Deep Underground (to Cathy & Harv & Mona-). 20 October, 2024. Day 380

What an interesting time and place in which we live! Life during wartime goes on as ‘normally’ as possible here. If you ask me to describe Israelis with one word it would be RESILIENT.

Shabbat began for us with a heavy barrage of missiles that continued in bursts about 20-30 minutes apart until about 01:00. It was all around us, but in our part of town we didn’t get a siren. At 06:29 (sunrise) we were awakened with my phone going off.TSEVAH ADOM! TSEVAH ADOM! TSEVAH ADOM!!” I looked and saw the missiles were headed towards the Haifa suburbs, the Krayot.

The volleys from Hizbulla continued throughout the day. My phone would go off; I’d check to see where they were headed (whew! pray!); we’d hear sirens in the distance; go about what we were doing as normally as possible (breakfast, packing for our upcoming trip, reading); wait for and count the booms. Sometimes the thunder came low from the distance, other times it seemed as if it was overhead and the windows would rattle and the house jolt a bit. Keep calm and carry on. What else can one do? Resiliency. How I love this word!

In addition to the missiles falling as far south as Zikron Ya’akov area (south of Haifa), Iranian supplied drones were flying in from Lebanon carrying payloads of explosives. Several were shot down. This is nothing new. Last weekend, the situation escalated as a drone snuck through and got as far as an army base in Binyamina (towards the center of Israel just east of Caesarea). It was planned. 07:15. The soldiers were all gathered in the mess hall. Boom!!! No warning. The drone hit and exploded the dining hall.p

In that incident, 3 soldiers were critically wounded, 14 in serious condition. They were helicoptered to nearby hospitals. Another set of drones, which went undetected by radar, were again launched that last Sunday evening following the same path. One was intercepted by an F-15, the other slipped through and hit another dining hall in a military training center near Caesaria. This time, 4 soldiers died, 62 of the new recruits were injured. It was the highest casualty toll in a single day since the war started a year ago. Just how did Hizbulla know where and when to strike for maximum impact? Satellite imagery?

Ofri Tamari, 19; Yosef Hieb, 19, a Bedouin Israeli soldier; Yoav Agmon, 19; Alon Amitai, 19 All Golani soldiers in training

Most of the drones are made from plastics. They fly at very low altitudes, are incredibly fast, and can fly between buildings and trees as they are controlled remotely by operators. Yesterday, Hizbulla launched more of these suicide drones. In one swarm, three were shot down and one flew as far as Caesaria, exploding near the publicly known private residence of the Netanyahu’s. This was very serious and takes the war to a whole new level as it targeted the Prime Minister directly.

John and I left home at 6 this morning, just as light was brightening the eastern sky. He is having a colonoscopy at Rambam Hospital in Haifa and we needed to leave early. All of the hospitals in the North have literally moved underground. That way they won’t be affected by bombing. Rambam was the first to do this.

The Sammy Ofer fortified medical center was begun in 2002 in response to the Second Intifada. Three stories underground is the hospital parking lot. In the event of emergency or war, the structure can be converted into a full service 2000-bed medical facility in 36 hours. The entire space is sanitized and services like oxygen, gasses for anesthesia, power cables, water are piped in from the ceiling and within the walls.

I sit here writing as John has his procedure. There was a red alert for the Haifa suburbs just 5 minutes ago. Down here in the deep underground I neither heard sirens nor felt the ground tremble beneath my chair. John will be anesthetized in the parking garage. All of the medical staff and necessary equipment is there. Surgeries are all on the lowest level. It’s an amazing sight to behold. On the level above, -2, newborn babies cry in their little cots. So far this month over 70 babies have been born here. I pray the rest of the facilities never have to be used.

After his procedure, John was moved to hetosh’shoot, recovery, which was upstairs on main floor near the emergency room. Another siren. This time I heard it. All the patients and their caregivers were wheeled into a protected space by the nurses. Calmly. Calmly. “Opa!!Welcome to Israel!” Well that was just a little exciting. We waited for the sound of booms as the rockets were intercepted by Iron Dome overhead. Bang! Bang! boom! Boom! Bang! Wait 10 minutes. All safe. Time to get wheeled back.

Doctors, nurses and patients waiting out the missiles in a protected area It’s a little nuts now that I look at it.

In other news, the fighting in southern Lebanon has intensified as more terror tunnels are uncovered there (what else is new?). There is so much evidence that Hizbulla was planning another Gaza Envelope infiltration into northern Israel and massacre. We can hear the explosions from our house. Yet the children are playing outside, albeit close to home and the workers are doing their jobs reconstructing the house below us. Another brigade of reservists was called up for active duty yesterday. All are reservists, and all are highly trained.

I couldn’t believe this but it’s verified from a friend. Not all of the soldiers going in still have up-to-date protective gear. They still have the old helmets and vests (without ceramic plates) from 1973. This is more than outrageous. It’s a matter of their lives and death. Chaya Hitin started Unit 11741 to raise money for helmets and breastplates. She and Daniel Mael (aka The Maelman) started a production facility in Netanya, Israel to make the bulletproof helmets and plates to give full coverage for the soldiers. The helmets can be camouflaged or mounted with a camera. Please help them help the soldiers by donating to unit11741.com. You can read all about them on their website. We fully support the work they are doing. 100% of the donations go directly to the manufacturing of the protective gear.

Five more young soldiers fell in battle in southern Lebanon. May the memories of their lives be a blessing to all. We can hear when the helicopters go overhead bringing the casualties of war to Rambam.

Maj. Ofer Bachar, 24; Capt. Elad SimanTov, 23; st.Sgt. Elyashiv Eitan Wieder, 22; st.Sgt. Yakov Hillel, 21; st Sgt. Yehudah Dror Yahalom, 21.

And another heartbreaking death. After serving in the Border Patrol unit, Adair Kaddish, 33, became a police officer. He was engaged to be married in three weeks… but was shot by a terrorist at an intersection south of Tel Aviv. The assassin was eliminated shortly thereafter.

Also, two more fell yesterday, Sgt. Ofer Berkovich,20, and Sgt. Elishai Young, a Hebrew African from Dimona (originally from the U.S.). They were warriors of the 401st battalion in Gaza.

In other news, Israel has once again given in to US pressure. The reprisal from Israel against Iran’s huge ICBM attack last month has still not come. Biden/Harris have called for Netanyahu to hold off (until after the election?) and have called for limits on possible targets. No oil production or refineries can be hit. Nuclear facilities are all off limits.

Prime Minister Netanyahu has seriously been trying to work with the White House, but too many parameters have been set on how to conduct this war. Too many secrets have been leaked by the administration to the press. Israel has been very concerned, especially now, as this seems to have happened again. Quietly, secretly over the weekend, classified Pentagon information concerning the strategic and tactical plans against Iran were leaked to CNN and other mainstream media outlets. They have since been circulated on Telegram and other social media. The authenticity of the documents from October 15 and October 16 was confirmed. They contained vital information on air strikes against Iran sourced to the National Security Agency. Supposedly, this will be examined by the FBI.

This has happened multiple times, in the Obama administration and in the Biden administration. If American is Israel’s friend, who needs more enemies? It is further isolating this tiny country, forcing the people – the government, the military and the general citizenry – to rely on G-d alone.

Enough of the bad news, now for the good. We received the test results and John is free and clear of cancer. Woohoo! Baruch HaShem!!! He’s officially cured! This is amazing! I’ve years ago he was given little to no chance. It was a long battle, but he is cured! Yaaaaay!

The next bit of news is that we made plans quite some time ago to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary in Italy. We leave Tuesday night and we will rent a car, and go from Milan/Lake Como in the North to Mantua, Venice, Ravenna, Florence,Pitigliano, Siena, Arezzo, SanGrimignano, through Tuscany to Luca, Assisi, Pompey/Herculaneum, the Amalfi Coast, Naples and Rome. Great art, beautiful scenery, an opera in Florence, gondola ride with serenade, stops to see friends, the food!! Archaeological wonders I’ve studied and taught… it will be amazing. We’re pulling out all the stops. We ‘ll be gone for three weeks.

I’ll be keeping up with the news from time to time. If anything major occurs that you might not hear, I shall let you know. For the time being, it’s ciao, ciao!

POSTSCRIPT, 30 minutes later. News updates:

Two barrages of missiles were fired this morning by Hizbulla from Lebanon targeting Israeli civilians. In Akko, a rocket directly hit a vehicle, critically wounding a man who later succumbed to his injuries. The attack left at least nine others wounded with varying degrees of injuries.

In Kiryat Atta, a 28 year old man was seriously injured by shrapnel from a direct rocket impact, while a man and a woman in their 40s sustained injuries from the same blast. Several individuals have been treated by paramedics for anxiety. Over 60 rockets at a time were launched towards Akko, Haifa, the Haifa suburbs and Uoper Galilee.

Yesterday, a man in his 50s was killed in Akko by falling shrapnel.

A Not-so-Subtle Irony. October 18,2024 Day 378

It started off without much joy. Sukkot is the feast of tabernacles or booths. It is a time of great joy and festivities. Booths are set up in the yards, balconies and sidewalks, and Jewish people eat meals and spend time with guests in the sukkah. The sobriety of the high holidays gives way to sheer delight – usually. Every year for decades we have decorated our sukkah meticulously. I usually spend weeks going over my fall menus and guest list.

This year is different. We just got back from the US; my husband is now undergoing his last post-cancer checks (hallelujah it’s been 5 years and we are thanking G-d in advance for good reports); John and I leave for vacation (more on that later) on Tuesday and frankly, who wants the hassle of building and decorating a sukkah when missiles and shrapnel are raining down?

Whether it was G-d or not, there is an incredible irony in the fact that last year Sukkot ended with the 7 October (on the Hebrew calendar) massacre by Hamas. Exactly one year later, on the first day of Sukkot, there was a shootout between the IDF and five unknown terrorists. The brigade just happened to be clearing out explosives ‘in the field’ when the five were spotted. A shootout ensued.

It was a heated battle in the middle of the Tel Sultan neighborhood of Rafa in Gaza. It seemed to last forever. The troops called for additional backup. A nineteen year old soldier, who had only been in the army for nine months took a shot and critically injured the leader. A drone was flown in by the IDF. It filmed a very wounded man, seemingly missing his right had, sitting on a sofa. (Hersh had his right hand shot off by a Hamas terrorist when he was abducted) The suffering terrorist tried to pick up a stick and throw it at the drone. He lifted his head slightly and was shot by the 19 year old soldier.

Shortly thereafter, a tank arrived blasting the building, killing the other Hamas fighters in the rubble. Upon inspection, the leader of the group that was shot turned out to be Yahya Sinwar himself. He was above ground, a rarity, and it was sheer coincidence that he was killed.

Not only that, but two terrorists were his bodyguards. Official identification was found on them. It included all their info and photos. Their jobs were listed as UNRWA teachers. You just cannot make this stuff up. Total irony. In Hebrew we call it hippukh.

But wait, there’s more! The Tel Sultan neighborhood lies nearly adjacent to the Philadelphi Corridor. It’s less than 1/2 mile away. International pressure was put on the Prime Minister to leave it alone. The Corridor forms the boundary between Gaza and Egypt. The IDF uncovered over 50 tunnels underground leading from Gaza into Egypt. Some were wide enough to drive large trucks through. Obviously these tunnels were used for smuggling both ways and for other nefarious purposes. The Philadelphi is now under Israeli control .

The Bislam Brigade of the 828 Battalion was the one that shot and later discovered the identity of Mr. Evil. This was the same infantry division that accidentally shot and killed the three escaped hostages , thinking they were terrorists.

Yahya Sinwar’s finding by sheer chance above ground was ironic. A flip. He seldom came out of the tunnel, and when he does reports say he disguised himself as a woman. Where he was found carries so much hippukh and symbolism. For months we heard “All eyes on Rafa.” A chant meaning IDF genocide against innocent Palestinian civilians. The international community, especially the Biden administration, pressured Israel to not go into that particular city. Kamala Harris insisted that to enter Rafah would be “a huge mistake.” She had “intently studied the maps to come to this conclusion.”

We got the news just at sunset. It flashed as an important news update on my phone. Within seconds we heard cheers erupt throughout the neighborhood. Someone was blowing a shofar. Our neighbors, Gia and Yanna came over and told us to quickly drive up to Rabin Circle the next neighborhood over.

It was amazing. People waving flags: Israeli flags, flags from the IDF units. Cars honking, emblazoned with Israeli flags, people sticking their heads out of the windows. Music was blaring from a loudspeaker. And throngs lined the circle and streets. There was no handing out of sweets or shooting off fireworks. There was no rock throwing or flag burning. It was peaceful and joyous. People were singing patriotic songs and praises to G-d. It was absolutely glorious. An enemy had been vanquished, a monster eliminated. The Hamas machine was crumbling.

Yahya Sinwar, The Butcher of Khan Younis” was the evil mastermind behind the attack on Israel last Sukkot.

So much irony. Check out the date….

The leader of Hamas oversaw both its political and military units since 2017. He was the one who directed the rocket strikes, tunnel system, infiltrationinto Israel, murders of entire families, rapes, tortures and kidnappings. In the 1990s, Sinwar got his start planning and executing lone wolf suicide bombings throughout Israel. He was the one responsible for the 2006 kidnapping of a young IDF soldier, Gilad Shalit.

Sinwar was serving a life sentence in 1988 for the murders of his fellow Palestinians, who he accused of being spies for Israel. He was brutal and maintained strict control within Hamas even from an Israeli prison. While there, he earned two university degrees, became fluent in Hebrew and learned the Israeli culture. After being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2009, he was operated on and treated at an Israeli hospital by Jewish doctors who saved his life. In 2011, he was traded, along with 999 other convicted criminals for the return of Gilad Shalit.

Sinwar got right to work planning the 2014 Gaza War. Between 2018 and 2023 there were numerous rocket barrages from Gaza into Israel. Each time a cease fire was declared. Each time Hamas broke the ceasefire. Sinwar planned the incendiary devices attached to balloon’s which sailed from Gaza and burned large swaths of land from Gaza to Jerusalem in 2018-2020. Using international funds earmarked for humanitarian aid, Sinwar collaborated with UNRWA staff to train children from kindergarten up to be ‘resistance fighters’ against the imperialist enemy, Israel.

It has come out that Sinwar was actually in the tunnel with the six murdered hostages (including American, Hersh Goldberg-Polin) who were held in Rafah. He had been using them as human shields. When the head of Hamas sensed the IDF closing in on him in the tunnel, he ordered the starved and tortured captives shot point blank in the head, but not without a struggle first. Sinwar’s DNA was identified along with the blood of the hostages in the underground tunnel. The other terrorists that killed the hostages were identified and eliminated two weeks ago.

In a press conference last night, Netanyahu offered a reward and complete immunity with passage out of Gaza to anyone holding a hostage who would give them up. Israel Katz, the Foreign Minister stated that the death of Sinwar creates a unique opportunity for quickly freeing the hostages and establishing a Gaza free from Hamas and ultimately, Iranian control. A Sukkot miracle indeed!!!

It is crucial now, that in this in-between time (there are 8 days of the holiday. The first and last are major feast days with no work done like on Shabbat. The middle days are called kohl ha moed) we pray fervently for their release. It is a precarious time when anything can happen, both horrific and terrific. Please pray!

In the meantime, we are overjoyed that this evil man is gone. That he can terrorize Israel and the world no more.

There’s a Whole Lotta Shaking Going On 16 October, 2024

Our flight out of Israel was once again delayed last week due to missiles and drones from Lebanon. We were to leave on Saturday, but spent most of the day running to the safe room. We had many barrages of missiles in villages and towns surrounding from the border of Lebanon to just below Haifa and Zikron Yaakov. It was reported that over 600 were fired just on Saturday! Over 80 were reported in the Karmi’el area, with two apartment buildings getting a direct hit. Thank goodness the residents were in their mammad. I bet you didn’t hear any of that…

There was no immediate siren, but after filming I ran to our safe room
Not to be flippant, but we started a little game of a wee shot of scotch each time in the mammad…. to stiffen the nerves a bit.

While we were gone there was a constant stream of missiles, shot in volleys of 24-60 coming over the Lebanese border. Our town saw more direct hits. Thank G-d, no one was killed or severely injured. My friends, Karen and Eli, were visiting family in Arizona when a missile fell just outside their home. The alarm sounded. A family raced out of their car to a sheltered spot just as the missile hit the car in front of them, completely destroying it. It also struck an outdoor “closet” that held transformers which was just below our friends’ garden. There was quite a bit of damage: to the garden, the patio, Eli’s model train set and mini Israel. The glass walls of their brand new sunroom also received extensive damage.

Filmed by their daughter and son-in-law

Most of the friends and family back in America were of two completely diverse mindsets. There were those who avoided all talk of war and what was happening here. I totally get that. They are afraid for us and probably think we are nuts for having chosen to live in Israel. But that is my assumption. The other group knew and could only persuade us to stay. To move back. They also probably thought we are crazy, but this is our home now. Also, I tried to watch international news each night in our hotel room. There was no mention of Israel or Hizbulla or Gaza or Iran. Zilch. Nada. Radio silence. Nothing at all. Just a gaping hole….

We spent Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Hebrew calendar, a day of fasting and prayer and repentance, in Fairfax, VA. I was afraid to go to Chabad for fear of a domestic terror attack. Something I’m not afraid of in Israel. But in Israel, it was a different day. Instead of keeping the radio, TV and phones off, the citizens were instructed to have them on. If there was an attack in their area, the alert would sound so people could take cover. There was no programming, only a “silent wave “ when a missile launch had been detected for that vicinity. In every synagogue, there was be one person who stayed updated by telephone during prayers for everyone else’s safety. And on that day, sadly, there were hundreds of missiles that were shot by Hizbulla.

A friend volunteered to pick us up at the airport a few days ago. He left under heavy fire, and told us the adventurous story of his drive down. The sirens sounded three separate times. The first two times, he stopped the car on the side of the freeway and got into a ditch, hands overnight his head. Everyone did the same. The third time he said, “Screw it!” and just kept driving. It was completely quiet for the rest of the evening once we were picked up.

Then there is the story of Shalev, a young mother of a toddler and newborn who was driving on the freeway when the sirens sounded. She opened the door but became paralyzed with fear because she didn’t know how to get both babies out of their car seats in time or how to protect them. Suddenly, a car with two middle aged Israeli men stopped behind her. Without hesitation, each grabbed a child and dove into the ditch next to the road, shielding the precious cargo from harm with their own bodies.

On X, formerly Twitter, Kamala posted an outright falsehood.

In fact, last month the fighting in Gaza was paused so Israel could bring in over 72,000 doses of the polio vaccine to protect the children from an imminent outbreak. Too much food is being flooded by truckloads into Gaza. Hamas is still taking control of the trucks and shooting civilians who try to get to it. They then sell it at inflated prices to the innocents, and use it as leverage for people to fight and recruit new terrorists.

Another story you might not have heard of is that of a brave Palestinian woman named Islam Hijazy, a mother of two beautiful children and volunteer with the humanitarian organization, Heal Palestine. When Hamas operatives heard of the work she was ding and all the funds coming into Gaza, they asked her to do one simple thing for the resistance: hand over all the funds to Hamas. She flatly refused, insisting that all the aid go to the civilians. Hamas didn’t like her answer so much so the terrorists shot 90 bullets into her car, killing her. They even filmed themselves doing it to be a warning to others. Hijazy didn’t have a chance.

Also in New York Times headline news yesterday (the only ‘news’ I could find about Israel, more outright lies. And this morning they doubled down. Let’s add more fuel to the fire, shall we??? Basically the article accused IDF soldiers of hunting down and shooting innocent Palestinian children and of using them as human shields.

Today our day started with our wake-up call at 6:12 of crashing booms just to the south of us. That after red alerts in our area (but no sirens in our city) at 2:44 am and then again at 3:20am. More thunderous booms that shake the house even though the missiles are being intercepted a couple miles away. We ran to the shelter three times. Lots of missiles. Many are not being intercepted and are hitting properties as well as open spaces. Several people in our city were injured and evacuated to hospital, and I am still waiting for an update as to how many and their condition. We are beginning to wonder if our Iron Dome batteries are beginning to run out?

Even the animals are feeling the effect. Our little doggie, Haggis, know that when the siren sounds, he automatically runs to the safe room, tail tucked between his legs. He slinks around now and won’t leave our sides. He is even reticent to go outside. And the parrot across the street has stopped singing and talking – he used to entertain the neighborhood incessantly. Cats are hiding. They used to have free roam of the streets. And when the alarm sounds, flocks of birds (pigeons, other birds) scatter nervously.

We’ve learned that the small helicopters that fly over our house outfitted with a stretcher at each side are carrying away wounded soldiers from the Lebanese front to Haifa hospitals. We pray for all those wounded to have complete and miraculous recoveries. It’s another sound I’ve come to dread….

One last and important message: to ROSE fromBUFFALO. The amazingly wonderful woman and her husband we met in the Rome airport. If you are reading this, please keep in touch!! I’d love to keep in contact with you personally. And I didn’t get your husband’s name, but we talked for quite some time while you were off shopping. My email is tamar.dunbar@gmail.com. I do hope to hear from you. John and I are praying fervently for both our countries….

It Came in With a Bang Day 362. 4 October, 2024

For the Jewish people, New Year’s Eve is not brought in with parties, balloons, champagne toasts and fireworks….well, not usually this year it was different.

I decided at the last minute to make a little Rosh haShannah Seder and meal in thanksgiving of the great miracle the previous night. Iran launched 180-200 intercontinental ballistic missiles directly at U.S., and none fell into a populated area. Many were intercepted. Many fell into the desert. The only person killed was an escaped Hamasnik from Gaza that was walking the streets in Jericho. The fact that there were no more casualties was miraculous.

Still, there was a definite pall over the holidays. Usually, the neighbors are out wishing everyone a sweet new year, people are visiting friends and families with large gift baskets of fruit and wine and sweets and flowers. Usually people are happy and the street is lined with the cars of family members who traveled to be with their parents or grandparents. It’s a time of large family gatherings here.

The high holy days, or days of awe are also a holy time, when Jewish people attend synagogue (like many Christians go to church on Christmas and Easter). Rosh haShannah is a day when G-d in all His glory and splendor is crowned King of the Universe, King of Kings of Kings. He is sovereign and reigns supreme. It is a day when sins are confessed and forgiveness is requested both from G-d and from those we have personally wronged.

This year, everyone was instructed to stay close to a protected area. No large gatherings outdoors or indoors. Many congregations chose to split up and have smaller minyanim in community centers, private homes and the like. Even though the majority of the people turn off phones, radios, and televisions during the holiday, this year we were instructed to be able to hear the instructions of Home Front Command just in case anything was happening.

The day started off somberly. So many soldiers and reservists who had been fighting in Gaza or in Judaea and Samaria were looking forward to a short leave to go home for the holidays. Four more battalions were called up on Wednesday to serve on the Northern border. We knew there would boots on the ground imminently, but it was not something that was publicized in the news or on social media.

When I first moved here and when Max went into the army, the parents were instructed to never put down in writing on social media troop movements. “My son’s unit is being moved from central Israel to the Gaza border” for example. Or “I was driving on the highway today and saw about 50 tanks on Rte 6 heading North tying up traffic.” Or “My daughter told me hospitals are preparing for a large influx of patients because troops will be moving in.” No.No.No. We do not give up any information that could compromise our position or fall into enemy hands and be used against us. I was given these instructions repeatedly.

So it was understandable when my neighbors and landlady and other people I knew were absolutely irate at the United States. At a press conference on Wednesday, Jake Sullivan, one of the president’s top advisors leaked that the Israeli response would be limited. That the army was going into Lebanon on a limited scale. Very limited troops only 4 kilometers into the very Southeastern tip. It would be just to clear out the villages there of Hizbulla operatives to remove the threat.

Is it any wonder or surprise that just at sunrise yesterday morning, 8 of our beautiful young men walked right into an ambush and were killed? And that over 30 were evacuated to the nearest hospitals for immediate treatment?

It was indeed a sad morning. But it grew more and more – I can’t even begin to find the words…exasperating? Maddening? Suspenseful? John and I were not afraid, but all day the missiles were being lobbed across the border by Hizbulla. We would listen as the red alert would go off on my phone and we would see where the next volley was headed…. Tiberias, Migdal, Kibbuts Degania, Ein Gev, Genesseret, Kfar Nahum, Korazin; Kiryat Atta, Acco, Kiryat Motzkin, Ein ha Mifratz, Kiryat Biyalik; Kfar Vradim, Terence, Madj Al Krum, Karmi’el, Shorashim…. On and on it went all through Thursday and all through Friday….and then a lull from about 2-6am this morning. New Year’s has definitely started off with a lot of fireworks and bangs.

On Wednesday, I would prepare dinner and pack for our trip until a siren came. Then I would get under a protected space. The dangerous part is falling shrapnel, so it’s pretty important to stay somewhere that your head is covered by thick, reinforced concrete, like an inside doorway or a stairwell, if there’s no time to run to a safe room. Yesterday I did not walk to synagogue. I stayed home and prayed out of my prayer book for the holidays. Later in the afternoon I did take a couple videos of incoming, but they can be rather frightening to those who are not used to this. So I will not post those. If you want me to send Amy directly, DM me…

After hearing the siren and getting an all clear, I’d go out and take photos. Some missiles were shot down right over our heads. The local police monitored the streets continually in their patrol cars. And a text would go out from the city to warn of falling shrapnel. We were instructed to call a certain number if we saw any shrapnel or unexploded rocket parts. Do not go near them as they can be deadly. Even the mayor was out, driving around and checking on people.

We were awakened a little after 6 this morning to red alerts and the volleys of missiles – usually in groups of 10-20 have been coming over throughout the day. I’ve had to stop this writing three times already to enter into our safe room. It’s exhausting physically and mentally.

You can hear the thuds at the vey end as more missiles are taken out in the distance

So, the UN still has not condemned Iran for the massive barrage. Te international community its says nothing about the pounding we are getting. We all say, that at Ramadan, Israel was urged to pause the fighting in Gaza so the Muslims could have their holy time. We complied, like idiots. But at the Jewish holy days? Not a word. We get pounded even harder. There is no call for Hamas, Hizbulla, Iran or any of the terror proxies to cease fire. It’s decidedly lopsided.

And then, we are really, really mad. At our own government. At the US administration. At Iran. Netanyahu made a statement on Tuesday that Israel would respond to Iran’s attack Wednesday night proportionally and soon. The US quickly got involved setting out lists of what we cannot strike: oil fields, refineries, storage facilities, manufacturing facilities, their population centers (we never go after innocent civilians), and their nuclear facilities.

Both Biden and Harris publically stated that Israel has a right to defend itself. Israel has a right, bla bla bla. To quote from yesterday’s Wall Street Journal:

After Tuesday’s missile attack, he (Biden) is already telling Israel the targets it cannot hit in self-defense. Asked Wednesday if he’d support an Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities, the President said, “The answer is no.” This is extraordinary. Even before he talks with Mr. Netanyahu, the President engages in public lobbying aimed at blocking a sovereign state and American ally from deciding on its own what is the best response to a direct military attack on its territory.

Iran attacked Israel for the second time in six months, it Mr. Biden tells Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khameni that the U.S. will help the regime protect its most prized and threatening military asset….Mr. Biden doesn’t even wait to keep Iran guessing.

If Mr. Biden won’t take this opportunity to destroy Iran’s nuclear program, the least he can do is not stop Israel from doing the job for its own self-preservation.

Kamala Harris, on the campaign trail, yesterday (Rosh haShannah) said that she would withhold the delivery of arms to Israel. She does not support any further acts of (Israeli) agression. She is burdening us with what is to be.

On another note, John went to the bank a little while ago to use the ATM and get some money for the trip. We had a siren in our neighborhood and I saw the paths and expected targets of the 14 missiles. So they were headed for my immediate neighborhood. Marc and I ran into the saferoom, heard the booms. I waited 2 minutes and then went out. John came back a few minutes later. I asked him where he was when the siren went off. He didn’t have one. He was walking between two buildings downtown when he heard and felt the booms. He saw the puffs. Everyone that was downtown just continued about their business. Most things were closed today. But there were still people out and about going. It’s just all so weird!!!

The amazing thing is how exact the pinpointed warnings are. Our bank is just 2 miles away from our neighborhood, yet we had sirens but they did not. The technology is absolutely incredible. The precision!

The other good news is that the IDF soldiers rescued a Yazidi young woman in Gaza earlier this week.Fawzia Sido was captured in Iraq by ISIS at age 11, ripped away from her family, and sold to a Palestinian jihadist as a sex slave. She was resold later that year to a man in Gaza (who was a Hamas civilian terrorist) and held there against her will for 10 years as a sex slave. After eliminating her host/terrorist, she was taken to Israel for evaluation at a medical center. The 21 year old was escorted back to her home country where she was reunited with her family on Wednesday. Hopefully the rest of our 101 captives will also be rescued soon.

For the third time since I began writing this… it’s really getting old. We had 4 more missiles intercepted and crash right overhead. So what happens if you are in the bathroom? It’s a question asked frequently here. Showers last about 3 minutes, because one never knows…. Me? I just stay where I am. When it’s my time, it’s my time. But I’m not trying to rush down marble stairs dripping wet wrapped in a towel. Nope. Just not gonna do it. TMI-

As you can see, it’s back to snaxxxx and I’m really mad about that, too. Darn you, terrorists! I’ll diet in November….

We are almost packed and are planning on leaving tomorrow night. With a hugely long layover somewhere in Italy. I just pray we will be able to get out. And no, we will be returning right after Yom Kippur. My husband has his last scans and tests. He will be cancer free 5 years now. From Stage 3.5+ to now. It’s nothing short of miraculous, and definitely something to Hallelujah about!!

Hopefully, nothing eventful will happen over the next week. If it does, we will be on top of the news at all times. I hope I don’t have to do a blog post, but if there is anything going on, I have my neighbors and friends to keep me posted. There goes four more booms. Thud. Thud. Thud. Thud. House shakes. Windows rattle. It off in the distance, so…and one last thud for good measure. Prayers no one is hurt…

A Great Miracle Happened Here 1 October,2024

My next door neighbor recorded this last night

Normally I’d be cooking up a storm for a crowd because tonight marks the beginning of the High Holy Day period. Rosh haShannah is a time of new beginnings, usually a time to celebrate and pray for G-d’s blessings for the coming year.

The year started absolutely horrifically as you know. We have been living under the threat of rocket fire and the loss of soldiers. We have seen the video of the rapes, the bombings, the torture and kidnappings and massacre. We have searched for missing friends. We have cried with the testimony of the returned hostages and collectively prayed for the release of those still held captive.

This past week has been nothing short of miraculous. Thanks to Israeli intelligence, planning, cunning, and daring, the IDF took out all three top tiers of Hizbulla leadership in Lebanon. I thank G-d for pulling g it all together with perfect timing, perfect intensity, and perfect ability for it all to come together.

Hassan Nasrallah was a very evil man, despite how the obituaries are portraying him. He was the mastermind behind the attack of the Beirut US army base in 1983 that killed 243 American servicemen and wounded scores of others. He was the planner of the Buenos Aeries bombing of the 1994 Jewish Community Center killing 85, wounding over 300 – as well as the Israeli Embassy bombing 2 years prior. Nasrallah, the head of Hizbulla, brought once-prosperous Lebanon down to an impoverished country. He diverted funds meant for the people and for infrastructure and put that into his war machine.

There were plans to pour over the border through underground tunnels and by sea into Israel this Rosh haShannah. The Iranian proxy group had plans to do the same type of massacre that was done in Gaza. It was called Galilee Overthrow. The Ayatollah of Iran, Khameni, vowed swift justice upon Israel for the assassination of Nasrallah.

Yesterday, missiles had been fired steadily throughout the day at Northern Israel. Our ground troops had moved in and were clearing out all the weapons storage and tunnel shafts. Hidden launch pads were being destroyed. We didn’t have more than two sirens in our neighborhood, but could hear the continuous bombing in the distance.

It was really strange. I don’t know if it was me, if I was imagining it, or if it was real, but all day long into the early evening, I would hear shofar blasts. During the time of the holy days, and the entire month previous, it is customary for the shofar, the ram’s horn to be blown. But over the past nine years, no matter how hard I listened, I rarely experienced this powerful call to awaken the spirit. But yesterday, I would hear loud bursts, then later short staccato blasts, then long, long drawn out shofar wails. It was the oddest thing.

Last night, shortly after dinner, we got word that Iran was planning something, maybe for later in the night. Stay near a shelter. Listen to the messages of home front command. Nothing else. OK.

Confession: when I was younger I used to smoke cigarettes. At times of extreme stress, I get the pressing urge to go buy a pack of cigs. This time, no. But it would be nice to have some popcorn while we waited. And if we had to wait through Saturday (would our flights be cancelled?), it would be great to have some snacks. Lots and lots of crunchy snacks.

So, I sent John to the store to buy snacks and went upstairs. Within 3 minutes of his leaving my whole screen started lighting up like never before. It wouldn’t stop. Dimona!!!!athey are after the nuclear plant! Tel Aviv!!! Jerusalem!!!!Beersheva!!! I started hearing sirens in the far distance so ran out on the mirpesset (our rooftop patio) to see what was going on….

It looked like an alien invasion! Seriously like something out of a sci-fi movie. Unbelievable. They were coarsing through the sky like a pack of mad hornets, but no sounds. All heading south. I didn’t see one Iron Dome interception as we usually do.

OK. So at that point, I was a bit jumpy because I didn’t know what was coming next. I ran inside and sent an urgent prayer alert to my three friends back in the States. “It has begun. Please pray for us. We are under attack.” We only had about a three minute warning. Marc, who lives with us, quickly made tracks for the saferoom. I told him to look out the window first. His jaw just dropped, mouth gaping open. Then the multiple pound, resounding booms echoing through the valleys, bouncing off the mountains. And the faint red glow miles to the south.

Then all was quiet. Whew!! That was a close one. My battery was at 3%, so I plugged in my phone (didn’t even think about the emergency power pack) and went out on the balcony. All was incredibly silent except for the neighborhood children excitedly speaking to each other next door. I began to pray and thank G-d loudly for His protection. Then I began to sing. Sing!! sing!! With my frog voice croaking loudly hymns of thanks and praise.

Then it started up again. They came by the hundreds. Like a meteor shower. Sailing past from north to south over our heads. I heard the alarm on my phone as it went off and wouldn’t stop. This was the big one. It was headed for the population centers of central Israel. I’m really trying to describe, but I just ant find the words. It was powerful. It was horrific. It was beautiful. I was not afraid. Somehow, I knew G-d would protect us and I just prayed. Loudly.

Craaaaaap!!!, John!!! Where was John??? Why did I so selfishly send him to the store? Was he still there? Did he hear and see what was going on above us in the night sky? Was he, by now, on his way back home???

Then the lights. Orange red glows coming from the South. The thuds. The ground shaking and convulsing. The booms. It was literally a wall of blasts and shockwaves that rocked the entire country. All at once, one after the other. Holy cow!!! Then silence. My neighbors and friends all started sending each other texts. “You OK? “ “Will there be more?” “Is everyone safe?” “Do you need anything?” “Hey, I got some great videos! “Can we come out of the shelters? I think we should all stay inside our safe rooms for the night.”

Watch until the very end! (Eva was excited and held her phone the wrong way, but-)

The videos and news started getting posted online at a rapid clip. Lots of spectacular “fireworks.” Our very good friends were enroute to celebrate the holidays with their kids and grandkids in Kfar Sava. They had to pull over on the side of the road as the sirens wailed. It was incredibly frightening and real for them.

John returned just a few minutes after it all went down, laden with bags of popcorn and pretzels and chips and crackers. There were about six people in the grocery store still doing their holiday shopping. As there were no sirens, no one seemed phased. An IDF soldier was standing near the bomb shelter smoking a cigarette when he left the store. That was all. He was completely unaware that anything had happened. We drive an old car that lunges, so he didn’t notice if there were thuds or rumbles.

Miraculously, there was only one fatality. A refugee from Gaza, a Palestinian man was hit by a falling missile. Several people had to be treated for minor injuries as they fell rushing to a protected area. More than a few were treated for shock and anxiety. Several windows were blown out near the desert. A restaurant in Tel Aviv was hit by falling shrapnel.

Other than that, no military bases were hit and rendered inoperable. Ben Gurion Airport closed for about an hour, then re-opened. It was reported that 181 intercontinental ballistic missiles were launched from various sites across Iran, coming at Israel in waves. It took only 12 minutes, average for them to reach their intended targets. The later report has been revised to upwards of 400 missiles I three separate waves.

From our friend, “the general:” The dimensions and mass of the ballistic missiles are built in such a way that even if the explosive warhead is eliminated during interception, ore 5an half a metric ton of various burning components such as metal, engine, fuel tank, and reinforced structures still remain in an altered trajectory. This usually results in substantial destruction and collateral damage upon impact. “

Basically, it comes down to this. The Chanukah message. “A great miracle happened here.” Ness gadol haya po.” נס גדול היה פה!

So we celebrate His miraculous protection. This incredible miracle. Were the missiles all intercepted? The US said they shot down 12. Jordan intercepted 37. And Iron Dome? David’s Sling? So far I have heard no word. It doesn’t matter. We dodged a big one. It’s incredible.

I was not going to do any cooking. We are still in the major grieving period for John’s father’s passing. We leave Saturday night, right after Shabbat. With this huuuuuuge long layover in Italy. We will arrive in DC Sunday night. Extended family members and friends are begging us to stay. To move back to the US. We are incredulous. There is no way we will leave this country at this time. It is a Land of Miracles and we are witnesses to history.

I got up early to shop and cook for the rest of the weekend. John and I will have a small celebratory Rosh Hashanah Seder with all the symbolic foods. We will pray for a better year. May our enemies be defeated. May we enjoy new life (one of our daughters is expecting again!) May we be the head and not the tail. May we enjoy a year of G-d’s blessings and abundance. May it be a sweet year of only good news. May any bad judgements, decrees or laws against us be nullified. May all those who seek to harm us flee. May our names be inscribed in the Book of Life for 5785.

On the Cusp: A New Year. 1 October, 2024

For most here in Israel, and for Jewish people around the world, we stand at the cusp of a new year. The past year, 5784, is coming to an end. And what a year it has been!

My husband and I have welcomed two beautiful new grandchildren into our family and have been present to congratulate our son on his graduation from university. We have been able to travel to Florida for a very short family reunion: it was the first time in almost 15 years that all of our children, their spouses, and our six grandchildren were able to be together for quality time. It was the first time several of us had the opportunity to meet one another. This past year saw the addition of new friends and new opportunities.

However, it has also been a horrific year fraught with the brutal invasion of Hamas terrorists into Israel, butchering, raping, burning and pillaging the land to the South of us. Over 240 were taken captive into Gaza terror tunnels: men, women, children, even babies, 2 of whom are still there today. Israel entered into a war being fought on five fronts.

John and I did what little we could at first – preparing meals for the troops; taking up basic necessities for those who left everything to defend their country; keeping a written log of events as they transpired; and helping the IDF troops receive the necessary helmets and ceramic vests they were lacking. We attended funerals and comforted the mourners. We mourned the fallen soldiers in our community…five so far. And we have also attended weddings. And engagement parties. And I’ve known so many women who have had new babies.

I’ve seen the determination and resilience of a people who value the gift of life this year. People who have left their homes and families to fight for their survival. There is a saying here….”My dentist has a secret life as a tank commander. My son’s teacher is a paramedic. Our baker has another job as a border patrol officer. And my daughter’s ballet instructor is a paratrooper.”

Our hotels, once full with visitors and tourists are stuffed to the brim with displaced families. Many of our national parks are closed due to danger of attack. Our tourist destination, once vibrant with pilgrims and vacationers now stand empty. Businesses have shuttered due to lack of customers. Yet, hopefulness remains in the air. Tomorrow. Next year….

Families have been wrenched apart as fathers are called up to serve in the Reserves. They leave behind their young children and often wives who must pick up the slack of their own work, a family business, the house work and raising the kids. It definitely takes a toll emotionally and psychologically. Yet the people are strong. Whenever someone can lend a hand, they are quick to do so. With the help of G-d, we are holding each other up.

This has been a year of prayer… for our government, our loved ones, the hostages, the soldiers, those who mourn, for our safety and our victory in eradicating evil. Many who have never lifted their hands heavenward, made a challah, studied Scripture, lit candles, attended religious services, recited Psalms, are doing so now. There is a definite turn towards the Divine. This has been a year of increased spirituality and faith.

This past year, I have tried to write the facts of what is happening in this part of the world – to counter all the misinformation and propaganda. I have also written from my personal experience. I want you to be able to experience what we are going through as if you were here with me. Perhaps give you a different perspective.

I have been thankful for my husband’s sense of humor. He is always able to de-fuse even the most tense of situations (we have been hearing the Iron Dome take out Hizbulla missiles fairly close to us all morning and he is making fun of my jumpiness). He makes fun of our enemies ineptness as well as my own. His comedic impressions and wisecracks are always welcome.Nothing is serious. Nothing is too sacred to make fun of.

We have made new friends. And we have lost friends along the way who have disagreed with us politically or religiously. But time is way too short to hold grudges or to harbor ill will. For Jewish people, this marks a time of introspection, of getting rid of unforgiveness, of being aware or one’s faults and flaws. It is a time to resolve to do better. To be a better, more loving, more caring human being. And to leave the rest up to G-d. We can all learn from that.

At the time of this writing, I look on the devastation wreaked by Hurricane Helene over the people of North Carolina and the Southeastern US. It, too is horrific. A war zone, as one would say. My heart and my prayers go out to them. I read that Iran is putting together a very nice surprise missile for us in the foreseeable future. And I see the uncertainty in the world.

My prayer is that this coming year will be a time of renewed faith and hope. I pray that the captives will be released, the wars and natural disasters will come to an end. I pray it will be a year of healing – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. O Lord, hear us. Have mercy on us. Heal us. Keep us close.

It’s Our Turn Now, Baby! War Stories. Day 359. 29 September, 2024

I can’t keep these days straight anymore.

So much happens in such a compact part of time. And our sleep has been fitful at best. It’s our turn now. Last I wrote, was Thursday night.

I guess the Hizbulla terrorists were a bit upset, maybe even hoppin mad because we short circuited some 1500+ of their upper eschelon with exploding beepers and walkie-talkies. Then Thursday evening the Israeli Air Force started taking out their rocket launch pads. Seems the buggers had an inordinate amount of missiles, but a limited number of launchers. We saw a weakness and went after it.

Thursday night we got our first real barrage up North in our neck of the woods….. like 20-40 missiles headed straight for our area. Then scattershot all over the Upper and Lower Galilee in heavy salvos all through the night. We have an Iron Dome on the mountain adjacent ours, so the anti-missile missiles go right over our house. At one time they were intercepting missiles directly overhead. Usually our siren goes off when there is danger (we have 28 seconds, but….). I ran downstairs and out of the way of the very real threat of falling shrapnel. I did get some nice video though….

I didn’t realize the missiles would be exploding directly overhead. I skedaddled just at the loudest house-shaking booms happened. Safe room, here we come!

It continued like that through Friday. It’s pretty amazing. No red alert. Clean the bathroom. Then, red alert on our phone, mammad (safe room) BOOMS! All clear. Change the sheets. sirens. Mammad. CRASH! BOOMS! All clear. Do a little gardening. Mammad. Fix dinner. Mammad.

A couple friends from California called last night and asked if I was totally afraid? No. Not at all. Seriously. I have this incredible simplicity to believe Scripture. G-d said repeatedly that he would take care of us. Protect us. Defend us. Rescue us. Deliverer. Call me naive, but He said, not me that He is my fortress, my shield, my high tower, that He would hide me under the shadow of His wings. He’s G-d. He said it. Who am I to argue? It’s just easier to believe Him. I try not to be stupid, but….. He said 365 times, “Do not be afraid.” “Fear not, I go before You.” “Take courage for I am with you….”

So, I am not afraid, but stressed out – that’s another story. You see we were supposed to fly out for my father-in-law’s funeral. And we made sure all our kids have flights and hotel. But on Friday afternoon, we got this awful message:

The IAF was busy bombing homes (McMansions) in Lebanon that had been built by Hizbulla to house missiles. The weapons were hidden and stored in homes, and the Iranian proxies paid monthly stipends to their Shi’ite Lebanese terror sympathizers who would cooperate with them. And now they were returning our fire. And Alitalia pulled its service. We were screwed. And mad. And super stressed out.

I know it was Shabbat. I lit the candles and we started our lovely home liturgy and BANG! Mammad.OK. 10 minutes and out. I served the salad and we started the salmon. Siren Mammad. BOOMS! Maybe 16 or so. They sounded really close. Crap. This is just insane. No real danger sensed. Just anger at the stupid inconvenience. John and I try not to use our phones on Shabbat, but this was no ordinary Sabbath. So we spent most of the night trying to find other flights out of Israel. We tried ElAl and its subsidiaries, Arkia and UP to destinations in Europe. 27 hour layover in Amsterdam. 19 hour layover in Paris. Nothing available. All booked. No seats. Finally around 2am we found a flight to London with a layover and connector to DC. Just as we went to buy them, the prices changed to over double!! $7914.00 each way per person for British Air from London to Washington!! Just forget it!

We finally got to sleep around 3 as the excitement had died down, but were awakened shortly before 6am to the wail of sirens and the voice of our red alert “Tseva Adom. Tseva Adom. Tseva Adom.” This is how it would continue all morning every half hour or so until about noon. All over the Upper and Lower Galilee.

WHOA! WHOA! WHOA!!! Let’s back things up a little bit. Back to Friday afternoon. President Netanyahu, who was NOT going to deliver his speech at the UN on Friday, told us all on Wednesday, that at the last minute he had decided to fly to New York with Sarah, his wife. She would go to the Ohel, the grave of the rebbe, to pray, and he would deliver his speech. They were to leave immediately thereafter. We were earnestly praying that he would not be arrested by the ICC or ICJ or even the Biden admin and extradited for trial somewhere. Or worse. We prayed he would not be assassinated, a very real threat.

Minutes after he delivered his address before the UN, we got the news that the underground bunkers in Beirut where Hizbulla kept their top brass were bombed. Supposedly, Nasrallah, head of Hizbulla, resurfaced from his hidey-hole for the first time in two decades to watch Bibi’s speech and then plan their next attacks. We heard the IDF got him. But there was no confirmation on that. It was about 4pm our time.

Max & I started our own back and forth. He’s dead! Max said, “no confirmation.” “We got him!” “You don’t know for sure. Wait and see.” We were watching the news for any info all Friday night. Nasrallah’s daughter showed up to the site and is wailing. Surely that is a sign “Wait and see.” The Syrians and many Lebanese are singing and dancing in the streets. Handing out baklawa and candy. “Mom. It’s not official.” By Saturday, the news was official. For the Shabbat observant, who were not yet privy to the news, death notices went up all over town.

To our neighbors who keep the Sabbath

With praise and thanksgiving to the Blessed Name, we announce the passing of

The evil oppressor Hassan Nasrallah, son of Amalek

Taken by the IAF this Shabbat (the details of the funeral will be given at the end of Shabbat) The people of Israel live!

As it turns out, this was in the planning stages for weeks. When the “bait was taken” – the decision to make the speech was also a diversionary tactic – the ‘Golden Information’ was confirmed. Nasrallah would be in an underground conference room with several high staff members. Just minutes before Bibi’s address, he gave the go-ahead for the attack. The planes were in the air, and just seconds after Bibi wrapped up, the Beirut complex was demolished using 83 tons of bombage (is that even a word?). The bunker busters HAD to take down the underground safety reinforced concrete SKIFF. And they did…

The entire operation was kept absolute secret, which in Israel, is an absolute miracle. The goal being to change the entire landscape of the Middle East and to establish new coalitions. This would, hopefully, usher in a new era of peace. The Iranians and Houthis as well as what’s left of Hizbulla are most likely in absolute confusion and paranoia. Four days of mourning have been declared in Iran and the Ayatollah is now in hiding.

Our own rain of missiles continued here…. As I write this, they are still happening. Only now, we only go to the saferoom when we know the rockets are overhead, not just over the hill or the next town over. It’s absolutely surreal.

Last night, a surface to surface missile was launched by the Houthi rebels deep into Israel. It was intercepted by David’s Sling, but millions of people from south of Tel Aviv all the way to Netanya were sent rushing to their nearest protected area.

Now to the South. Let’s go to Yemen where the Houthi rebels are. Last week they sunk an oil tanker in the Red Sea. The leakage is larger than that from the Exxon Valdez. Greta Thunberg, where are you now??? Besides the environmental disaster, the major shipping lane is closed. This will effect YOUR gas prices if oil tankers from the MidEast are stopped or have to resort to a longer route. As of Thursday, the Houthis fired off two more ICBMs at Israel: one took out a warehouse in Eilat. The other fell near Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. No injuries. Iran was currently mediating negotiations between the Houthis and Iran for advanced anti-ship missiles. This had the potential to dramatically shift the balance of power and heighten risks for US and allied naval operations in and around the Red Sea.

As I am writing this (7pm Sunday 29/9) dozens of Israeli jets -fighters, refueling planes and intelligence, have attacked the Raz Isa and Hodeidah areas of Yemen, blowing up their port, their oil refineries and their power stations as well as communications towers…..

Let’s see what else is happening around here today, shall we? Reports coming directly from Arab news indicate that a helicopter crash (piloted by Mossad agent Eli Kopter again?😉) has killed Mohammad Abdullah Salam Salama. He was the intermediary between Iran and the Houthis. Also aboard, a top IRGC commander. Hmmmmmm…… if I was a terrorist I’d be in a hole somewhere, but it seems there is nowhere left to hide.

Just hours after it was announced that Nasrallah was eliminated, he was replaced by Hassan Khalil Yassin of Hizbulla’s intelligence unit. It was he who was put in charge of locating the hard (defense) and soft (civilian) targets in Israel. It was he who sent us the satellite images of Israel’s North, circling military bases, defense plants, malls, schools and residential areas. Less than two hours after he became the official terror chief in charge, BAM! Eliminated by the IDF.

Oops. Abbas Nilforoushan, deputy commander of the IRGC Al Quds force: gone! In ten days Israel has basically wiped out the entire leadership of Hizbulla. By itself. Without foreign help. Without foreign intelligence that has been withheld unless a Gaza and Hizbulla ceasefire was reached (thank you,Ms. Veep). Former President Trump: Israel will cease to exist within two years? I don’t think so!

It seems Israel has taken out the entire top three tiers of terror leaders.

Back to Israel. Home Front Command has cancelled all school activities until after the Jewish holidays in mid October. Maximum 10 people in an open area. 150 inside an enclosed building, but must be close to a protected area.

Jared Kushner, leader of the Abraham Accords and Trump’s senior adviser in a rare interview on X:

In 1983, Hizbulla killed 241 American military personnel, including 220 marines. In the last six weeks, Israel has eliminated more terrorists from the U.S. wanted list than the US has eliminated in the last 20 years, including those who were responsible for the 1983 attacks.

Anyone who has been calling for a ceasefire in the north is wrong. There is no going back for Israel. They cannot afford now not to finish the job and completely dismantle the arsenal that has been aimed at them. The right move now for America would be to tell Israel to finish the job. It’s long overdue. And it’s only Israel’s fight.

Iran is now fully exposed. The reason why their nuclear facilities have not been destroyed, despite weak air defense systems, is because Hizbulla has been a loaded gun painted at Israel. Iran spent the last forty years building this capability as its deterrent.

President Trump would often say, ‘Iran has never won a war but never lost a negotiation.’ the Islamic Republic’s regime is much tougher when risking Hamas, Hizbulla, Syrian and Houthi lives than when risking their own. Their foolish efforts to assassinate President Trump and hack his campaign reek of desperation and are hardening a large coalition against them.

With Hizbulla and Iran reeling, failing to take full advantage of this opportunity to neutralize the threat is irresponsible.

The world can sleep a little bit more safely tonight

War Stories: The Northern Front Day 355. 25 September,2024

Last night was the first night in the past four nights when we were not awakened at 2am by the sound of the red alert on my phone or the booms of Iron Dome intercepting missiles in our area. One long range missile shot from Lebanon made it as far as the central coast cities from Netanya to Tel Aviv/Jaffa before it got shot down by David’s Sling. The Iranian proxy claimed their target was Mossad HQ in Tel-Aviv.

The Hizbulla launches up north resumed at about 7am, and there have been two barrages in the last eight hours: one large salvo of about 40 shot down over the Tsfat/Rosh Pina vicinity (see cool photos below). Several people were treated for shock and anxiety. A small cottage in an assisted living neighborhood in Tsfat was hit directly by a missile. The tenants were abroad at the time. The other a small volley of 4 missiles right overhead…Misgav, Yodfat, Moreshet, Rakefet.

In the past 24 hours, the Israeli Air Force has attacked Hizbulla targets round the clock. Using 250 jet fighters, nearly 3,000 launch pads, weapons storage facilities, homes housing missiles, military warehouses, ammunition manufacturing sites have been eliminated. All but the top three Hizbulla heads of command have been killed, including their rocket and missiles division commander, Ibrahim Qubasi, killed in an IAF strike on Beirut.

To quote Gabe E., a retired military general in his latest post, “The hard truth is that Hezbollah and its leader, despite suffering significant setbacks, has no intention of surrendering. On the contrary, Hezbollah is now more determined than ever to demonstrate its resilience and ability to strike against Israel, even after thousands of its operatives have been injured along with the recent assassinations of its last two chiefs of staff and top Radwan Force leaders. Hassan Nasrallah is not only driven by a desire for revenge, but also seeks to restore his lost honor – an essential concept in the Middle East. But he has no one to communicate with. In a scene straight out of a bad sitcom, our ‘hero’ finds himself in quite the pickle. With all three of his four military deputies mysteriously killed, his only surviving deputy is MIA, playing hide and seek someplace. But wait! He can’t use his phone because Mossad is listening while at the same time, a guided missile is tracking the number. And the only other communication device he had a bipper[sic], just turned into confetti thanks to an unfortunate encounter with a rogue explosive. His trusty walkie-talkie is gone too. And let’s not even talk about his donkey, who’s currently experiencing a case of explosive diarrhea – more concerned about the loud booms in Beirut’s Damien district than the national crisis at hand. He’s left with only one option: smoke signals! But to whom? Meanwhile Maj. Gen. Hussein Salami, commander in the IRGC is busy conducting a covert operation to find Israeli spies. Little does he know that the real espionage is happening in the form of his own deputies playing hide and seek at a nearby shawarma stand.”

Several of the Israelis we have spoken with feel that Hizbulla has been fairly emasculated in many ways. Even though they constantly boasted of having over 150,000 short and long range precision guided missiles; despite the fact that two months ago they posted satellite images of Israel’s soft and hard targets in the North, their military capabilities have been truncated. This renders them gravely injured, but not completely incapacitated. The terror organization has had its top leaders killed and its communications rendered useless. Yet they are still very dangerous.

A big question now is who else will get involved? The US is sending more troops and the. U.S.S. harry Truman to our rescue. (🤢) Nasrallah is hoping Iran will enter the fight and save their skins. Hizbulla has officially declared all out war on Israel “ in defense of Lebanon and its people.” Last Wednesday, Israeli officials and Western diplomat told left-of-center Axios, that Nasrallah urged the Iranian regime to carry out a revenge attack on Israel in retaliation for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. The answer came back “the timing isn’t right.”

New Iranian President, Mahmoud Pezeshkian, speaking at the UN General Assembly, said that Iran would avoid “Israel’s trap” of escalating the Hizbulla conflict into a broader war. Yet the terror organization is fully funded by and receives its arms and munitions from Iran. The exiled Iranian crown Prince, Rehza Pahlavi, has called for action to overthrow the evil Islamic-controlled theocracy. He is calling on the world to take action while Iran is distracted by events to the south.

In the meantime, it seems as if the ground has been softened by the IAF for the next phase of Operation Northern Arrows to begin- IDF boots on the ground. Two extra battalions have been called up and are fully trained and ready to go in. They know of the massive terror tunnel network (even more extensive than those in Gaza). The IDF is now battle trained and equipped to dismantle those. They understand that the Iranian proxies will be using very powerful Iranian made anti tank missiles and anti ship missiles and RPGs.

Ending this post now, as there is a Zoom meeting being offered to give us strength and build resilience during this time. There are so many programs now in Israel on how to reduce stress levels and navigate this time both individually and with families. Clinics all have 24 hour open help lines to assist people in emotional or mental anxiety or distress. The psychologist will be discussing how to avoid and deal with PTSD. Should be interesting.

We woke up with a tremendous bang on Sunday morning (see previous post) as Hizbulla fired off a salvo of 27 missiles at 06:27. Thank goodness the Iron Dome Aerial Missile Defense System was operational as it took out the “Hell’sBells” right over our house. And then all was fairly quiet until the late afternoon and evening when they struck again.

Yesterday got off to an early morning start as well. It seems we have a new alarm clock – one that actually makes you jump out of bed. During the day, there were 27 separate missile launches from Lebanon, each firing off at least 10 rounds. Several were aimed towards Tsfat, where there is a large army base. The others were targeting warehouse and logistics facilities; Air Force bases; large army bases; Haifa port and defense industry locations. Israel is so tiny that there are soft and hard targets everywhere. You cannot move to a spot that is not near a base or some ‘safe spot.’ Again, thank goodness for Iron Dome.

By nightfall, an additional 180 rounds were aimed throughout the Galilee, Golan, Haifa area and south, striking as far as Samaria (the West Bank). The missiles were also targeting civilians, many being taken out over large Arab population centers. It doesn’t seem to matter if you are Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Druze or other. Hizbulla is indiscriminate.

Before the IDF started their own bombing sorties into Lebanon, flyers were dropped telling all civilians to evacuate. Over 83,000 phone calls and text messages were sent to the citizens of Southern Lebanon. These were all in Arabic as well as radio announcements from the IDF that broke onto the Lebanese airwaves. For the past 24 hours there have been huge traffic jams as people are trying to escape from the south to the northern part of the country. All of the main coastal routes are jammed. Cars began using the opposite freeway lanes as well and created huge blockages for the Lebanese army.

The IAF have conducted over 1300 air strikes on precisely targeted Hizbulla locations that were used to store weapons, rockets, missiles, launchers, drones, and ammunition. Reports have come out with videos (see the latest from Bridget Gabriel) that show the Iranian proxies would offer to build these big beautiful homes for the Shiites living in Lebanon. The mini mansions had retractable roofs and doors from which missiles could be housed and launched. The residents were paid a hefty monthly stipend to house these weapons of destruction within their own homes. I do believe that is an international war crime and humanitarian offense putting civilians in harm’s way.

Israel is finally on the offensive. Many of the top level leaders have been eliminated as attacks are being carried out throughout Lebanon. Communications were disrupted last week. The IDF is releasing video clips of their targeted missile strikes on homes that were being used as weapons storage facilities. After the initial explosion, there are multiple bangs and sparks going off from the secondary explosions. Buildings in Beirut and the Bekaa Valley are also targeted strikes to get top commandos of the IRGC as well as Hizbulla.

Yesterday afternoon, there were several missile rounds fired in our vicinity. I received my red alert warnings on my phone which tell me where the rockets are headed. From the time I receive the alert, there are about 5-10 seconds before they get intercepted (hopefully) by Iron Dome. The sirens sound in the exact location where the missile is expected to land. It’s all algorithms.

Taken from the roof top balcony off our bedroom.

So I was able to go outside and take some videos. Some turned out better than others. In the following video, keep your eyes on the sky to the right of the tall cypress trees. I heard the booms (interceptions) but was trying to find where there were in real time. The tiny little white puffs that occur and linger in the sky just above the larger clouds are all missiles that have been taken out. Ironic that they were headed towards Nazareth and the Arab towns surrounding.

Later in the afternoon, the missiles got a little closer. Like the next mountain over. I actually didn’t realize the missiles would be directly overhead. By the time our city’s siren sounded, it was actually too late to take adequate cover, so I just ducked inside.

OK. So I figure that by the time I see my text with the alert and figure out if it’s aimed towards us, I have about 12-16 seconds to get down three flights of steps (we have a very tall house) and into the safe room. It takes me about 3 minutes, 2 1/2 best. From the time a siren alarms, I have about 3 seconds. This is just my own estimate and I’m pretty horrendous at math. Still. Thank goodness for angels. John got fairly done with me as I yelled for him to take shelter and promptly went outside to get video. He and our housemate have come up with a drinking game: a shot of whiskey every time you have to run into the mammad. (So glad it’s not that often) Luckily, the average safe room stay is 5-10 minutes until the all-clear sounds. We’ve not had to use it very often.

Last night, we had to go out to walk the dog. As usual, there are so many people here that go out for an evening walk. It’s cooler. People are home from work. Dogs have to be walked as well as humans. So I’m out there looking at the ‘fireworks’ that are now going off in the direction of Haifa Bay. Waiting for the booms to arrive, looking up and outwards at the gorgeous view. Not paying attention, when WHAM! I step into a deep enough little pothole in the sidewalk. OUCH!!! My leg, knee, hip and back. OUCH!! So today I’ve been de-commissioned. Flat on my back again. I can tell my grandkids I was injured in the war. How special. I shall have to completely take it easy for the next few days. It’s that painful again. It will teach me to pay attention.

Once again, we woke up fairly early to our now-regular alarm clock. I counted 19 booms. My texts say they were relatively close, but not an immediate threat to us. Unfortunately, I was not able to run outside at this time. Then an hour later, another salvo came booming in.

I am so thankful to the IDF, the IAF, Iron Dome, David’s sling, protecting angels, the hand of G-d that keeps us safe. So far in all of this there have been no Israelis killed. 16 casualties, most of those from tripping while running to a shelter (hello, clumsy, my old friend…). I’m not counted as one because I did not seek treatment. Two from shrapnel.

It’s almost two in the afternoon. We’ve heard the planes and booms from Lebanon. The thunderous crashes from missiles nearby and faraway thuds from those farther away as they are intercepted or as they land in fields and open spaces. We are fine. Really. It’s amazing how normal this has all become. Schools have been closed. All extra and outdoor activities are down. We are as prepared as can be.

We continue to pray that this is a quick and successful operation at eradicating terror cells in our part of the world. We pray the hostages still in captivity in Gaza are miraculously freed and led to safety. We pray for all innocents caught in the line of fire. For the protection of our troops and for the US to butt out. We’ve got this. Back off with your ever so helpful interference. We pray for peace. (Oh, and the healing of my body)

If you have 6 minutes, this is an excellent explanation of all our news- highly recommend watching

Wake Up! Who Needs More Excitement? War Stories. 22 September, 2024

Shabbat started out fairly peacefully, but we knew something major was brewing. Three of our neighbors were suddenly called up to reserves, two of them are paramedics. The Israeli Defense Minister signed an emergency directive that was broadcast on all media and social media:

There are new Home Front restrictions for all civilians in Haifa and northward. All kindergarten and elementary schools open on Sunday only if nearby shelters can be accessed in time allowed for that area. Middle and high schools closed. No after school activities or sports. No outdoor gatherings over 30 people. Stay close to shelter at all times.

For the past 11 months Hizbulla has launched over 8300 rockets and exploding suicide drones into Israel. Over 70,000 residents from the northern border communities have been displaced since 8 October. Many of these little villages that butt up against Lebanon have been totally destroyed. There is really nothing left intact. It’s a game of psychological warfare for the terrorists. We have endured constant barrages on a daily basis. Most have been shot down by Iron Dome, but there has also been much damage to forests, fields, farms, and property. Thank goodness, the casualties have been less than 100 so far, but just one innocent civilian killed (12 Druze children in Madj Al Shams last month) is a precious loss for us.

Last week, Israel launched its own version of psychological warfare on Hizbulla. On Wednesday, precisely timed detonation of all the pagers used by the upper level terrorists went off, killing 14 and wounding thousands of Hizbulla fighters. The next day the Iran proxy, IRGC, and Hizbulla command resorted to using walkie -talkies, which all blew up simultaneously across Lebanon. And Friday, the Israeli Air Force made a surgical strike in Beirut on the building in which remaining Hizbulla and Iran were meeting. This sends the message- we know who you are and where you are. You cannot hide. We will be coming for you unless you cease fire.

As a result of these surgical IDF strikes, several of the top eschelon of the elite Radwan command unit were killed. This included Ibrahim Aqil, head of Hizbulla’s military operations, two senior commanders and 14 other members. For your information, Aqil had been on the top 3 wanted terrorists list in the United States. He was the one responsible for the 1983 attack on the US military base in Beirut during the Reagan administration. The attack killed 243 US soldiers. There was a $7million bounty on his head. (Israelis are joking that we just saved the US taxpayers $7million. Thank you very much). The White House and Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed concern that they were not forewarned.

While Hamas, Hizbulla, PIJ, etc have tried to target the civilian population in both their psy-ops and their warfare, Israel has only targeted known terrorists. Last weeks’ telecommunications ’malfunctions’ was only intended to hurt the members of the terror organizations. It showed them that they are not safe. That Israeli intelligence knows who they are is watching.

In Arab culture, this was a mark of severe shame upon them. It was pure humiliation as they watched the memes and the jokes roll out that made fun of their exploding devices. In Arab culture, to shame someone is the worst possible affront. So they were flaming hot mad and their leader, Nasrallah, vowed to take revenge.

Israel is back on highest alert.

Last night (Motzash/Motzey Shabbat/ the ending of the Sabbath at night) just after sunset we began to hear the loud booming explosions in the distant north. It lasted for a few minutes, then we heard the expected IDF jets roaring through the air. One huuuuuge boom. The sky over the mountain ridge had a faint pink glow towards Lebanon. There was an Israeli air strike on a large weapons warehouse used by Hizbulla. It was quiet for some hours after that.

Then, just before midnight we heard the booming thuds again, this time coming from the mountains just south of us. I looked at the red alerts on my phone: Kfar Manda, Nazareth, Tsippori, Cana, Shimshit, Beit Shean – all deep into the Jezreel Valley. They were aiming for military logistics bases and warehouses nearby and a large defense company (Research and Development much like Teledyne) on the mountain across from us. There were two direct hits in Nazareth, one that exploded in an empty lot and one that came straight down, but did not explode.

The videos that came to us over the news shortly afterwards included one of a group of Arab men in Nazareth taking selfies and posing for photos with themselves wrapped around and hugging the yet unexploded missile. (We are repeatedly warned to not go near, but to report any pieces of rockets or missiles we come across. They can go off at any time-). Just brilliant, Guys. I’m sure your friends will all be impressed.

John and I said our night prayers and went to bed. We had an early day on Sunday and I set my alarm for 06:15. The alarm came and I dozed back off. I’m sleeping fully dressed in yoga pants and a shirt (not PJs) because we have a gentleman living with us. I refuse to go into a saferoom in a nightie. Exactly 06:27 BOOM!!! BOOM!!!!! BOOM!!!! Wake up!!! The whole house is shaking. Glad I took down all the photos, paintings and breakables. These sounded super close. And they weren’t letting up. I also sleep with the window partially open to hear a siren if there is one. No siren. Very strange. More booms like the loudest thunder.

From the neighboring villages all around, all the way towards Haifa Bay, but not from our city, I heard the constant wail of the siren. My phone started beeping the red alerts and the booming continued, one after another. So, what was I supposed to do? No sirens here in our neighborhood.

I grabbed my phone, opened the metal shutters covering our patio door, and rushed outside. I had to get all of this on film for you to experience. It seemed Haifa and suburbs took direct hits. There were puffs of smoke from the Iron Dome interceptions all over the sky to the west between Akko and Haifa. 17,18,19, 20 and counting. I didn’t even think to look directly overhead or towards the mountain across from us. But there, too. Scores of missiles being taken out. We later found out there were 87 in all.

Good Mornin’, Vietnam!

John straggled out behind me. It is customary to recite Psalm 27 every morning and evening during the Hebrew month of Elul. Hmmmmm….. it’s come in very timely. I think we’ve memorized it by now. Anyway, John is out on the patio on our rooftop reciting the Psalm:

The L-rd is my light and salvation; whom should I fear? The L-rd is my refuge; of whom should I be afraid? When evildoers come at me to devour my flesh, These enemies and foes themselves stumble and fall. Though an army encamp against me, my heart does not fear. Though war be waged against me even then do I trust….

And then, as suddenly as it started, all was quiet. Except for a few alarms going off, things seemed normal – except for the two plumes of smoke rising in the direction of Haifa (you can see it in the first video if you look hard in the distance right and then center at the base of Mt. Carmel…). I started checking all my news feeds. Within a half hour, we got photos of a bullseye on a home in Kiryat Bialik (Haifa suburb) and in Moreshit (Moor-AY-sheet). All residents in their safe rooms. Only three people with very minor injuries due to shrapnel. A barn holding several cows in Beit Shean was hit, the meat is now Hallal and will be on the menu for dinner we presume (dark humor, but this is how we cope).

So what to do? Should we stay home? We had some appointments in Tiberias, some friends to see, and I really needed to shop at my favorite little kibbutz store in Deganya. We are flying back to the States next week and I needed to pick up several gifts… olive oil, dates, techineh, halvah, rose water, Dead Sea products. The coast seemed pretty clear, and there were no missiles for 40 minutes. We weren’t going to let them change our lives (then they win).

So we attended to our business; had a lovely brunch with friends; went shopping; then stopped at the fish market to buy some fish (I have no idea what Levrak is, but it’s delicious): it was pulled out of the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) just this morning. The entire time IAF jets strafed the skies above. If there was a siren, we would deal with it then. But that was the typical pattern. Rain down about a hundred bombs and run away.

OMG…the Red Flag of Revenge! Is that like the Black Spot in Treasure Island?Hizbulla is vowing to get even. Again.

Rambam Hospital in Haifa has moved its quarters into the underground parking lots. Everything has been thoroughly sterilized. All non-essential services and appointments have been canceled. They are now ready for and expecting the most severe of circumstances. The once-parking lot is now fully equipped with beds, seven complete surgical theatres, dialysis equipment, oxygen lines, emergency equipment, power generators. Hopefully it will not be needed. My husband has a small procedure scheduled for mid-October. Hopefully it will not be pushed further back as it was made eight months ago.

We got back home this afternoon just in time for the prime minister’s speech, issuing a stern warning to Hizbulla. “No country can accept the wanton rocketing of its cities. We can’t accept it either. We will take whatever action is necessary to restore security and bring our people safely back to their homes.”

Please join me in prayer for both Israel and any innocent Lebanese civilians caught up in this whole mess. It’s a matter of pride and ego for the terrorists. They will not give in until Israel is free of Jews (Christians, Druze). They cannot lose face. They are already being humiliated on the world’s stage. They would rather die as shahid, or martyr. We hope and pray for peace. Please, let there be quiet and safe days ahead. We really don’t need all this excitement.
