-Up Nation.

Secondly, to address the Matthew Scripture. If someone asks you to walk a mile, go two. For historical reference, in the time of Jesus, Israel was ruled by Rome. There was an impressarial service that a Roman could impose upon any Jewish person, usually the weakest. The Jew would be expected to carry the weapons/baggage of the soldier for a Roman mile. This load could be up to 50-60 pounds. The roads were dirt, gravel or cobblestones. It was arduous business. Oftentimes, the elderly, feeble, pregnant would cave under the load. To go an extra mile would mean almost certain death. It’s sadly ironic that Jesus himself walked the Roman mile on his way to Calvary.

If a person takes your cloak, and you give him your tunic, your under robe, it would render you in a state of immodesty. In Jewish law, the covering of the body, especially the private parts, is holy. To bare the body in the sight of someone to whom one is not married is deeply humiliating and even sinful to an observant Jew.

When a person strikes you on the cheek, he uses the inside of his palm. It hurts, but is a fair fight, so to speak. When you turn your cheek, it forces the striker to smack you backhandedly. Definitely not fair, and if wearing a ring, can actually do more damage that a front handed smack.

All three examples are a way of standing up to your opponent in a defensive, yet provoking way. If the attacker accepts the challenge, if he causes more damage, the onus is on him. It makes the attacker look weak, in turn shaming him, therefore the underdog in essence wins. Seen in this light, none of the three examples is “walking in love towards one’s adversary.” It’s actually a defensive stance.

To say that “the Children of Abraham lost their status and blessing as the Chosen People of G-d because they did not accept Jesus as their Messiah… the Church has inherited their blessing and they will be forever a cursed people” is very dangerous. To write that the Church is the New Israel is not Scriptural. It not only foments baseless hatred and antisemitism to a dangerous level, it is downright wrong. This theology has a name. It is called Replacement Theology or Supercessionism which has been responsible for many a pogrom and ethnic cleansing. Romans 11:29 in the New Testament states that “the gifts and calling of G-d are irrevocable.(for he does not withdraw what He has given , nor does He change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call). When G-d makes a covenant, by its very definition it is eternal. Does G-d not love all His children, Jew or Christian, slave or free? Has G-d only one blessing??? Yes. We are ALL sinners who fall short, but surely the G-d we share is by far bigger and more merciful than we frail humans, made in His image are.

For a bit of Church history: the early Christian movement started as a Jewish sect based on Jewish scriptures. Jesus and his entire family were practicing religious Jews. His disciples and first followers were all Jewish. He was from the tribe of Judah, born in Bethlehem near Jerusalem. He had a Brit Milah, circumcision rite, putting him under the Abrahamic covenant. He had a Bar Mitzvah (teaching in the Temple), celebrated the feasts (Chanukah, John 7; Pesach; Sukkot). He lived in the Galilee, Israel. He taught and expounded on the Law and the prophets. He kept Kosher. He made mikveh (ritual immersion) under John the Baptist.

At its inception, this group of mostly Jewish believers in Jesus as Messiah formed a dominant faction, centered under the leadership of the apostles Peter and James in Jerusalem. As Believers took the message of their messiah out to the world, the make up of the congregation shifted. The Jews were now in the minority and the Gentiles were becoming more numerous.

50 A.D. was an auspicious time in the history of the Early Church, as a split between the Jewish Believers and the Gentile Believers was an imminent threat. The Judaean Believers, together with Paul and Barnabus who had returned to Israel from a successful missions trip were gathered in what would be known as the First Jerusalem Council.

Until this time, the Early Church was thoroughly Jewish in both members and in practice. The dilemma arose: uncircumcised Gentiles would be welcome into the Body of Believers, but was circumcision needed at all? Were Kashrut, the Shabbat and Festivals to be kept? What about the other 613 laws? What would socialization and worship look like? How were they to create unity between the two such visibly and spiritually diverse groups?

Paul and Barnabas had been establishing congregations of mixed Believers in Lydia, Phrygia, and Galatia. The movement started in the synagogues and moved outwards to the pagan lands. Until that time, any Gentile person who wished to become Jewish had to be thoroughly educated in the laws of Moses and take on the yoke of Judaism. Some of the Jewish Believers were converting the Gentiles to Judaism before they were allowed to be discipled and undergo ritual immersion into the Body of Messiah. Faced with these exact problems, Paul wrote the Letter to the Galatians. He penned his epistle on his way to the Council in Jerusalem.

After much discussion at that Jerusalem Council, Peter, the apostolic head at that time, gave his well-reasoned speech, recorded in Acts 15. The Holy Spirit had also been poured out on the Gentiles who had eagerly accepted the Gospel, as confirmed by Paul and Barnabas. G-d had made no distinction between the Jews and the Nations when granting salvation. Even James, head of the Jerusalem congregation, agreed, citing Scriptural references. Thus it was decided, much for the sake of unity, that these new Believers would not need to be burdened with accepting the Mosaic Law, but would keep four basic laws: refraining from eating foods sacrificed to idols; from any meat that had been strangled; the prohibition against consuming blood; and the adherence to sexual morality. It was resolved at the Jerusalem Council that non-Jews do not need to convert to Judaism, but that they should not follow their old idolatrous practices of worshipping their pantheon of gods. They would be brought into monotheistic worship, salvation through Jesus and the promise of resurrection to eternal life. Implicit was the idea that the Jewish faction could maintain their Jewish customs. Thus, a rupture within the Body of Believers was narrowly averted.

Skip ahead two centuries: the growth of the Nations/Gentiles within the Church quickly overtook the number of Jewish Believers. Although the original intent was to have one unified Body, Jewish and Gentile Believers together, the new majority began to call for the Jews to abandon their adherence to their Jewish identities. Assimilation into the Church became the expected sign of unity as the Gentile contingent grew more dominant. This would eventually lead to Replacement Theology/Supercessionism, the concept of the Church replacing Israel as the covenant people of G-d, receiving the promises and blessings of Messiah in their stead. It eventually led to a mass-persecution of the Jewish brethren as well as the non-believing Jews. In essence, what started as a Jewish movement was swallowed up by a ‘Gentile’ Church. This was nowhere to be found in actual dogma, but became widely accepted (false) theology preached and practiced by the Early Church.

I am in no way putting down my Christian brethren, nor am I criticizing the Catholics. I am just trying to explain the origins and the dangers of this line of thought. With Christian Zionism and with the Catholic encyclical of Nostra Aetate and Lumen Gentium, I had thought the Jewish people and the Christian people were coming together again, not exactly eye to eye, but as brothers nonetheless, the fig tree and the vine intertwined producing fruit together.

So if we are bothers and sisters in Spirit, please see that this, too, is a spiritual battle to sow division. Where there is division and disunity, the enemy can enter in. Israel was physically attacked at a time when she seemed at her weakest. The government was broken, factions were fighting and demonstrating. Reservists threatened to not show up for duty. There was widespread vilification each of the other side.

When Christians label Jewish people as killers of their Messiah, it only exacerbates mistrust and ill will. Throughout history, this has only led to ghettoization and persecution. There is already enough hatred in the world. Don’t let the enemy win, spiritually or physically. We must stand up to evil together.

Glory to G-d in the highest and peace to all people of good will.

War Stories: 7 November,2023

This post is written in the blessed memory of the 69 year old Jewish gentleman at the Rally for Israel in Westlake/Thousand Oaks who was murdered by a pro-Palestinian activist on Sunday. This took place in my once-peaceful home town. This is what happens when evil goes unchecked-

To all those well-wishers reading Israel Dreams who have sent blessings and words of support, I appreciate your kindnesses. To those of you who have offered to pray – even taking shifts in the middle of the night – to pray for the safety of my family and for Israel, I pray for an outpouring of G-d‘s blessings upon you. For those offering financial and material assistance, in the coming days I will provide another list of where to contribute so your gifts will be put to direct use where most needed. I can’t begin to tell you how much your emails, messages and calls are helping me through this time.

In the next few posts, I will be countering directly some of the misdirections and misguided barbs that I am also being overwhelmed by. Although, I’m sure well intentioned, I don’t know if people realize the damage they do and fomenting of baseless hatred within others when their personal opinions are not grounded in fact. I have the ability to allow or block comments on both this WordPress site and on my personal email. Sadly, I have had to block 9 people. Knowing that some were both colleagues in my interfaith work and old friends is shocking and saddening to me.

First, I know we (as Jews and Christians) are called to be a light and love to others, doing good works and helping the downtrodden. And yes, I understand your points on the Christian call to ‘forgive seventy times seventy’ and the inability to do so causing ‘a provoked enmity between the people of Israel and her neighboring countries.’ This places the onus squarely upon the Jewish people. In this conflict, one should not play both sides as the sides should not be equated.

I will also address the person that stated my family in particular, as well as all the Jewish people in general, are colonizers who have intruded on the land of the indigenous people with their wealth, their culture and their power.

I will begin with a brief glimpse of history and theology to establish a basis for the unfortunate circumstances of today. The word “Jew” comes from the Biblical land of Judaea and the Hebrew tribe of Judah. Judaea from the time of the monarchies of King Saul and King David included all of the area surrounding Jerusalem. The area northwards from the coastal plain adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea (the Biblical and historical Shefela) to the mountains of Lebanon, northeast to Damascus and east along the Sea of Galilee which pours into the Jordan River, formed the borders for the ten tribes of Israel. The lands Judaea and Israel belonged to the Jews. From the Canaanite period with the progeny of Abraham, they were the indigenous peoples.

Both the kingdoms of Israel and Judaea were displaced in 734-732 BC when they were conquered by the Assyrians, and in 597-586 BC by the Babylonians. Most Jewish people from the Assyrian invasion remained in exile although several thousand were never captured, living in hidden pockets throughout Israel. Babylonian captives returned to their homeland and lived in the territories of Israel and Judaea until they were scattered throughout the nations by the Romans in 70AD and 135 AD (Bar Kochba/Battle of Beitar). There always remained a Jewish presence, however small in the land (Yavne, Safed, Hebron) even after the Romans expelled them.

After the Roman Empire fell, the Holy Land was inhabited by mostly early Christians: Jewish people who believed Jesus was the Messiah, Arameans, Samaritans and Byzantines, all who formed the Church. Also present were Jewish scholars of the Torah, the Talmudists, merchants and traders and Bedouins who wandered the desert lands. Despite the various invaders over the centuries (Mamaluks, Crusaders, Ottoman Turks), Israel remained an inhospitable desert.

Mark Twain visited in 1867, recounting in The Innocents Abroad, his travel diary:

“Stirring scenes…occur in this valley [Hula] no more. There is not a solitary village throughout its whole extent—not for thirty miles in either direction. There are two or three small clusters of Bedouin tents, but not a single permanent habitation. One may ride 10 miles, hereabouts, and not see ten human beings…”

“These unpeopled deserts, these rusty mounds of barrenness, that never, never, never do shake the glare from their harsh outlines, and fade and faint into vague perspective; that melancholy ruin of Capernaum; this stupid village of Tiberias, slumbering under its six funereal plumes of palms…”

“It was hard to realise that this silent plain had once… trembled to the tramp of armed men…A desolation is here that not even imagination can grace with the pomp of life and action. We reached Tabor safely… We never saw a human being on the whole route.”

“Nazareth is forlorn…Jericho the accursed lies in a moldering ruin today, even as Joshua’s miracle left it more than three thousand years ago; Bethlehem and Bethany, in their poverty and their humiliation, have nothing about them now to remind one that they once knew…high honor….”

In the latter part of the 19th century, the Jewish people began to return to the land of Israel, now called Palestine, a derogatory re-naming by the Romans. These mostly Russian and Eastern European Jews were escaping persecution and forced expulsion (Fiddler on the Roof). Because I have in previous posts given the history of Jewish return, the Balfour Declaration, San Remo Documents, and UN Declaration of Recognition (1948) I will only refer you to those pages.

Israel was established as a place of particular protection for Jewish refugees – a poor but self-determined peoples hailing not only from Europe but from the Levant, the Middle Eastern countries. They were escaping the Farhud, the true ethnic cleansing of Jews from Iraq, Persia (Iran), Syria, Yemen, and other Muslim Arab countries. They also fled genocidal regimes in Islamic North Africa: Morocco, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. Israel was a haven for the mostly impoverished Jew returning to his homeland.

In 1953, the chairman of the American Christian Palestine Committee wrote: “The Arab population of Palestine was small and limited until Jewish resettlement restored the barren lands and drew to it Arabs from neighboring countries… When organized Jewish colonization began in 1882, there were fewer than 150,000 Arabs in the land. The great majority of the Arab population in recent decades were comparative newcomers—either late immigrants or descendants of persons who had immigrated into Palestine in the previous seventy years.”

When Israel was first being partitioned (see Partition Plan), the first offer of a Two-State solution was given to the Jews and to the Arabs. The Jews were given (and accepted) a land that was easily divided and indefensible. All the land in the south below Jerusalem was desert. The Arab population , Muslim and Christian, would be given land upon which they could live alongside their Jewish neighbors peacefully. They flatly rejected this proposal, instead asking for all the land – free of Jews. See map below:

The Arabs (Palestinian Authority/Fatah) would go on to reject a two state solution seven times. The “three no’s” first issued in the Khartoum Declaration of 1967 have stood to this day. They are as follows “no peace with Israel, no negotiations with Israel, no recognition of Israel, and ‘maintenance of the rights of the Palestinian people in their nation.’ The Khartoum Declaration was the first serious warning to the Israelis that their expectation of an imminent ‘phone call’ from the Arab world might be a pipe dream” (Sachar). There would be no peace.

Despite this, Israel has made several land concessions with the now-labeled Palestinian people in return for peace. The latest was the Oslo Accords of 1993-1995. In 2005 Israel ceded all the land in Gaza to the Palestinian Liberation Organization, based on UN resolutions 242 and 338, giving them a sovereign state and humanitarian aid package. Gaza rapidly devolved into a bastion of terror activities against Israel (and now the West in general) under the elected rule of Hamas.

That is the basic history. As for the Christian response to forgive and love, I believe Jesus was speaking to his followers on a personal level – not a national or political level. As the phrase goes “Peace to all people OF GOOD WILL.” To my Christian friends: no person of good will wants war or collateral damage to the innocent civilians that are always caught in the crossfire. This is a spiritual battle as well as a political battle as you should well understand. There are forces of good and forces of evil; a culture of life versus a culture of death. When Jesus was in the desert, he rebuked Satan. He told him to flee. Jesus did not forgive him or try to live peaceably along side him.

The acts perpetrated by Hamas (which translates ‘violence’ in Hebrew, Aramaic and Arabic) on the morning of 7 October were acts of barbarism and senseless brutality against humanity. The torture, rape, murder, mutilation and kidnapping of people- including the pre-born, babies, children, women, the elderly and peaceful concert-goers is inexcusable. The Hamas terrorist infiltrators into the State of Israel were ruthless in their actions, not differentiating between Jews, Christians, Muslims or nationality. This is a definition of Barbarian. I will not apologize for my reposting of an image and its wording.

No matter how nicely couched, I pity the fact that you or other Christian humanitarians were offended or ‘triggered’ by the word Barbarian. What is even more interesting is that the original person who posted this, an Israeli Jew, neither called for violence or retribution, but instead asked for prayers. Evil needs to be called out for what it is. Full stop.

As for the three persons who continue to write me on a daily basis: Israel has not “become a nation of bloodthirsty people seeking revenge and a disproportionate response. Their army for decades has been waging war the against innocent Palestinians resulting in genocide of the Palestinian people.”

I addressed this in previous posts, yet the above statement continues to be presented. The definition of genocide or ethnic cleansing is when an entire population is exterminated on the basis of race, class or ethnicity. Please see the table of population in my previous blogpost. The Arab population in British Palestine in 1922 was 673,388. With the influx of Arabic people into the land, it had grown to 1,342, 207 in 1947. Immediately preceding the declaration of the State of Israel as a sovereign nation and majority Jewish homeland in 1948, the Arab League called for the Arabic-speaking residents to vacate (mostly to Jordan, but also to Egypt and Syria) as they declared war on Israel. After planned ‘defeat of the Zionist entity ,’ the displaced Arabs would return. This left Israel with an Arab population of only 155,022.

Today, the Arabic people represent the largest ethnic minority in the country. Excluding the West Bank (Judaea & Samaria) territories, they number 2,463, 094 as of July, 2023. Their population has dramatically increased over the past several years. Obviously this goes against the definition of genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Regarding the statement that the IDF is responsible for “collective punishment of the people of Gaza:” This is a new phrase that means the “idea punishing an entire country for the acts of a minority.” It is used for pro-Palestinian propaganda purposes alongside the other phrase you used. I believe you stated that “Israel has been transformed over the past weeks from an instrument of justice to an instrument of vengeance which is antithetical to all Judaea-Christian values. I strongly urge you and your fellow countrymen to take a stance against a disproportionate response.”

Thank you for your thoughts on the situation we find ourselves in. No country is perfect. All institutions are made of humans, which are both fallible and prone to sin. That recognized, I have already stated in previous posts the adherence to the Code of Ethics of the Israel Defense Forces. I have also written on the commitment of the IDF to the International Rules of Engagement for Modern Warfare.

Hamas and PIJ, on the other hand are the ones who continually violate these laws with their war crimes by using civilians as human shields; using humanitarian aid to arm combatants; targeting civilian populations and committing atrocities against innocent individuals. I invite you to read The Hamas Charter which explicitly calls for the extermination of the Jews as an Islamic mandate. As for proportionate response, I leave you with the Skynews interview of the British author and political philosopher, Douglas Murray –

War Stories 5 November, 2023

Sometimes it is not only good, but necessary to take a break. All day Friday, tensions were running high up here in Northern Israel. Sunrise brought us loud booming noises followed by the sounds of the IDF jets as Hizbulla decided to wake us up early with shelling. Nazralla, head of Hizbulla and Iran operative, was set to make a nationally televised statement at 3pm. Would he open up the Northern front and declare all out war?

I take it all seriously. When I am in the house I make sure to bring with me (from room to room) everything I might need to take into the safe room. Bags of medicine and personal objects for the day, iPad, chargers, cell phone, Bible, purse, keys… at night everything is lined up to grab quickly in the event of a red alert. There is a list taped to the bedroom door. We have 18 seconds to get into the safe room from the moment the alarm sounds. I continually go through checklists in my head. Will I need? Do I have? Did I forget? And so we live-

Instead of spending Friday fretting, I decided to cook for Shabbat. Mostly comfort foods which not only satisfy the always upset stomachs, but food that nourishes the soul. Every Friday John goes to the store to pick up two challah breads. It’s a matter of convenience. This Friday, along with many, many of my Israeli sisters, I made my own. It’s a commandment and a blessing.

This Friday was different somehow. Already three full weeks into the war, we had heard of several miracles. One is the reawakening of the people spiritually. Not only are women who usually are not challah bakers, making their own bread, but women who never light Shabbat candles have decided to start celebrating Shabbat. Thursday night I spoke with a dear Catholic friend back in California. She was going to light Sabbath candles together with her Jewish neighbor who hadn’t kept Shabbat in decades. I love the bonds of friendship between Faith traditions. It’s a beautiful thing. We all need to take a pause from time to time, not only to break away from the busyness but to just be.

And the pause continues in other ways. Throughout the world we have been witnessing a huge rise in antisemitism: on university campuses there are unruly mobs chanting ‘death to Jews;’ people pulling down signs of the kidnapped victims because they do not want the world to know the truth; Jewish cemeteries desecrated and burned; Jewish stars and swastikas marked on the homes of Jews.

This Friday both Israel and the US have issued a warning for Israelis/Jews to reconsider global travel at this time. The world is just too dangerous for a Jew to travel – so what are the leaders doing to curb the threat? Telling people to cancel their travel plans. Planes going to or coming from Israel are now too much of a target. Our Easy Jet airline tickets to go to the UK to visit our daughter at the end of November have been canceled. The only airline flying in and out of Israel is ElAl. For us, this is an unwelcome pause of inconvenience.

It is interesting to note that during a war, most countries experience an egress of citizens fleeing the country (Syria, Ukraine, Lebanon, Nigeria). For the first two weeks after 7 October, tens of thousands of people have flown into Israel to join the IDF or to help out in any way possible. Airlines cancelled flights, but ElAl had full flights several times a day. Israel has had a sizable uptick in returning expats as well as people escaping persecution in their own countries. Our immigration numbers are surpassing all records for this year. This is unheard of in a time of war. It’s beyond time for the Jewish people to return home. No pause. This too is miraculous.

The only other planes entering Israel are chartered private flights. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is here on his third visit since October 7. He is trying to convince our government to reinstate a “pause” in Israeli troop movements in Gaza. This Israeli ceasefire is to allow for more innocent civilians to move into Southern Gaza as well as for more humanitarian aid to come through. There was absolutely no mention of a ceasefire for Hamas/PIJ who are still sending rockets into Israel, albeit more sporadically. Thursday night, Friday and Saturday the greater Tel Aviv area was hit several times. The missiles are currently being fired from S Gaza for the most part.

Netanyahu has adamantly stated the military is not going to break in its mission to clear Gaza of Hamas terrorists. However, they are still letting in 50 semi trucks a day with humanitarian relief from Egypt. The IDF admits 100 trucks of aid in through the Kerem Shalom Israeli border crossing. According to a senior US official in a press briefing in Israel yesterday, oxygen concentrators and other “tunnel materials were being smuggled in as well as chemicals for explosives assembly disguised as flour sacks.” It was discovered that several ambulances coming across the Egyptian border were stacked with well-armed ‘paramedic ‘ terrorist infiltrators and Iranian RPGs and guns.

Blinken also requested a pause in order to get Americans out of Gaza through Egypt. At the press briefing in Tel Aviv it was stated, “The pause in allowing foreign nationals to leave was not due to Israel, but was caused by Hamas not allowing anyone to leave Gaza. Another route of escape from the Red Line dividing Northern from Southern Gaza has been completely shut down by Hamas operatives who are shooting their own civilians, forcing them back into the war zone.

“After Hamas was convinced in negotiations by the U.S., Egypt and Qatar, to allow the exit of foreign nationals and wounded, Egypt on Wednesday agreed to open its Rafah border crossing.

“Hamas was to provide a list of people wishing to leave beforehand, which was then vetted.

“But the list that was provided, once it was vetted, had about a third of the wounded Palestinians on the list were members of Hamas, fighters. They’re members of Hamas,” according to the U.S. official.” – the New York Post and Times of Israel.

Israel is supposed to play by the rules. Israel is almost always the country accused at the UN of war crimes and of crimes against humanity, although it follows the Geneva Convention Rules of Engagement. Thursday Iran was made head of the UN Human Rights Council. There is definitely a pause from reality and a pause from common sense in the world.

As for the Israeli Defense Forces, there is no pause. Time is more and more of the essence for the rescue of the 234 hostages, especially the babies and the elderly (under 12 months, over 80 years). The army has now completely encircled Gaza City and is involved in building to building urban warfare. Tunnel systems and entrances are being located. Robots and other high tech instruments are being used to limit casualties as the tunnel system is well booby trapped. The terror infrastructure is being hit from land, air and sea.

Concerning pauses and breaks, Yehezkiel Z., a NYFD Captain was going to volunteer with a group of 117 other US firefighters to come to Israel to fight. Boots on the ground wherever most needed. He spoke with his brother-in-law, an IDF chaplain who told Hezekiah, “Stop. You are big strong guys, Hezi. But that’s not what we need right now. You know what we need? A magen, a shield. A shield of protection. We need you to daven (pray) for us 24/7. We have men and women here praying and saying Psalms. But we need prayers from midnight to 6am Israeli time. Especially from 2am-5am when the fighting gets tough here. That’s 7-10 pm New York time. We need your prayer covering. G-d’s shield. That’s what we need right now, Hezi.”

So I think we can all do this. Take 15 minutes. Read a Psalm out loud. Say a prayer for there to be no or only a few casualties. Say a prayer to end evil. Say a prayer for the wounded. Several people have asked me what Scriptures I use when I pray. I will include them at the bottom. If you don’t pray, send us some good vibes. We can use all the help we can get right now.

Scriptures I am praying:

Genesis 12:2-3

Psalms 3, 5, 7, 17, 18, 27, 37, 56, 83, 91, 121

Proverbs 3:21-26

For the hostages: Psalm 31

Also:

Zechariah 9:1-5

Jeremiah 39:17-18.

I love Isaiah chapters 51-55

John’s favorite is the story of Sennacherib, also a beautiful poem by George Gordon, Lord Byron (“The Destruction of Sennacherib “). It can be found in 2 Kings:18-19, 2 Chronicles 32 and Isaiah 36-37.

It recounts the story of Judaea and Jerusalem when it was completely surrounded by not only the Assyrians, but all the neighboring armies of the Middle East. Things looked pretty hopeless. Instead of fretting, the Israelites m ,under King Hezekiah, prayed and trusted in G-d. In the morning, before the Hebrews set out to battle, they found all 185,000 enemy soldiers dead before them. Sennacherib had fled back to Nineveh and no battle had to be fought.

Until next time, May there be peace to all people of good will. 🕊️
